Sony Xperia 1 III is Slow Motion Capable!

Sony has now released the third iteration of their Xperia 1 series which are the flagship phones from the company that really push the capabilities of the brand. Many point out that Sony smartphones are excellently made and perform admirably while also including the now coveted 3.5mm audio jack which has been removed at the behest of Apple iPhone influence in the vast majority of phones. We will say it once more, USB C audio adapters are terrible connections compared to 3.5mm jacks which offer the best possible audio transmission possibilities without compression and other trade-offs.

The new Sony Xperia 1 III continues the 120fps 4k HDR pedigree of the Xperia 1 II which is clearly a much-coveted feature for video enthusiasts. This time around the phone improves color, compression, and HDR fidelity to deliver an outstanding image when light allows it. Dain app GPU and why you should wait for 2021!

Probably no computer-related technology has received more attention on the PC side than GPUs.  NVidia launched the 3000 series of cards with aggressive pricing that completely obliterate the previous 2000 series GPUs for much less money. Things are great for PC gamers, machine learning coders, and 3D animators in 2020 with these levels of performance except for the fact that there is a complete scarcity of GPU cards in most lines including but not limited to the 2000 and 3000 series for a variety of reasons.

Dain app the machine learning frame rate interpolation software uses CUDA v5.0 as the minimum requirement or a GeForce GTX 750 as the minimum card to run it. But that does not mean it will be fast or be able to finish interpolating your high res footage. In fact, a 720p clip interpolated frame rate needs about 10-11GB of VRAM memory on the card as it runs the entirety of the calculation in video memory for predictive algorithms to work.

However, since the app runs on video memory or VRAM you need a card with a minimum of 4GB of it to have any sort of success at interpolating frames. Even then your card will have too little VRAM to do anything over VGA resolution. There is a workaround however by using the Split frames into sections feature which will render small pixel buckets of frames and re-align a merged final frame with all the parts when done. This allows you to literally render up to 4k footage at higher frame rates without getting higher video memory.

How to Create Slow Motion Videos with DAIN APP | AI Frame Interpolation by GreenBox:

This workaround is very slow and can take days for a few second 4k clip to render on a mid-range PC.  Your best bet is to get a faster GPU with tons of VRAM. In our view, a minimum of 10GB of VRAM or even better yet a minimum of 12GB is preferable to get the best performance.  In Dain app your card’s CUDA cores are the primary speed accelerator but without enough VRAM it becomes slow as molasses.

The good news is that new Nvidia GPUs have more and more VRAM than ever before.  The just-launched 3000 series toys with 24GB on the high end to 8GB on the low end 3060 Ti cards.  However, none of these cards are available at this time at their suggested retail prices. Scalpers literally bought the entire free supply of cards and are selling them on eBay and Amazon at ridiculously high prices approaching anywhere from 40% to 150% mark up. 

You would think that the 3060 Ti FE starting at $399 for an 8GB of VRAM card would be ideal for the Dain app, cheap, great performance, and close to the ideal 10GB of VRAM but there lies the problem.  8GB will force you to do segmented rendering for higher frame rates and that will limit your speed and video frame sizes. Your render time will increase exponentially with also some artifacts from conjoining segments showing up in some instances.

What to do?

If money is no object then we suggest you get a 3090 RTX card with 24GB of RAM. This will be the ideal card setup but we are talking at a hefty price increase as MSRP cards are nowhere to be found. Relying on scalpers will cost you dearly.  You could still get a 3080 with 10GB of VRAM or a 3070, 3060 Ti with 8GB for about 40% more money.

There is a better option in our view and that is, wait for next year. Nvidia is going to ramp up production of 3000 series cards by Q1 2021 offering better lower-priced options of current cards and also a new 3060 card launching with less CUDA and Raytracing tensor cores but with a whopping 12GB of VRAM option.

By having 12GB of VRAM the 3060 card will be ideal for DAIN app on a budget and be able to render footage directly without segmenting the frames. You will get a big cut on CUDA cores on these cards compared to the 3060 TI.  Rumors say that the 4864 CUDA cores of the 3060 Ti will drop down to  3840 on the regular 3060 card. That is a cut of 1000 cores.  It will still have more CUDA cores than most of the 2000 series so it will still be a very capable card for sure.  For example, a 2080 standard card only features 2944 CUDA Cores.  You will really be able to get better technology for a smaller price tag for gaming, graphics, and machine learning applications like Dain app.

