Chronos 1.4 Update 4 and Yi 4k+ Ships!

Chronos 1.4

The Chronos 1.4 camera is nearing the ship date with early bird units now scheduled to be shipped end of April or beginning of May.  The delay as stated in update #3 is due to some LCD parts not performing as indicated and the manufacturer taking longer than anticipated. All other components are ready for assembly.

As far as FCC & CE emissions approval, tests are still ongoing and look promising.  If nothing else changes early bird backers should start to get their Chronos 1.4 in 4 weeks time. For non early bird backers expect a similar delay time frame to your orders. Once the cameras start shipping the time delay should compress with assembly, testing and packaging being the only steps. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

5 Amazing Slow Motion Videos!

5 Amazing Slow Motion Videos

We have to share some amazingly cool slow motion videos we came across recently.  There is continuous production of quality high speed content as the democratization of slow motion cameras is happening. However there is so much content being produced that is sometimes easy to miss.

The videos below are using Phantom cameras or experimental cameras in the mid 20th century capable of 15 million frames/sec to capture the initial fireball of a nuclear detonation. That rapatronic camera used an array of separate camera modules to reach that speed. However the frames recorded only were fractions of a second → Continue Reading Full Post ←

GH5 Slow Motion New Quality Footage!

GH5 Slow Motion

The Panasonic GH5 has been the camera darling of early 2017 for video enthusiasts and the addition of 120fps, 150fps and 180fps full HD was one of the most awaited features for the camera. Earlier footage showed a decrease in image quality when using higher frame rates on the camera and the appearance of moire and aliasing was evident. It was still far better than what the GH4s 96fps mode was able to do.

Recent new footage has re-examined the slow motion VFR mode and while there is a drop in quality the 180fps mode is still usable for many applications due to it retaining a lot of detail compared to other cameras.  The image is loosing quite a lot of resolution in the vertical so it will not be true full HD when you compare with the up to 60fps mode. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Panasonic GH5 Released Specs Omit 120fps!

Panasonic GH5

The rumors were in this occasion mostly true and that is a great thing for the camera enthusiast.  The Successor to the still relevant Panasonic GH4 is nothing short of a powerhouse when it comes to video.  Photo enthusiasts should still find a good balance of features in the Panasonic GH5 but it is clear that Panasonic is very serious about the GH series going forward and has once again created a flagship camera that will become a cornerstone of compact video gear. Updated Article Here!

The body has barely changed and that is also good news, the GH3 and GH4 were almost identical and it is a true and proven form factor with the now indispensable rotating tilt shift screen. Many have tried other designs but the fact remains that this type of LCD with easy positioning is still over a decade in; the best balance for video shooting on a compact DSLR or Mirror-less camera. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Underwater Slow Motion with Sony RX100 IV!

Underwater Slow Motion Fantasea FRX100IV

Few have attempted filming slow motion underwater and the results are usually underwhelming due to the amount of light needed. The light kits alone can make the undersea wildlife exit in a fast way from apparent danger unless they lack eyes or photo sensors.  However with a little ingenuity and keeping frame rates slow but not overly so you can get very good looking footage under the ocean with what amounts to be an entry package.

Chase Darnell did a review for Dive Photo Guide where the Sony RX100 IV is used with the aid of a Fantasea FRX100 IV Underwater Housing. As a diver the review is geared for underwater shooting which is not common when it comes to slow motion.  He goes over the pros and cons of the kit and much more. → Continue Reading Full Post ←
