Kinefinity the company behind the pretty capable and high-quality Terra cinema camera has announced in preparation for NAB 2018 the new MAVO 6k cinema camera in s35 and Large Format sensor options in the LF version. Along with the new body design and expansion options the camera will include ProRes 422HQ, ProRes 444 & ProRes 444XQ recording.
Kinefinity also has a RAW format “.KRW” and this has been updated to version 2.0 to support the new camera. This is akin to REDCODE RAW as the .KRW format can compress in RAW anywhere from 2:1 best quality lossless to 10:1 with more quality loss while maintaining the benefits of RAW like dynamic range, white balance, and higher bit-depth color. It also offers the possibility to record on cinema-DNG format In-Camera at 3:1, 5:1 and 7:1 compression. Panasonic announced two new cameras this week the ZS200 America / TZ200 Europe which offers the worlds longest wide to super zoom range in a 1″ sensor form factor with a 24-360mm equivalent F3.3-6.4 lens and the larger sensor 4/3ds 20MP “Same as GH5″ Lumix GX9 which tops out at 60fps 1080p which we will not cover any further. We have a cut off of 120fps for slow-motion cameras. The ZS200, however, looks to be Panasonic’s answer to the excellent and full-featured RX series of cameras like the RX10 IV and RX100 V.
The main selling point of this camera is the appeal of carrying a 15X zoom in your pocket along with a 1″ sensor which beats most superzoom cameras that use tiny 1/1.8″ or 1/2.5” sensors. Panasonic is able to do this by extending the lens to almost 3 times the camera’s width footprint including lens ring which looks kind of ridiculous but is effective at contracting enough to fit on a large pocket. The Galaxy S9 leaks are coming and we are glad to see super slow motion prominently displayed on the box spec list. However, there are no real specs when it comes to frame rates apart from a set of rumors we have received. The frame rate supposedly shipping with the S9 paired with the “Exynos 9 Series 9810” SoC will be capable of 120fps 4k and up to 960/1000fps 1080p video recording.
One problem, however, is that in the USA the phone will not ship with the Exynos 9 Series 9810 but the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 which may not support the slow motion frame rates. In other places in the world, however, the Exynos 9 Series 9810 will be on the phone. The Galaxy S8 is still fresh in the minds of people and while the flagship phone offers some very compelling design and performance, the now rumored Galaxy S9 which should be announced sometime in Q1 2018 “MWC Barcelona”, will offer a much faster processing pipeline for imaging, augmented reality and object recognition. All of these technologies increase the odds of higher framerates as a side-effect of the faster scanning modes needed for these features.
However, according to rumors, the Galaxy S9 is also going to use a new imaging sensor with built-in DRAM in the same package capable of 1000fps recording at some resolution. Will it be HD or Full HD? That remains to be seen but our money is more on the 720p spec as was demonstrated earlier this year in the Sony Xperia XZ series shooting 1000fps for the minute amount of time 0.27 seconds, proves that these types of specs on phones are still quite limited in recording time & resolution.→ Continue Reading Full Post ←
The HTC U11+ is a refined version of the U11 which was one of the better spec android phones of 2017. The new iteration boosts speed and a screen that goes from 5.5 inches to 6 inches. Space was accommodated for a larger screen without making the phone itself much bigger which is a feat of design and engineering.
For many, the big disappointment will be that it seems HTC is not making a US version of the U11 Plus and leaving it only for Asia and Europe at this time. The US market is very competitive and HTC has had a hard time penetrating the sales ranks of the Samsung, Apple and Google phones. The Google Pixel 2 and 2 XL have been unveiled and to put it simply the slow motion component has received no change. We are disappointed that the 120fps 1080p mode is the highest frame rate at that resolution when Apple’s iPhone 8 and X max out at 240fps 1080p. The 240fps spec on the Pixel 2 is the same also as the first Pixel phones at only 720p.
In 2016 we tied the iPhone 7 with the Google Pixel as equals in the slow motion game but it is clear that Google has dropped the ball with this release by not being particularly strong in the video side as Apple even has 4k 60fps added on their new phones when the Pixel 2 and 2 XL max out at 30fps. This year the iPhone 8 and X seems to be the slow motion phones of the year with a #2 spot for the Sony Xperia XZ series.→ Continue Reading Full Post ←
