Olympus is announcing the TG-5 rugged camera which is the replacement for the popular TG-4. It has quite a number of new features and what may be a first for this type of cameras; a sensor pixel density reduction from 16MP to 12MP. A welcomed addition that will ensure better low light quality with a BSI CMOS sensor and speedier data acquisition which lets it output 4k and 120fps 1080p video.

It has also a 720p 240fps mode and a VGA 480fps mode which makes it stand out in the slow motion categories. This camera seems to be aiming at the GoPro Hero 5, Yi 4k+ and Sony Action Camera markets with more features, better usability and the features you expect from a portable camera. It can also be used in drones with some creative placement due to its low weight of 250g with battery!

There has been extreme excitement over the last month for both the GoPro Karma Drone and the DJI Mavic Pro being the first truly portable and collapsible drones that offer professional features and a quality camera. However when we focus on the video quality it is clear that by several measures the Mavic Pro seems to be a step down compared to the DJI Phantom 4 and here lies the main issue between these two competing platforms.

GoPro has not been a quality champ ever since the DJI Phantom 3 came out. The Hero Camera with much more wide angle distortion and less sharpness was a letdown by being pretty much the same since the last refresh of the GoPro Hero 3+ several years ago. The GoPro way has been footprint reduction and feature addition instead of image quality hikes.

Sony RX100 V Manual Shows Higher HFR Resolution!

It seems the Sony RX100 V is not only improved in recording time but also on resolution.  Our reader “slowmosage” sent us his new findings on the official manual and in fact Sony states much higher resolution read out for the HFR mode at 480fps, 500fps, 960fps and 1000fps than the RX100 IV had.

The increases are not trivial and shows that the actual readout in the horizontal at 500fps and 480fps is the same number of pixels read out at the near full HD 240fps and 500fps 1824*1026. This is a big improvement compared to the previous HFR modes and confirms that the resolution seen in the sample footage not only looks better but it is based on more pixels read out.

Sony RX100 V Slow Motion Samples!

The Sony RX100 V has already started to reach reviewers and enthusiasts; the slow motion clips are starting to grace the web and there is a lot to like about the quality that the camera produces as well as the creativity behind the shots. There is a lot of power in this pocketable P&S camera and it sure makes for the perfect travel companion without all the bulk.

The quality seems slightly improved from last year’s RX100 IV but now with the added addition of a faster sensor and flash memory package with twice the depth buffer allows for some very usable recordings in HFR slow motion mode.

DJI Mavic Pro Drone Takes Aim At GoPro Karma!

DJI the maker of the Phantom drone has answered GoPro back with a direct competitor to the Karma drone announced last week. The new DJI Mavic Pro drone is extremely portable; even more so than the Karma and has obstacle avoidance technology along with ground awareness which is missing from the GoPro completely. It also has the follow me feature in more modes than ever which makes shooting with it a breeze.

All is not rosy for the DJI Mavic Pro however as you will need to use the included DJI camera with specs that when compared with the GoPro Hero 5 Black seem a little outdated.  Frame rates are much more limited but many drone enthusiasts feel that the flattened less distorted 4k image trumps the Hero 5 Black all the way.
