Chronos 1.4 Software Update 0.2

Chronos 1.4 Software

The Chronos 1.4 Camera is getting its first firmware update from 0.1 to 0.2 to add a few feature, correct a few bugs and some interface changes.  The update is recommended for all owners and it is very easy to install. Be sure to have a FAT32 formatted USB stick in order to perform the update as it needs the root directory for file discovery.

We applied the update on our camera and were pleasantly surprised that the actual software update did not need the camera to be turned off after. It seems that the Chronos team is making updates on the internal SD memory and not on a firmware chip which also means you cannot brick the camera by updating. Very cool feature!

Sony FS5 Firmware Improves High Speed Capture!

FS5Sony

NAB 2016 has turned out to be subdued in product announcements when it comes to cameras. Sure there are a few of not but nothing earth shattering for price conscious video enthusiasts.  The Sony FS5 is still a great camera and the new firmware to be released in May-June 2016 will give it more features and power.

The New firmware update v2.0 will be free but if you want the high frame rate capabilities you will need an external recorder and $600 USD or $500 Euros. Also you will need an external recorder to handle the RAW output.

Moto X Force will it do 240fps?

Droid2TurboMotoXForce

The Moto X Force is the international release version of what is known in the USA as the Droid Turbo 2 which lacks a good slow motion mode in itself. However there is a big rumor that the international version will have a 240fps 720p slow motion mode.

Sony FS5 Slow Motion Takes 2nd Spot!

FS5Sony

It’s been an impressive year for Sony camera releases when it comes to slow motion capabilities.  We saw a resurgence of real innovation in the space with the Sony RX10 II and the Sony RX100 IV which have amazing quality for the price even when the limitations are there when it comes to quality vs time recorded which when it comes to getting the utmost frame resolution the higher frame rates are limited to just 2 seconds.  The PXW-FS5 camera has Slow motion of 8 second bursts at full HD quality at 240fps and the same at reduced resolutions but higher frame rates.

One Plus 2 Released and Moto X low Slowmo!

OnePlus2

Today has been quite busy in portable device land with the release of the Moto X, Moto G and the One Plus 2 handsets. The hype and rumors regarding slow motion modes on these phones turned out to be way ahead of the norm and what we are left with is the same tired old specs of yesteryear when it comes to slow motion performance. 720p at 120fps seems to be the norm for an afterthought slow motion feature. Apple for example continues to up the ante with 240fps and possibly more in the upcoming iPhone 6s refresh. There is nothing wrong with these phones but if you want slow motion performance in your portable handset, the latest Moto and One Plus 2 are not what you would consider optimal. They however offer pretty good feature sets and great cameras for normal video applications and still capture.

One Plus 2 Camera specs:
  • 5.5 inch : 1080p Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels), 401 PPI Screen
  • Sensor: 13 Megapixel (1.3um)
  • Lenses: 6 lenses to avoid distortion and color aberration
  • OIS: Yes
  • Laser Focus: Yes
  • Flash: Dual-LED
  • Aperture: f/2.0
  • Front Camera: 5 Megapixel – Distortion free
  • Video: 4K resolution video, Slow Motion: 720p at 120fps

The One Plus 2 is a phone flagship design for less money than you would normally pay for such a  device. it has a modified Android OS “Cyanogenmod”  that is fast, free of bloatware and very good with battery life.  It has optical image stabilization, large pixels for a 13 megapixel sensor, fingerprint sensor and a great alert switch so you can deactivate alerts in a custom way when you are sleeping, in a movie theater or simply want to disconnect for a while.  It is a lot of phone for the price. Even the One Plus 1 is still used in benchmarks today as a competitive phone in the mid range.

GoPro Session Offers Tiny Slow Mo Solution!

GoProSessionHand

It seems that GoPro is not quite done with camera updates this year. They just released a very small variant of the Hero 4 hardware called the GoPro Hero 4 Session. Some jokes have already come out about the name like the next Re-Session Camera to own. However this is more of an evolutionary and reductionist product than any release GoPro has ever made before.

The Hero 4 Black is a powerhouse little camera with great frame rates for slow motion and 4k video at 30p. Some have criticized the codec in 4k mode as being too lossy and we agree to a point. What interest us however is not the 4k mode for now which is absent from the GoPro Hero 4 Session altogether but the lower res Full HD and HD slow motion high frame rate modes.
