Chronos Production Update 6 Shows Assembly Process!

Chronos Production Update 6

The Chronos 1.4 camera is nearing completion stage and shipping for the earlybird Kickstarter buyer batch with an end of the month of May or beginning of June ship date.  The LCDs are in and the entire cameras are being fully assembled including the addition of emission shield tape which will make it comply with FCC and CE regulations. The cameras are machined aluminum on the body and depending on choice will be black or silver.

We are sharing the latest update which shows the cameras being assembled in stages. Final testing will need to be done in order to pass quality control before shipping, but it seems early parts tests were flawless. This Kickstarter project is ticking off all boxes and making a solid attempt at the market by continuing to sell the camera on their own official site here!

Olympus Tough TG-5 Digital Camera 120fps 1080p!

Olympus Tough TG-5

Olympus is announcing the TG-5 rugged camera which is the replacement for the popular TG-4. It has quite a number of new features and what may be a first for this type of cameras; a sensor pixel density reduction from 16MP to 12MP. A welcomed addition that will ensure better low light quality with a BSI CMOS sensor and speedier data acquisition which lets it output 4k and 120fps 1080p video.

It has also a 720p 240fps mode and a VGA 480fps mode which makes it stand out in the slow motion categories. This camera seems to be aiming at the GoPro Hero 5, Yi 4k+ and Sony Action Camera markets with more features, better usability and the features you expect from a portable camera. It can also be used in drones with some creative placement due to its low weight of 250g with battery!

Slow Motion News Update May!

Slow Motion News Update

There has been some news on the slow motion front that we would like to share. While nothing is a new product announcement for budget conscious consumers; there is good technology being released that shoots high frame rates very often.  We are expecting some new cameras before the end of this year that should push the technology envelope further while still being widely available.

Some slow motion camera projects are maturing like the Chronos 1.4 and the fps1000HD which seem unstoppable now.  While both of these cameras are 720p resolution; sensor technology has advanced leaps ahead of what was available just 3 years ago when it comes to fairly priced CMOS Global Shutter designs. We expect the first 1080p camera that shoots very high frame rates to be announced in the next two years as technology has finally caught up with budgets.

Jvc LS300 Firmware 4.0 Outputs 4k 60p!

Jvc LS300 Firmware 4.0

The JVC GY-LS300 camera had a firmware update last year that permitted the camera to shoot at 120fps full HD. Now the company is releasing a new update that adds the capability of recording of 4:2:2 (8-bit) 4K @ 24/25/30p video to internal storage. The camera previously only recorded at 4:2:0 color space.  Not only that, the camera now can output to the Ninja Inferno external recorder a 4k UHD stream at 50p or 60p for 4k slow motion goodness.

The Version 4.0 firmware upgrade is free of charge for all current GY-LS300 owners and will be available in late May.  This camera seems to continue to be supported by JVC due to its popularity and seems, for now, to be their best bet to offer a camera that competes with the Sony FS5 or Panasonic DVX 200 for example with a low price of around $2600 USD.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium Slow Motion Shooting!

Sony Xperia XZ Premium Slow Motion

We already stated that the Slow Motion performance of the Sony Xperia XZs & XZ premium should be identical given that they share the exact same camera module based on a stacked memory sensor design. However many readers have asked if there is a difference between both phones.  Considering the latest samples released we can state that when it comes to slow motion shooting the XZs & XZ premium are identical.

The camera has a slow motion mode that takes very short bursts about 0.2 sec each to generate slow motion video in a 720p H.264 video stream. It is limited and you need trial and error to succeed but in the end, you can get terrific looking high-speed video that simply is unmatched by any other smartphone to date.

Chronos 1.4 Passes FCC & CE Certification!

Chronos 1.4

The Chronos Kickstarter high-speed camera project is getting a big step closer to shipping units with the passing of the FCC & CE emissions certification. It means the camera is working under the guidelines for electromagnetic interference from the device. FCC will be the Federal Communications Commission in the USA and CE for the European Union EMC and Safety.

This is no small feat as many projects can get delayed severely by this testing.  On other notes from the update, the LCD touch panels for the camera are already ready to ship by the suppliers on May 2nd which means the cameras can be now fully assembled and shipped to early bird backers of the project and a little later to batch #2.