3. Get in the EVGA Queue!

The company EVGA has developed a product queue at https://www.evga.com/ that allows you to place your name on a waiting list and will email you the right to buy a card for 8 hours. If you do not buy it it will go to the next in line and you will have to re-register a new slot.

We feel this is great for two reasons, you get a great product at the MSRP price and you also refrain from supporting the scalping market.  The downside is that you may have to wait weeks to months for a slot to become available.

4. Wait for next year!

If you wait until 2021, Nvidia will have a January announcement event for RTX with the rumored RTX 3060 card which will be the renamed 3050 ti card.  There will be an option with 12GB of VRAM which will be the best in price performance and should be under $350 USD when it ships in quantity.

Final note: 

We feel you should only buy a card now at inflated prices if you absolutely need it for mission-critical work.  If you can wait please do so to combat price gouging and scalpers who destroy the legitimate market for technology parts.

We have rarely seen such a blatant attack to the consumer. The RTX cards have been gone in mere seconds from online sources due to bots that continuously scan for new stock and snatch it automatically.   By not buying from them you support the community at large and save money in the process.

You can read our article on Dain App and the interpolation of footage that lets you create very convincing super slow motion from almost any frame rate. However, the app shines even more with high-speed footage. You can literally create a 4000fps video from a 1000fps source that looks almost as good as the real thing. Of course you will create frames and data from the ether so for mission-critical and lab studies, Dain app will not be an option.

Canon C70 Slow Motion is finally pushing the envelope!

We consider the Canon C70 as the real successor to the 5D Mark II which started the ILC  DSLR revolution.  It ticks almost all the boxes for a vast array of users and does so on a somewhat realistic price point. We get a Cinema caliber sensor in S35 format at 4k Cinema and UHD that is capable of producing 16 real stops of dynamic range. The camera actually is using simultaneous dual gain technology to merge the exposure from both settings into an amazingly beautiful progression between light and dark.

The Canon C70 Slow Motion Mode has real 120fps 4k with HDR and full Canon dual pixel AF technology and even can crop to Super 16mm to record 180fps at 1080p and 2k resolution to provide you with that extra oomph which was sorely needed in Canon land. The camera does have some drawbacks but it is so good out of the box that we may have an avalanche of switchers to the format from Sony, Nikon, and Panasonic.

As you can see the camera is a powerhouse for a vast majority of users. Studios can use it without problem for paid projects as an A or B cam for a C300 Mark III for example or just build an army of C70s to cover events from many angles. The camera performs great in low light with ISO 25600 being the first initial noise bump that may need Noise reduction software in post but below that, a 6400 ISO shoot should be extremely clean.

The image quality at 4k 60p and 120p is excellent, we see crisp detail and the codec options are plentiful enough to deliver a good to excellent image in those modes.

However, the 1080p and 2k with a Super 16mm crop loos soft and mushy.  Compression is not that bad but detail is sacrificed from what we have seen. We need to wait for more samples but the ones we have seen make us believe that it looks more like soft 720p upscaled than real 1:1 pixel capture.  4k is immune to this but not 2k and below.

Canon C70 Slow Motion Footage Samples:

We found some samples and we made sure to copy the time stamp so they should start playing at that point.  We find the quality in 2k to be passable but it is not very detailed which makes us think it is not really a 1080p or 2k signal but a soft upscaled one.

Sony has been relatively quiet about phones since the Xperia 1 II roll out. However, rumors have been heating up on the Xperia 5 II, which is a lower-cost alternative to the flagship phone but very nearly as capable without the best screen or construction but not skimming on features. The latest rumor mentions a spec sheet that makes it a 4k 120fps recording phone which may show that handsets still are seen as innovators when it comes to cameras since very few consumer devices in the camera world can record at that frame rate.

We were not very happy that Sony basically killed the super slow motion mode on the Xperia 1 II phone which kind of showed that Sony was putting stills and regular video at the forefront without making compromises in sensors that needed to shoot at higher frame rates. Sony chose to do cleaner regular frame rate video and stills that were better than any Sony phone before at the cost of not having a do it all sensor.  Slow motion from Sony was all but killed but the Xperia 5 II now makes us second guess that fate…

Rumors also state that the phone might launch with a $999 price tag up from the Xperia 5 of 2019 at $799 now just $599.   The Xperia 1 II as a comparison shipped with a  price tag of  $1,199 which is enormous.

