Sony FS5 Firmware 4.0 Unlocks 120fps FHD!

Sony FS5 Firmware 4.0

As it was announced back in early April 2017 the Sony FS5 firmware 4 was just released for the camera. It is of note because it unlocks the ability on the camera to shoot 120fps at full HD 1080p continuously without time limit.  Of course, you will have to pay the extra $500 USD for the right to do so by unlocking a license code.

The firmware itself which is free for camera owners does give you some really good free goodies like HDR video shooting in Hybrid-Log gamma which should make highlight and shadow retention much better in this new profile.  As an extra as well you will now be able to use ISO 3200 for S-Log2 and S-Log 3 recording up from ISO 2000. Fake Slow Motion Is It Worth It?

There has been a lot of work put it developing software that can interpolate frames for video editing and compositing applications. Twixtor in the late 90’s was perhaps the first time the technology could make something worthwhile and really produce acceptable results in a computationally acceptable timeframe.

Today the most used algorithm is Adobe’s Optical Flow in Premiere or Time Warp in After Effects which use vector directional plus acceleration of pixel values to derive in between frame data to generate new frame information from the preceding frame as point A and the next frame as point B.  The results can do some wonders to really slow down things above the frame rate ceiling of the camera. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

There has been a lack of big camera announcements at NAB 2017, with more and more saturation and less camera replacement by TV studios and Filmmakers there is talk of good enough gear already purchased for 4k and 2k/1080p production.  The Alexa, RED, Sony F55 and Varicam LT cameras released in the last few years already exceeds most delivery methods in quality and completely obliterates the compressed cable delivery streams for hove TVs.

However manufacturers like Sony & Panasonic have released information about new firmware updates that will improve high frame rate recording on some of their cameras as free updates. Canon 5D Mark III Gets New Magic Lantern SlowMo!

The Magic Lantern Project has done impossible things before but it continues to amaze at the sheer unleashed power of Canon DSLRs. The 5D Mark III has been a darling of the team behind the ML Project due to it’s processing power and great image quality.  The Camera is now able to record 4k RAW video along with 1080p 45fps Full HD and up to 60p RAW @ 1920×800 pixels.

So a camera like this is able to extract 4k RAW video and higher frame rates in RAW from hardware that by today’s standards is slow and obsolete. Just goes to show you how restricted final products get to market even when their processing capabilities are much higher. All this started as an April’s Fools joke  which is customary for the team. Chronos 1.4c High Speed Camera Tested!

The YouTube channel TAOFLEDERMAUS has received a Beta version of the Chronos 1.4c  High speed camera and has done a walk-through of the main interface, boot up time and clip trimming. While the camera is still in pre launch software it is clear the ability to shoot and save clips is rock solid.  For such an early version before production it already has most of what you would expect.

The interface has a Linux based OS with a simplified interface layer to control the camera. It has a handy preset resolution menu as well as live clop marks showing you the video capture area as you make adjustments. → Continue Reading Full Post ←
