Panasonic GH5 Updated New Specs

The Panasonic GH4 still is a very popular camera for enthusiasts, film makers and mirror-less fans.  It is one of the few high quality consumer priced cameras that shoot 4k still today two years after it’s introduction.  It is a tall order to improve on it sufficiently to warrant current owners to upgrade in droves and make long time Canon, Nikon or Sony owners witch to the Lumix Micro 4/3ds platform. There has been extreme excitement over the last month for both the GoPro Karma Drone and the DJI Mavic Pro being the first truly portable and collapsible drones that offer professional features and a quality camera. However when we focus on the video quality it is clear that by several measures the Mavic Pro seems to be a step down compared to the DJI Phantom 4 and here lies the main issue between these two competing platforms.

GoPro has not been a quality champ ever since the DJI Phantom 3 came out. The Hero Camera with much more wide angle distortion and less sharpness was a letdown by being pretty much the same since the last refresh of the GoPro Hero 3+ several years ago. GoPro Hero 5 Black and Karma Drone Lift Off!

There was probably no other camera out there with more expectations to raise the high frame rates threshold than the GoPro Hero 5 Black.  Disappointingly they stayed the same as what we had in the Hero 4 Black of last year.  However there is a lot to like in the new update and the Karma Drone might be the real upgrade for the camera line by using a handheld stabilizer that works in your hand and in the air within the same bundle.

The Hero 4 Black and Silver are still relevant and usable in the new Karma drone with no adjustments. It is good of GoPro to still support their camera line but it is hard to fathom why the GoPro 3 Black and 3+ are not supported since they basically are very close in shape and design to the Hero 4. The Casio EX-FR200 is a weird camera in many respects. It’s 180 degree fish eye lens makes spherical imaging and the entire lens and sensor assembly detaches for remote operation.  With the aid of a second lens and sensor module you can take 360 degree images and footage for a VR wrapper compatible with YouTube 360.

The camera modules can be bought separate and controlled from the main body unit without the need to buy two full pieces of kit.  If you were trying to get into the Youtube 360 and VR video panoramic craze this is an easy way to do it. Lenovo ZUK Z2 960fps Slow Motion Just Interpolation!

The slow motion phone that was gathering a lot of interest regarding it’s capability was the Lenovo Zuk Z2 Pro with a spec reported to be 960fps.  Such a spec would leapfrog the current iPhone 6s and Google’s Nexus 6P 240fps 720p spec. However it seems such bold claims are usually met with a reality that does not match such claims.

The Youtube channel C4ETech “Subscribe Here” has had a go with the Zuk Z2 and found that the spec is pretty much smoke and mirrors. The 960fps spec which was supposed to be HD quality and full frames is nothing more than 120fps 720p interpolated by software up to 960fps. Zuk Z2 960fps video resolution decoded!

The Zuk Z2 has been released and as it’s customary from many manufacturers they omit the slow motion or just mention it as an afterthought.  According to the press release it does support 960fps video recording but nothing else is mentioned.   There is a mention of the feature still not active in the pre release phone due to software lag which will be released at a later date.

That however has not deterred us from crunching some numbers and getting a good estimate from the Samsung 13MP ISOCELL sensor used  which gives us clues as to what to expect in terms of higher frame rate support.  lets dig in! → Continue Reading Full Post ←