We certainly hope prices start going down soon after as with any phone, expect heavy discounts after the first 4 months of shipping units pass.  We wouldn’t be surprised to see the Xperia 5 II at $699 by the first quarter of 2021.

We really like that the 3.5mm headphone audio jack is making a comeback in this phone. Many many people still use wired headphones for quality and no battery hassle as those conscious of radiation from earbuds or the headaches they can cause many people. We rather see all phones keep this port or at least offer it as an option on a variant.

Sony event on September 17th:

There have been changes in the Facebook and Youtube pages from Sony regarding an Xperia event on September 17th which we believe like many others that will be the launch event for the Xperia 5 II handset.  You can see here the Youtube header changed!

Sony is no stranger to pro video and the latest a7s III camera can shoot 120fps at 4k as well, you can see the footage from it below which plays with the new format very well:

Believable slow motion video samples on Youtube for phones and cameras are so confusing nowadays that you simply cannot rely on them unless it comes from a reputable source.  The avalanche of fakes is so big that it makes it next to impossible to find the real ones out there.  It also makes it extremely hard to choose a slow motion capable phone when the supposed videos you are looking at are faked from other devices or even professional slow motion cameras.

There is also the big problem of stealing real quality slow motion footage from other channels and using it in compilations that claim to be from a phone or camera in order to get clicks and views for quick revenue.  The problem goes even deeper when these fakes overtake most other real videos due to the viral nature of their compilations as they usually look much better than anything these cheap devices they claim to represent can do.   We examine a few cases that can educate you on how to spot these fakes!

Slow Motion Phones Sample fakes:

The Xiaomi Mi 10 pro, for example, is a phone that boasts the following specs in frame rates:

960fps 720P/1080P
240fps 720P/1080P
120fps 720P/1080P

Xiaomi is not very forthcoming with the specs of the slow motion as it does not specify duration or method of capture. The samples below show us the problem of fakes head-on:

Galaxy S20 Slow Motion Samples Revisited!

Due to reader demand, we are posting new slow motion samples for the Galaxy S20 line.  We see just slight improvements over the Galaxy S10 in terms of detail and color but since the phones are the new flagship for the defacto Android international brand, there is a lot of weight in what it can do when it comes to the video mode.  There is no secret that Samsung has stagnated in slow motion since the Galaxy S8 and the S20 is an evolutionary step with better reproduction and more intelligent capture but not really groundbreaking.

There is no increase in frame rates above 960fps at 720p and the resolution is not even true 720p as it is jagged and stair-stepped in detailed shots. We kind of see it as a 480p mode upsized to 720p.  We do gain a 1 full second record time instead of 0.4sec on the S10 which is a big improvement even when the resolution is still kind of identical.  It would have been great if Samsung could have done a solid and created a true 960fps 1080p Full HD Mode.  We will have to wait for another crack at it on a future phone.

Galaxy S20 Slow Motion Samples Revisited!

Before you start looking at the samples it is important to revisit the S20 line slow motion specs. Below is the breakdown:
Super Slow-mo only supports HD resolution. On Galaxy S20 and S20+ 5G, users can record approximately 1 second of video captured at up to 960 fps with approximately 32 seconds of playback. On Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, users can record approximately 1 second of video captured at 480 fps and digitally enhance the video to 960 fps with approximately 32 seconds of playback. Playback time can be edited in Super Slow-mo player.

So to break it down:

  • Galaxy S20 5G – 960fps 720p with 1 second recording time.
  • Galaxy S20+ 5G – 960fps 720p with 1 second recording time.
  • Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G – 480fps 720p with 1 second recording time then it can be interpolated to 960fps 720p for 2x the frame rate.

The good news is we gain recording time from the earlier generation of 0.4 seconds to 1 full second or close to it “We will have to see when the phone ships”. That is a lot to like.  There is however no mention of the quality of the video and if it is improved with less pixelation and aliasing.

So if you want better slow motion the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G top of the line is not for you as the true real highest frame rate is 480fps. The other cheaper models make more sense here. Time for the samples now…
