Gavin Free Educates & GH5 Ships!

Gavin Free the camera specialist behind the Slow Mo Guys YouTube channel has posted a recent video talking about the difficulties and technical aspects of light gathering for slow motion sequences. The video explains the shutter angle in detail and why it is important for the final look of a slow motion shot. He does so with the help of a Phantom Flex 4k Camera capable of 1000fps at full 4k Resolution.

On other things the 180fps Full HD capable Panasonic GH5 has tarted shipping and currently ships in 1-2 days after order. The camera is also capable of shooting at 4k 60fps continuously at 150Mbps. We have to share some amazingly cool slow motion videos we came across recently. There is continuous production of quality high speed content as the democratization of slow motion cameras is happening. However there is so much content being produced that is sometimes easy to miss.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium Slow Motion Samples!

The Sony Xperia XZ Premium and XZs have been exploding in popularity since the announcement was made at MWC 2017. The capability of the stacked sensor to record slow motion video at 960fps in HD 720p has opened possibilities only dreamed of a short year a go in the phone video space. Even the Galaxy S8 seems to be in the running with 1000fps video touted as a spec in the rumors.

The stacked sensor technology is the same one used in the Sony RX series cameras but this time attached to a smaller cellphone oriented sensor block which makes it possible to be combined with a powerful SoC solution to offer these high frame rates. Samsung Exynos 9 8895 Series 4k 120fps Capable!

The new Samsung Exynos 9 Series 8895 Chipset for smartphones has impressive new specs. It claims the most advanced 3D and general processing performance for use in flagship smartphones. What interests us a lot is the direct claim that the chip can handle both recording and playback of 4k video at 120fps.

The UHD 4k resolution is 3,840 by 2,160 pixels or 8,294,400 pixels rounded up to 8.3MP per frame. At 120fps this equates to 995 Megapixels /sec or near one Gigapixel. This translates exactly to 480fps at 1080p full HD resolution or 1080fps at 720p. URSA Mini Pro Offers Pro Features and 120fps!

Blackmagic Design has announced a new camera today. The URSA Mini Pro is a marriage of their higher end URSA camera with the still in the product line URSA Mini. It offers built in ND Filters, 15 stops of dynamic range “which is huge for filmmakers”, tons of ports, in body buttons and controls and easy interchangeable lens mounts.

For our slow motion fans there is not a whole lot offered by the camera but there are some built in features. 60fps in 4k DCI and also at 4.6k full sensor resolution is very useful and keeps the trend with the 4k over-crank frame rates debuted in 2016 on several cameras. The other is 120fps at 2k windowed resolution which is passable but not ideal.
