Upscaling high speed video to usable Full HD and or 4k!

Our of our readers Chinito Pinoy has shared a pretty remarkable video with us that we would like to share.  It is upscaling of sub HD resolution high-speed video at 240p, 480p and 960p from the Sony RX10 IV at 480 and 960fps and the A7S Mark III at 240fps from Sub HD to 4k UHD.

Sony RX100 VA Is Now Available Worldwide!

Sony RX100 VA

Sony has decided to release the RX100 VA worldwide and it effectively replaces the RX100 V production line. The new camera will have a better EVF refresh, modern Autofocus with improved tracking and a larger buffer of 233 images.  We considered the newly announced RX100 VI camera to be just a longer lens version of the RX100 V but with an increased price tag.  That camera does have a touchscreen and the reach but the fans of the faster f1.8-f2.8 lens of the RX100 V now can get a more up to date version.

We favor the RX100 VA to all other RX100 cameras as the $999 price tag is more in line with the segment. If you already own an RX100 V camera there is no reason to get a VA version as there will not be any improvement to the slow-motion component which is already one of the best out there.

Sony RX100 VA More Info:

The RX100 camera line now looks like this:

Out of the RX100 line, we believe the RX100 VA is the best value as you get the faster lens with improved electronics for the 315 AF points and larger stills buffer. For slow motion, you need better light and the faster lens allows that.  The RX100 VI long lens 24mm-200mm equivalent will be $200 more and only have the touchscreen as the separating factor.  The image quality and slow motion HFR modes should be identical. The cameras share the exact same sensor and software.

RX100 VA Sony’s Take:

“Tweaking an already stellar pocket-sized camera, the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-RX100 VA Digital Camera improves on the RX100 V by increasing the buffer size to 233 images, reducing display lag time in the electronic viewfinder, and adding several other upgrades. With the 20.1MP 1″ Exmor RS BSI CMOS sensor, the RX100 VA can output detailed images at up to ISO 12800.”

The comparison below shows that besides the long lens and touch screen, the RX100 VA is essentially the same camera and shares the same capabilities for photo and video.

Sony RX100 VA vs Sony RX100 VI Comparison Specs by DSLR VS:

So all in all the RX100 VA at $999 is the best value RX camera that Sony has ever made considering it’s performance.  Unless you find an RX100 V for under $600 we recommend the RX100 VA instead. You can find good bundled deals below at Amazon for these cameras. -HSC

Black Friday Slow Motion Deals 2017!

Black Friday Slow Motion Deals 2017!

It is that time of the year again when you get to use your savings to get that piece of gear you have been eyeing for a while. Discounted cameras and lenses start to inundate the web to make way for new upcoming releases next year.  We have distilled the slow motion capable gear that has a discount and listed it for easy access.

Be mindful that many cameras are being discounted for the sake of clearing inventory, which means that new models that may replace that line will come sometime soon usually after CES and NAB events.  If you still feel you can wait for new gear, by all means, do so but if you simply need a camera or lens right now and want a good deal, we try to make that task easier.

Black Friday Slow Motion Deals 2017:

1. The Chronos 1.4c Camera has been shipping for a few months and at $2,999.00 for the 8GB Memory Module option it is probably the best price/performance combo for real slow motion today.  You may need to pre-order for teh Jamuary 2018 build batch. First come first serve.

While the sensor is 2/3″ in size it is still good enough in good light to be 720p HD broadcast quality at 1,502 fps.  The Black Friday Deal for the Chronos includes free shipping, good until the end of Cyber Monday, November 27th. The code is BLACKFRIDAY17 at check out for Free Shipping.

2. The Panasonic GH4 with up to 96fps Full HD recording has seen an enormous price drop from a high of $1350 just last month to just under $900 USD.  This is a great deal for a very capable camera that shoots excellent quality 4k video at 100Mbps and 1080p up to 200mbps.  It will lack the high-end specs of the GH5 like 180fps Full HD but if you want a capable all-around camera for under $900 USD, this is a hard to pass up a bargain.

