Many of his answers are very detailed and offer a glimpse into his own efforts and how he sees the future evolving with the continual adoption of high speed capable devices.
Flicker is the “F” word of the slow motion video world. It can ruin shots or make them distracting enough to fail in conveying the message to the viewer. It is hard to detect while recording and even with tools to minimize it on set it can still show up later as faint throbbing light.
There are however a few solutions that can take care of the flicker of a vast majority of affected shots after the recording has been made. There is no do it all Swiss army knife for fixing flicker on a shot; no real 100% foolproof plugin or method to get rid of it exists. 2014 has been a very interesting year for slow motion. We saw a new crop of cameras sport frame rates that will set new standards for affordable slowmo for years to come. We had the edgertronic shipping in quantity and the Kickstarter fps1000 surprise that promises unrivaled slow motion in full HD and even 4k at unheard of prices. Phones like the iPhone 6 now sport 240fps and the Mediatek MT6595, MT6795 chips offer the possibility of 480fps at full 1080p.
2015 will probably be the year of the slow motion HD phone as it seems the feature is a way for brands to differentiate phone specs. Like the megapixel spec race, the slow-mo race is now in motion. We have finalized the analysis on the Sony a7s and the Panasonic FZ1000. We have placed the Sony in 4th place and the Pana in 5th place in our HSC Camera Guide. Even though the a7s is only 720p it has less aliasing than the FZ1000 at 120fps and the resolution seems very close. The Sony full frame also has noise characteristics that are much better than the 1″ sensor on the FZ1000.
All in all the Panasonic GH4 in 3rd place is still a better quality slow motion camera with conformed slow motion in camera to 24p and while a bit soft at 1080p it delivers about 14% better resolution than the a7s.→ Continue Reading Full Post ←
