The Rio Olympics has been called many things so far but if you have been watching it closely it is probably the world event with the most slow motion cameras ever used. By some estimates there are about 1500 high frame rate capable cameras at the games anywhere from 120fps to 2,500fps. The quality is also astounding as full HD and even some 4k 120fps and Phantom 4k footage at 1,000fps has been shot.
In Part 1 of this review we looked at the body and design of the edgertronic SC2+ camera. Touched on the mount and available frame rates including a few new changes and some video samples. Part two is all about using and understanding the abilities and limitations of the camera as a high speed tool for science, film and or curiosity.
With the advent of 4,456fps the edgertronic SC2+ is no slouch when it comes to sample events too quick for the eye to see. In fact for many uses it is just too slow; as in the case for people shots, many sports and a majority of nature shooting. However with the camera being this powerful you still can dial it back to 2000fps or 1000fps if needed easily while capturing those events perfectly.
The Casio EX-FR200 is a weird camera in many respects. It’s 180 degree fish eye lens makes spherical imaging and the entire lens and sensor assembly detaches for remote operation. With the aid of a second lens and sensor module you can take 360 degree images and footage for a VR wrapper compatible with YouTube 360.
The camera modules can be bought separate and controlled from the main body unit without the need to buy two full pieces of kit. If you were trying to get into the Youtube 360 and VR video panoramic craze this is an easy way to do it. Last year we reviewed the edgertronic affordable high speed camera “Now named edgertronic SC1” . The first edgertronic was revolutionary in price and features and was a big disruptor in the slow motion camera space as many competitors that offered essentially the same performance, were left with price tags several orders of magnitude higher which many customers balked at .
This year Sanstreak the company founded by Mike Matter the mind behind the edgertronic SC1 is now launching the edgertronic SC2 and edgertronic SC2+ cameras which offer performance above and beyond what the original edgertronic camera was capable of. Software wise it is nearly identical with the evolving code base that has matured in the last two years is used with nearly 100% support in the SC2 and SC2+ cameras.
As expected the Galaxy Note 7 was announced this week and has the same camera specs as the most popular flagship phone from Samsung the Galaxy S7. It does have some new tricks up it’s sleeve aside from the customary S Pen. It has for the first time in a Samsung phone an Iris scanner for security unlocking and now USB Type C which many phones already sport.
It is basically a Galaxy S7 Edge with a larger screen, a pen and an Iris Scanner with IP68 Water resistance. We would not take it in the ocean but should withstand moderate immersion and or splashes. This may be the best Note phone yet but it is also the most uneventful in the line since most if it’s specs are already present in the S7 line. The Note phones used to be about the most forward looking specs, this time around Samsung stuck with the proven formula of the S7 which is the #1 Selling Android phone for 2016.
Slow motion is becoming more mainstream by the day with the advent of cheaper higher frame rate cameras, Youtube channels dedicated to the craft and now even video gaming getting in on the high frame rate action to capture slow motion moments without the use of a real camera and relying on real-time rendered graphics.
