URSA Mini Pro Offers Pro Features and 120fps!

URSA Mini Pro

Blackmagic Design has announced a new camera today.  The URSA Mini Pro is a marriage of their higher end URSA camera with the still in the product line URSA Mini.  It offers built in ND Filters, 15 stops of dynamic range “which is huge for filmmakers”, tons of ports, in body buttons and controls and easy interchangeable lens mounts.

For our slow motion fans there is not a whole lot offered by the camera but there are some built in features.  60fps in 4k DCI and also at 4.6k full sensor resolution is very useful and keeps the trend with the 4k over-crank frame rates debuted in 2016 on several cameras. The other is 120fps at 2k windowed resolution which is passable but not ideal. However the slow motion on these cameras is high quality and seldom does it have artifacts. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

WASP 100-C Kickstarter Light for Slowmo!

WASP 100-C Kickstarter Light

Hive lighting is just 8 days away from finishing their Kickstarter campaign for the WASP 100-C light. Their 35k USD goal was broken easily and now nearing $360k USD it seems they will have no trouble selling these lights like hotcakes.  However you can still get one of these lights which is ideal for slow motion recording because of their flicker free nature. High quality LED lights have no flicker due to their continuous power nature. Even at extreme frame rates of 20000+fps these lights should be able to stay flicker free for recording.

Hive does professional event and cinema lights and the WASP 100-C is no compromise on their quality. For $849 you can still get an early bird WASP 100-C single light kit which is effectively $200 USD off from the final retail price. That is if you back it before the campaign is due to close in 8 days. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

DJI Phantom 4 Pro Delivers 4k 60fps!

DJI Phantom 4 Pro

It seems DJI is doing the impossible these days to make the competition look bad. They are executing on all cylinders by releasing industry leading products every couple of months now. The latest DJI Phantom 4 Pro and DJI Inspire 2 are so advanced compared to the competition that it really starts to become a monopolistic playing field.

The DJI Mavic Pro is already the most impressive drone when it comes to portability and now the new drones fill the gaps in image quality and performance where the Mavic Pro simply can’t compete. GoPro has already recalled the GoPro Karma Drone due to loosing power while hovering without warning posing a risk down below. If these DJI drones are solid, then other makers have to step up their game fast. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Panasonic HC-X1 Packs Some Serious Performance!

Panasonic hc-x1

In a launch that was mostly subdued, a new camera was launched in August; the Panasonic  HC-X1 which is a mid range professional fixed lens ENG or EFP camera with some serious specs to go behind it.  For starters there is 4k at up to 60fps a format that we hope to see in upcoming ILCs like the GH4 successor and Sony Cameras.  The other is 100fps PAL or 120fps NTSC 1080p which is now a must have slow motion standard for any serious camera.

The qualities of the new Panasonic HC-X1 do not stop at higher frame rates; it features a fantastic 3 independent fly by wire ring system for focus, aperture and the last for zoom which starts at a very wide 24mm to 480mm at the long end or 20x optical. The camera also features  a built in ND Filter wheel from 1/4th to 1/64th for effortless 180 degree shooting outdoors. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

edgertronic SC2+ Review – Part 2

edgertroinic SC2 Review part 2

In Part 1 of this review we looked at the body and design of the edgertronic SC2+ camera. Touched on the mount and available frame rates including a few new changes and some video samples. Part two is all about using and understanding the abilities and limitations of the camera as a high speed tool for science, film and or curiosity.

With the advent of 4,456fps the edgertronic SC2+ is no slouch when it comes to sample events too quick for the eye to see. In fact for many uses it is just too slow; as in the case for people shots, many sports and a majority of nature shooting. However with the camera being this powerful you still can dial it back to 2000fps or 1000fps if needed easily while capturing those events perfectly. → Continue Reading Full Post ←
