Slow Motion Watch May 2018!

Slow Motion Watch May 2018

There have been some jaw-dropping slow-motion videos produced so far in  2018 and we want to showcase a small but excellent sample of them in Slow Motion Video Watch. Thank you to our readers for many of these submissions, we really appreciate your help in finding much of this footage as the sheer amount of quality material produced would make it much harder to select the good ones.

We have some incredible magnet work, weapons, military artillery, hockey, gymnastics and also the recent royal wedding in full display. It is also encouraging to see the widespread adoption of slow motion in phones as handsets like the Galaxy S9 & Xperia XZ2 start to inundate the video sites with user samples. It goes to show that good planning and a well-executed shot is possible even with time restrictions and limited hardware. Send us your samples or finds on our contact page! → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Chronos 1.4 Software V0.3 RC1 Released for Testing!

Chronos 1.4 Software V0.3 RC1

The Chronos 1.4c Team has been ramping up software releases with the latest v0.3 RC1 being dropped just a few hours ago.  Be aware that this is not mission critical stable software so only use on your own testing and not for recording once in a lifetime events.  The big fixes are in the color pipeline and how the camera handles pixel color especially red tones which were a little pinkish in previous software releases. It seems the entire color acquisition pipeline has received an overhaul. This should improve the color rendition on all objects plus the added benefit of less tweaking in post.

There are also several UI improvements like the ability to clear some warnings, move the button layout pane around the main interface screen and the ability to auto-save clips after shooting.   HSC will be testing the new software and report back when we get some new images.  We are preparing a color test to see before and after the software update and how much color has improved with the release. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Are Slow Motion Camera Days Numbered?

Slow Motion Camera Days Numbered

Recent advances in computation, simulation, and real-time rendering have become so advanced that some visual effects artists are opting for rendering everything with CGI instead of filming it outright.  In making-off featurettes, we have seen the VFX teams scrap explosions, fluids, car crashes and actor stunts with CGI inserts that offer precise control over lighting, debris, motion, and quality which are all a crap shoot when filming with a real camera.

NVIDIA just released some demos of real-time ray tracing that surpass the best quality renderers of the 1990s with playable frame rates and ambient occlusion that in the right hands could be indistinguishable from many special effects in a film. The new RTX technology in their Volta architecture GPUs can do area shadows, true multi-level depth reflections, refraction and global illumination in real time 30+fps on a personal computer. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Sony Xperia XZ2 Slow Motion Samples!

Sony Xperia XZ2 Slow Motion Samples

Sony made a headline splash with the Xperia XZ2 last week but samples of the slow motion or HDR were not widely available to really see what the phone could do.  Even today they are few and far between but we were able to find some to make a pretty good assessment of the quality offered in video mode.

We were quite impressed to find a resolution gain that it is quantifiable in 1080p 960fps Full HD mode slow motion that is greater than previously thought. It is still not true 1080p quality but it is slightly higher from 720p which in turn makes this XZ2 Phone the best 960fps phone out there for quality. The Galaxy S9 is close behind but with a severe aliasing increase by reducing the data captured. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Sony Xperia XZ2 1080p 960fps Spec!

Sony Xperia XZ2

The new Sony Xperia XZ2 from Sony is their flagship phone for early 2018. It has a lot going for it like 4k HDR movie mode which is a first for a phone and from what we can see it really makes a difference in dynamic range and color on the footage. It also has the latest Snapdragon 845 SoC for increased performance with the battery savings to boot.

What we are interested however is the slow motion high frame rate capabilities which after the Galaxy S9 with 960fps HD 720p announcement, Sony needed to respond accordingly.  Well, Sony has done so and they now claim 1080p 960fps slow-motion video on their XZ2 phone which is a one up on the Galaxy with more resolution.  However, it is not all that rosy as companies seem to equate a frame size with video quality which in many cases is not even close to spec. → Continue Reading Full Post ←
