The Tesla500 Youtube Channel is at it again with an impressive build and experiment. David Kronstein the creator of the Chronos has attached a camera to a specially modified mower and blade assembly to shoot what a lawnmower does directly on the blade’s edge. The mower was only run at 1/2 speed, to avoid a camera failure, resulted in about 180 G-forces at the edge of the camera.
Needless to say, it really shows how good the camera is at withstanding abuse. While we do not condone you do this with any camera it is cool to know it can be done and still have beautiful high speed imagery to go with it. Congrats to David for the successful build! We are awaiting a 4k version of this camera in the future and the current fps4000 looks to be evolving to include a Sony Infolithium standard battery which also looks like a grip of sorts. You are able to rent it with a micro 4/3 mount or a Canon EF if needed. Some may point out that if its available for rent it should be ready to ship but these cameras are engineering non-mass production samples that are still evolving. We are expecting an fps4000 camera for our lab sometime in the 1st quarter of the year which will let us put it through its paces. The cameras aim to change the way you record slow-motion footage by allowing up to 2 minutes continuous recording in camera solid state memory which can free up DPs from the typical few seconds in slow motion cameras. The fps4000 camera hinted in Q4 of 2017 as the camera to replace the fps lineup is now entering its first production batch and it will fulfill the promises to backers that expected a camera either in 1080p or 4k. The fps4000 will reach up to 4k resolution at 500fps in it’s highest configuration. This is half the performance of the Phantom Flex 4k camera when it comes to frame-rate at that resolution.
The fps4000 also has a lower resolution configuration for 1080p at 2000fps. Back in 2017 on the announcement, there were configurations up to 4000fps at 720p using different sensors. The hardware main design seems to be shared among the cameras which makes it possible to offer different models at accommodative costs. As suspected in a previous article from HSC the Panasonic G9 bitrate for VFR or high frame rate mode is much lower than on the GH5. The Manual has been released for the G9 showing this lower spec. It is of note that the codec used on both cameras is very efficient which lends itself to good quality even at 20mbps. However, for those that want to prioritize fine detail and the utmost sharpness, the GH5 will, in the end, be the better option for slow motion.
There is also the upcoming announcement rumor of the GH5s Lumix camera now with leaked images here with 240fps at full HD using a completely new sensor which may be able to improve of the GH5 slow-motion quality which in our analysis was lacking when using 150fps and 180fps on the regular GH5. Aliasing and moire were evident in footage which is not present in the 120fps mode. Smarter Every Day has posted a very nice example video of audio master Gordon McGladdery recording audio to be incorporated into slow motion footage. Since recording real slow motion sound that is usable at super high speeds is an impossibility due to the undiscernable pitch that results from it, you need to get creative with some reverb, echo, pitch, and chamber audio effects in order to get a compelling final product. We are big fans of both their channels and make sure you check them out for supporting them.
