iPhone 8 Slow Motion Samples Huge Improvement!

iPhone 8 Slow Motion Samples

Apple has really improved the slow-motion quality of the iPhone with the release of the 8, 8 plus and X phones. The 1080p 240fps mode is not only detailed but has very few aliasing artifacts that were the most prominent flaw of the 7 and 6 variants of the handset when shooting at high frame rates.

While the samples are few and far between, the increase in quality is very noticeable with the added benefit of better dynamic range across the board in highlights and shadows. While more tests are needed it is safe to say that at first glance the iPhone 8 and for that matter the iPhone X cameras are probably the best video smartphones released to date when it comes to slow motion video quality.   Well done Apple! → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Samsung 1000fps Sensor and GoPro Hero 6 240fps FHD!

Samsung 1000fps Sensor

A new Samsung Rumor estimates that Samsung has been working on a 1000fps capable sensor for years now but the latest aims to have it present on their next 2018 flagship phones. These will be able to compete with the Sony Stacked Mobile sensors present on the Xperia XZ Premium and XZs Phones.   The Korean Site ET News has the information on a 3 layer stacked sensor that will allow for 1000fps frame rates on the next generation imaging systems for the Samsung flagship smart-phone line.

If Samsung’s Galaxy S9 debuts with this new stacked sensor technology it will be a first for Samsung to get really serious about slow motion performance on mobile phones.  Apple, Google and Sony have been far above Samsung in Performance for many years and this will be a way for the Korean manufacturer to get the foot in the door and compete with Sony on their own turf. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Sony RX10 IV Improves HFR Resolution!

Sony RX10 IV

As expected Sony has released the RX10 IV super zoom camera.  It is a good update to last year’s RX10 III which had a maximum HFR recording rate in quality priority of 2 seconds. This new model is, in essence, the exact same Sensor and HFR spec combination as the excellent Sony RX100 V which was our camera pick for 2016 when it came to price/performance for high-speed recording.

The RX10 IV has, however, a brand new AF system with 315 AF phase points in total with also 25 region contrast AF areas for extra accuracy.   The camera is mostly identical to its predecessor in appearance with improvements and refinements like a better screen and improved weather sealing. However, the imaging system processing is the exact same upgrade we saw in the 2016 RX100 V. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

High Speed Video & Incorporating Sound!

High Speed Video Sound

Nick Moore the creator of the Youtube channel of the same name has done a primer video on the recording of audio along with high-speed video.  He goes into some detail about the usability aspects and limitations of recording audiothat is usable. Interestingly it can also mean you are better off faking the audio in post production for a better effect especially if you want it for a movie or tv show that demands quality audio.

The frequencies needed and data capture rate matter a lot in slow motion audio recording.  In the end, it is a balancing act of what can be heard by the human ear and what you can exploit on reasonable time frames. It is much easier for example to record audio up to 240fps but it becomes increasingly less usable the higher the frame rate goes. At 1000fps you probably will not have anything worth keeping. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

edgertronic SC2X Unveiled 1910fps at 1080p!

edgertronic SC2X

edgertronic has unleashed what could be the most important affordable slow motion camera release this decade.  The new SC2X aims to finally jump the 1080p barrier of over 1000fps that has been the wall of performance for cameras under $50k USD.  The camera goes overboard with 1910fps at 1920*1088 pixels which offers TV, film, and web video production a new realm of possibilities with native resolution frame rates.

The camera looks and works exactly the same as the previous SC2+ release but with a flange ring in yellow golden color. The camera will work with all existing edgertronic cases, accessories and support systems as it is a direct upgrade for the line and maintains dimensions. The camera continues the use of the Nikon F mount which allows for manual aperture and focus on the supported lenses which are plentiful. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Sony Xperia XZ1 Rumors Say 960fps Feature!

Sony Xperia XZ1

The Sony Xperia XZ1 Rumors about a 5.2″ HDR screen phone in the XZ line include the Motion Eye feature of 960fps video capture.  The Xperia XZs and XZ Premium earlier this year showed off Sony’s new slow motion capabilities when it comes to mobile sensor packages. The quality on those phones aims for 720p at 960fps and while it has some artifacts it is still usable.

We expect the Motion Eye Feature of the XZ1 to be the same as in other XZ phones which lasts under one second of recording at 720p 960fps. The Phone leaks also suggests the same sensor block which at 19MP is identical to previous XZ releases with Motion Eye.  The Phone will also have 4k 30p and 60fps 1080p recording.   → Continue Reading Full Post ←
