Galaxy Note 8 Maintains 720p 240fps!

As predicted the newly announced Samsung Galaxy Note 8 will not improve on the Note 7 or Galaxy S8 phones when it comes to slow motion capabilities. It maxes out at 1080p 60fps and only allows 720p 240fps for slow motion. Missing is the 120fps 1080p modes of competitive flagship phones like the iPhone 7 or Google Pixel.

The Phone has delivered in most other fronts however with probably the best screen yet on a phablet phone at 6.3″ Quad HD+ Super AMOLED (2960 x 1440) 521 ppi resolution. There is also an extra attention put on the battery safety which according to Samsung is not only safe but amply tested to rigorous conditions. Huawei Mate 10 Hints Slow Motion Feature?

Huawei Mate 10 Hints Slow Motion

In a recent video release of what is rumored to be the Huawei Mate 10 phone, we noticed several clips cut in the teaser shot in slow motion with good quality. If these are shot with the new Leica branded dual camera module from Huawei; it may be the slow motion phone to show Sony competition this year.

The cameras on the rear side of the phone hint at a 12MP color module and a 20MP monochrome detail module.  The 12MP sensor will probably be used for the slow motion recording if it pans out. Sony Xperia XZ1 Rumors Say 960fps Feature!

The Sony Xperia XZ1 Rumors about a 5.2″ HDR screen phone in the XZ line include the Motion Eye feature of 960fps video capture.  The Xperia XZs and XZ Premium earlier this year showed off Sony’s new slow motion capabilities when it comes to mobile sensor packages. The quality on those phones aims for 720p at 960fps and while it has some artifacts it is still usable.

We expect the Motion Eye Feature of the XZ1 to be the same as in other XZ phones which lasts under one second of recording at 720p 960fps. The Phone leaks also suggests the same sensor block which at 19MP is identical to previous XZ releases with Motion Eye.  The Phone will also have 4k 30p and 60fps 1080p recording.   → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Galaxy Note 8 Teaser Video Released!

The Galaxy Note 8 by Samsung is having a lot of interest pull these days. However, all of the camera improvement info leaks point to the same Slow Motion performance as the regular S8 which means it will have 240fps 720p but only up to 60p 1080p recording.  4k capped at 30fps as well. OnePlus 5 Slow Motion Video Samples

Now that the OnePlus 5 Phone has been shipping to customers for a few weeks it is time to re-visit the phone and the slow motion footage it can record. We were disappointed by the 120fps 720p limitation on the phone since most new flagship handsets aim at the 120fps 1080p and 240fps 720p spec as a competitive plateau.  Still, the OnePlus phones are very popular worldwide with the mix of great optics, lack of software bloatware and true performance unencumbered by ROMs that slow the phone down.

It is true that the phone slow motion will not win any prizes due to slight compression artifacts and aliasing that shows the sensor is skipping lines and applying a lower bitrate at the end.  Slow motion seems to be an afterthought in the OnePlus 5 while stills and 4k recording are solid. Two new handsets from Samsung should be released pretty soon. One is the overly leaked Galaxy S8 Active which will be an AT&T exclusive in the USA and the other is the long awaited Galaxy Note 8 which should be a clean slate for the company after the battery fire debacle last year which had the Note 7 removed from production.

The Galaxy S8 was kind of a let down in slow-motion specs with just the 720p 240fps as the really important metric. Absent was the 120fps 1080p mode of other competitive phones which is now becoming a must have for the video format.  The Note phones have always pushed the specs forward in Samsung phones and we were waiting for the Note 8 to increase frame rate specs. → Continue Reading Full Post ←
