Blackmagic Design may have just solved the problem of RAW video capture for any camera and every type of user. In essence, it gives the benefits of RAW capture while allowing flexibility in file size depending on production needs. It is a compressed format but by using a clever demosaic algorithm that happens in-camera, it shrinks the file size much more than other formats while preserving quality and RAW features like White Balance, ISO, exposure, NR, clarity and color bit depth.
For Slow motion cameras, it may be the codec of the future as it will allow the best quality without the enormous file sizes associated with image sequences like DNG or other RAW formats. Being open source and free of licenses it aims to be adopted by the entire industry faster than other formats and will be free of the platform-specific nature of codecs like Apple’s ProRes which only works on Mac OS X. We are constantly looking for high-speed camera bargains and one of the best places to find them is on eBay where used cameras go to find a new home. It is hard to judge the actual state of a product until you use it but that is why you can ask questions to the seller and reach a deal if needed. You also have to take into account that many cameras get used in dangerous situations to record events where no human can be close to like on a rocket launch pad or testing artillery.
Make sure if you purchase a camera to be given a determined time to test it and make sure it is working as described. It seems Fox Sports have gone all out this year to capture the World Series of Baseball in all it’s glory using a variety of cameras including 8 super slow motion dedicated devices. While the majority of the 41 cameras they will use will be 30 HD game cameras i.e. 1080p for live play, the rest is a mixture of diverse high frame rate options for replay and call analysis as are flying wire cameras.
It is unclear which models of camera they will be using but Phantoms by vision research are mentioned which are among the most used for their ability to review a shot immediately without encoding the data and the ability to save to hyper-fast flash media, along with 360fps and 960fps options which are probably from other manufacturers.→ Continue Reading Full Post ←
Registration has started at Edgerton Center from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for the yearly high speed imaging course geared at the principles of shooting and preparing slow motion setups. The course goes deep into the science and art of slow motion video and has access to some of the most capable high speed gear so that students can use and experiment with first hand experience.
Sometimes getting a slow motion camera that performs to the spec you need and at a quality you can’t compromise on; means you have to get a professional piece of gear that is used but fully working. In that market you will still not find extremely cheap cameras but it will surely cost much less than what the hardware cost’s retail if you can live with a few scuffs or missing cables.

The MIT Edgerton Centeris offering a new 4 day in depth course in high speed imaging at their Cambridge, MA Campus. The Edgerton center is as you guessed it the DOC Edgerton building named after the famous high speed imaging researcher and inventor. It is also the main inspiration for the edgertronic high speed camera. It could be a great way to get exposed to the latest gear from the top manufacturers of high speed cameras and learn techniques, lighting for hi speed and problem solving.