3. The Yi 4k+ which is a GoPro Hero 4 Black competitor with 4k 60ps is now discounted to $299.99 from an initial introductory price of $339.94  We, however, recommend that you get the GoPro Hero 6 Black instead even when it is $200 dollars more.  The quality and frame rate options are worth it in our opinion and will futureproof your purchase for a while longer.

amzn_assoc_asins = "B01CW4AZ4M,B01EIYLKRK,B074X5WPC5,B01ENJZYWC";

4. If you can live with what the Hero 5 can do then, for $349.00 now you can own the previous generation GoPro flagship camera.  It is not an incredible deal but it is still a GoPro with a built-in screen and 4k 30fps video.

5. The Sony NEX-FS700 has long been a favorite of slow-motion enthusiasts. And while it has been already matched in terms of performance by cameras in the Sony RX line when it comes to frame rates it is still an APS-C sized sensor with 240fps Near Full HD slow motion and up to 960fps at reduced resolution. All with the ability to use interchangeable lenses from Sony E Mount and with adapters a plethora of options like Nikon F and Canon EF lenses. This combination cannot be matched for the price of $3299.95 which is what it currently sells for. This camera used to be above $8k not to long ago. It is still a respectable camera with built-in ND filters and Sony Gamma curves.  4k recording, however, will have to be done with an external recorder.

6. One of our favorite cameras of last year was the Sony RX 100 V with its increased resolution in slow motion recording and double the recording time of the RX100 IV.  Amazon.com has the camera at now just $948 USD but with a $50 Amazon Gift card included which brings the price to $898.00 USD for the camera, and you get to buy $50 worth of accessories or a tripod for it.  We think it is a really good deal for this camera.

7. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium & XZs are capable of up to 1000fps slow-motion recording at 720p resolution. Their recording time is just under 0.3 seconds at that speed but you can still get a lot of usable slow motion shots with this phone and it’s motion eye technology.  When they first shipped their price reached up to $899 but now are heavily discounted. These are great Sony Phones and better yet at these crazy prices.  Seems if you wait long enough phones just become plenty enough on the shelves even in the same year they are released to become extremely cheap compared to comparable flagship devices of today.

8. Black Friday is probably the best time of the year to get a discounted price phone.  The iPhone 6 & 7 both offer up to 240fps slow motion at 720p and up to 120fps at 1080p for the 7.  Other phones offer similar specs. Amazon has a special refurbished phone selection for Black Friday with for example iPhone 6s Plus phones unlocked for $364 USD.  Many more deals to be had. TG 5 Feature Overview by Olympus:

1080p 120fps Slow Motion Quality:

As you can see from the frame crop above the slow motion quality is acceptable but not class leading. The camera looks more like good 720p at 120fps than full HD. For example, the new Sony a9 which has a very impressive and clear slow motion mode in 120fps 1080p that is really class leading; mops the floor with the Olympus TG-5.  But they are not in the same class with a 10x price difference.
High Speed Movie

  • 1920×1080 (FHD) / 120fps
  • 1280×720 (HD) / 240fps
  • 640×360 (SD) / 480fps

Since there are no samples yet of the 720p and sun VGA modes we cannot really make an assertion as to the quality of the images. However, the 1080p quality is not bad which bodes well for improved quality.  There are no samples of the slow motion released at this time besides the layered shots in the promo videos posted here.

BTW: You can read a comprehensive article on how to choose a diving camera here at: https://www.globosurfer.com/best-diving-cameras/

Quality:

The 20fps stills mode is pretty good and quality with RAW  shooting is better than the previous models. Olympus has been working to improve processing of images in this camera and it shows promise. Still, the small sensor and cramped pixels can only do so much in low light and reduced dynamic range even at 12MP which is very low for today’s pocketable cameras. We are glad to see Olympus steering away from the megapixel race here and offering better image quality than the 16+MP compacts it competes with.  It will still not compete well with Micro 4/3 or APS-C cameras. Even the Sony RX100 and RX10 cameras have an edge in quality with their 1″ sensors which are much larger than the 1/2.3″ inside the Olympus TG-5.

