The new Olympus OM-D E-M10 III release has for the first time introduced for the line some sort of slow motion feature. While not much it should be noted that Olympus has the best 5 axis image stabilization in-body system when it comes to jitter reduction and overall look.  Even while running or walking the camera does an admirable job.

The Panasonic GH5 has a similar system but Olympus still has the edge in performance by having much less shake with their patented solution. This is great for shooting video and this camera with 4k recording is probably one of the most stable handheld solutions for shooting UHD. OnePlus 5 Slow Motion Video Samples

Now that the OnePlus 5 Phone has been shipping to customers for a few weeks it is time to re-visit the phone and the slow motion footage it can record. We were disappointed by the 120fps 720p limitation on the phone since most new flagship handsets aim at the 120fps 1080p and 240fps 720p spec as a competitive plateau.  Still, the OnePlus phones are very popular worldwide with the mix of great optics, lack of software bloatware and true performance unencumbered by ROMs that slow the phone down.

It is true that the phone slow motion will not win any prizes due to slight compression artifacts and aliasing that shows the sensor is skipping lines and applying a lower bitrate at the end.  Slow motion seems to be an afterthought in the OnePlus 5 while stills and 4k recording are solid. Now that the Sony a9 has been shipping for a few weeks it is time to re-visit and look at the slow motion 1080p quality that the camera touted at release. It is clear that the camera is intended for the midrange crowd with it’s hard to swallow price tag but that does not mean you can’t think of it as a good video camera alternative.

It is also now more inclined to be used by video professionals because Sony has stated the a9 will have an S-Log update in the near future that will allow it to shoot on a flat video profile for LUT grading. One Plus 5 Debuts With Only 720p 120fps!

There were a lot of expectations for the phone that would replace the One Plus 3T which was a mighty seller for the performance hungry crowd without the high price tag that typically goes along with the best phones.  The new One Plus 5 is a good upgrade from the One Plus 3 and 3T in that the performance goes neck and neck with the best of the best out there and tied with the Samsung Galaxy S8 in benchmarks.

The tale, however, is not completely rosy as the camera module taking a page from the iPhone 7 Plus includes two camera sensor modules, one for wide-angle at 16MP and the other for telephoto with 20MP resolution.   We say it falls short because the slow motion frame rates are pegged to a 720p resolution and only at 120fps. Panasonic EVA1 has 2k 240fps Spec!

The Panasonic AU-EVA1 Super 35mm Cinema Camera is a first for the company in several key fronts. For starters, it is abandoning the Micro 4/3 sensor in turn for a more industry standard S35 module which has a larger area and in turn much better light gathering power.  Gone also is the micro 4/3 lens mount which Panasonic favors and in its place a Canon EF Electronic mount which could have been called blasphemy to see this in a product line of this price range for Panasonic.

Since the sensor-flange distance is increased you will not be able to use the Micro 4/3 or 4/3 lenses you were using with an AF100 for example.  When it comes to slow motion this camera is no slouch with 240fps continuous recording to SDXC II v90 cards in both 2k resolution and full HD 1080p. There was a lot of commotion online when the rumors of the Galaxy S8 having 1000 fps video surfaced. However that turned out to be pure unfounded speculation. Still the phone did offer slow motion of 240fps at 720p which is not bad for a phone but hardly flagship these days. Still that does not detract from the ability to capture cool slow-mo shots.

The quality is close to 720p on the Galaxy S8 but not entirely there. We see some softness, aliasing and moire in the shots with a tendency to be more apparent in diagonal lines and repeating detail textures.  Still the quality is on par with the iPhone 7 and Google Pixel XL phones.
