The RED Hydrogen One phone has a lot to live up to but contrary to many doubters it may be just that good when it comes to video and photo quality. How good? By some accounts, it may be unrivaled by any phone currently and possibly for the foreseeable future thanks to the special software that is running on that last year’s Snapdragon 835 chip which is now outdated but still usable to create what RED touts as an imaging phone for the connoisseur.
We expect 4k quality in better codecs than the competition, with the ability to surpass 4k 60p which is the current phone upper limit for frame rates and resolution. As far as higher frame rates go we simply cannot find a lot of information when it comes to the way video is captured but read along to see something that may get a little closer to unraveling the mystery. While you can clearly see this is in some way an article to attract an audience for their product, you can also learn about products you didn’t know existed as options. Our software of choice has always been Adobe After Effects with the Time Warp feature but we can understand why the subscription model for Adobe CC products can be a little too much to ask for many. The list here also shows completely free products like Avi Synth which is very powerful but not easy to use and other optical flow software that can really slow regular video and higher frame rates to a crawl. However, we consider interpolation fake slow motion as we noted in our article here! Nvidia’s new Machine Learning Algorithm is very impressive and shows the way forward for converting regular video to higher frame rates with surprisingly amazing results. Tell us what you think– HSC
The new Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe Lens with included LED lighting at the tip is a really interesting lens for high-speed shooters that would like an edge in their shooting style. The lens looks like a gun barrel but it is really a snake tube-cam-like lens that permits focus at just 2cm from the front element and also shoots at a fairly long distance from the subject.
The Kickstarter campaign project seen here was asking for just $9,999 USD in funding but as of right now with several days to go has reached an extremely impressive $811,113 USD which translates to about 650 lenses to be delivered to backers. Ever wondered how to use slow-motion footage effectively with Premiere Pro CC from Adobe’s Creative Cloud? This quick tutorial by YouTubers Becki and Chris will go through the basics of capturing, editing and organizing the footage for a consistent workflow. They used cameras like the GoPro Hero 5 Black, Sony a7s II, and the DJI Osmo to capture the footage.
Their techniques will apply to any camera that shots high frame rates like 60p and above. Maybe in a future tutorial, they are able to use higher frame rate footage from more capable cameras and even use the optical flow feature to really slow things down in post. Nikon has either gone crazy or has analyzed a market that is actually alive and well when it comes to all in one prosumer compact cameras. The P900 was a best seller for several years in the segment with an 83x optical zoom formula of 24-2000mm equivalent. Now the new P1000 increases that range by 1000mm to do a previously ludicrous spec of 24 wide-angle to 3,000mm telephoto range or 125x optical zoom.
The sensor is tiny at 1/2.3″ the same as small compact cameras and just slightly larger than the typical phone sensor of 1/3″. This is what makes it possible for the camera to create such a zoom range without the lens being larger than a Napoleonic war artillery cannon. The video modes are decent with 4k 30p but the high-speed modes are lackluster which is a shame considering this camera could be used effectively for extreme wildlife shots in super slow motion.→ Continue Reading Full Post ←
Oppo the phone company based in Dongguan, China has released their flagship phone the Oppo Find X. Comparisons will be made to the iPhone X nut just in name but also on shape and design. However, the Oppo has no notch but it also has a similar aesthetic to the Galaxy S9 from Samsung but with the impressive feature which slides a motorized top part with both the rear and front cameras. Design wise this phone might be the most impressive and elegant phone ever made up to this point.
The phone has no 4k 60p like others in its class but does have 240fps 1080p and 480fps 720p video. There is something akin to this phone and the OnePlus 6 in that they share the video specs. Are these phones similarly built or it is just a fluke? We tend to see a homogenized spec sheet on these handsets as technology is standardized in China within camera modules.