It is an all around good camera with some toughness and good underwater ability. The quality might not be class leading in any of its imaging modes but it does try to offer a well-balanced image quality in both stills and video. The 4k footage is good but lacks the dynamic range of cameras like the Sony RX100 series which is still the preferred value in portable cameras with a slow-motion component that is class leading. Those, however, lack the toughness and element shielding of the Olympus TG-5 which is its main selling point.

Homeward Bound with the Olympus Stylus Tough TG-5 by Adorama:

The excellent first look below by London Camera Exchange, will show you the capabilities of the camera in a rugged setting!

Olympus TG-5 – First Look by London Camera Exchange:

For $449 the Olympus Tough TG-5 is not a bad proposition for a well-rounded travel camera that will stand sand, water, drops and crush up to a point. It is geared for those that are as careless with their cameras as where they left their keychain.  With a “Microscope” Mode it may give some fun output of the unseen worlds but rest assured it is far from the magnification needed to see protozoa and or cells.  It will, however, do better than many macro modes and should do well with small insects.

The slow motion is good quality but not as sharp as the best 1080p 120fps modes out there. We still feel it should be given some consideration if you need a no-nonsense camera that can do a bit more than a GoPro or Competitive action camera.  We feel the abilities of usability, battery life and performance offer good value. It would have been better, however, to have a bit more slow motion punch on the lower modes but 480fps is a good solid start even when it is below VGA resolution. 720p 240fps is always a good feature to have to compete with the latest and greatest.  Sony could step up at any moment with a stacked sensor in a rugged camera and become the de-facto element proof choice among consumers with 1000fps like what they are doing in their RX and Xperia Phone lines.

We will have some more slow motion samples aside from the ones shown in the video sequences above when available from the camera when Olympus or users release them. -HSC

Panasonic Lumix ZS70 / TZ90 with 120fps HD!

Panasonic Lumix ZS70

Panasonic has released a new compact super zoom camera in the  Lumix DC-ZS70 (TZ90 outside of US & Canada). The camera is no slouch with a 20.3 MP new MOS Sensor with their Lumix Depth from Defocus or DFD AF technology; present in cameras like the GH5 & GX85. The camera also re-stocks the bundle with the compact lens that is able to offer 30X, 24-720mm in 35mm equivalent terms.

The camera also has 4k video at 30fps but excludes for some reason the 24p mode which film makers crave. Slow motion features are present but modest at 1080p 60fps and 720p 120fps which work across the entire 30x zoom range.  This camera is a powerful point & shoot option that won’t break the bank at $447.99 USD MSRP.

Panasonic Lumix TZ90 by Panasonic:

Looking at the video performance it’s easy to see the Panasonic TZ90 will not win any prizes with a 30x lens zoom range. The images look a bit dreamy and soft depending on the lens mm range. The 4k footage is detailed but not class leading with chromatic aberration apparent. It is also hindered by it’s smallish 1/2.3″ (6.17 x 4.55 mm) BSI sensor which at 20MP is a little cramped for light gathering. The dynamic range suffers greatly in harsh contrast conditions but there is no doubt the camera will match or exceed most smartphones.

The AF uses the Depth from Defocus algorithms that work most of the time but the continuous performance is not good for VLoging as faces will come in focus but hunt sporadically creating a completely blurred image at times.  The DFD technology works perfectly for still images but suffers in video as evidenced in the GH5 Autofocus tests that have created quite a bit of negative press for that camera.  Panasonic needs to fix these algorithms in video mode to be able to at least remain in focus with face detection.  Loosing focus while perfectly still on faces with little motion makes this technology a no go for the needs of VLogers worldwide.

The Slow Motion capability should be marginal and the zoom range will be good for far away subjects like birds and other wildlife. 120fps is hardly class leading as the Sony RX cameras offer better value for money “See our Best Slow Motion Cameras of 2016”  albeit with a more limited zoom range.

There is a small crop when shooting 4k compared to 1080p so you will for instance get 35mm in 4k when full HD will use the whole wide aspect at 30mm. You will have to keep that in mind.

Vlogging with the Panasonic Lumix TZ90 by Photogearnews:

We will try to get slow motion samples of the Lumix TZ90 / ZS70 camera when available but rest assured this is not a slow motion enthusiast’s tool.  You should look at Sony’s RX100 III & IV for a better overall camera. We expect the RX100 IV to be price competitive within $100 USD in less than a year’s time as new models are introduced. If you can afford a more pricey but increasingly future proof camera with amazing Slow Motion and continuous AF capabilities then we suggest you check out the RX100 V.

Black Friday Slow Motion Camera Deals!

Black Friday Slow Motion Camera

It’s that time of year when we examine the best deals out there for super slow motion capable cameras. Some discounts are hard to pass while others are downright ridiculous compared to retail prices when the gear was launched. If you are thinking to buy a gift for someone or yourself that does high frame rates then we have a few picks that will make it easier.

There is a plethora of options to choose from but we will focus on the best category contenders that have received a type of deal that does justice to either Black Friday or Cyber Monday! We will outright reject anything that just barely does higher frame rates and focus on cameras that do them well and have in some cases room for going head to head with very expensive ones.

Category 1- Point & Shoot Camera:

There is no real contest here besides the excellent Sony RX series. These are capable of near 1080p 240fps resolution slow motion and won’t break the bank.  The RX100 V for example is our top contender for slow motion camera of the year.

Category 4 – Action Cameras:

Action cameras keep getting more capable but in the case of the GoPro Hero 4 Black it is still up there and neck and neck with the new Hero 5 Black when it comes to image quality. It shares the same frame rates in 4k and slow motion with just minor improvements. But you can get it for $150 USD Cheaper than last year.

Hero 4 Black Deal: $347 with free shipping from Amazon.com!

Sony Action Camera FDRX3000 beats the GoPro with lens stabilization and offers the same exact video specs 120fps 1080p and 240fps 720p with somewhat less distortion and sharper overall look.  The Camera now starts at $348.00 USD Off from the $400 just a few months back.

Category 5 – Professional Cameras:

One of the best deals in slow motion capable cameras today comes in the shape of the Sony FS700 which is now just $3,912 USD with free shipping. The drop from $7,999 at launch is breath taking. The camera is capable of near 1080p resolution at 240fps in an APS-C Sensor and up to 1000fps at reduced resolutions.  A Sony RX10 or RX100 are better values today if you are looking for slow motion but you do not have the interchangeable lenses or larger sensor option to go with it.  We can’t wait for Sony to use the RX technology in a new pro camera that is affordable.

Another great deal in the pro arena is the edgertronic SC1 Camera which delivers up to 701fps at 720p resolution in a highly portable professional camera. While there is no holiday deal, it is still one of the only truly professional affordable slow motion cameras out there for 24/7 operation at $5,495 USD in Color or Monochrome!

Category 6 – Crowd Funded Cameras:

This space is reserved for Kickstarter and similar outlets of camera projects that offer slow motion options that might interest you if you so choose to play on that arena.

Disclaimer: The crowd funded cameras may or may not ship to you in time or at all depending on possible setbacks so this is reserved for the risk takers.  However if you want a great deal you must look at these options for sure and roll the dice. However both of these projects have been heavily funded and are progressing nicely with some final cameras already delivered in the case of the fps1000.

Deal 1: fps1000 HD Kickstarter project and Order Website here! 1000fps 720p for under $2,500 USD

Final Word:

There you have it, a bunch of great deals on cameras that shoot super slow motion. There will always be better cameras and cheaper camera deals in the future; but the time you have available to use them might fly away when we confront our own mortality. So plan accordingly and if you really want to experiment with the art and science of slow motion this is a great place to start!
