Slow Motion End Of Year Rumors & Predictions!

Slow Motion End Of Year Rumors & Predictions!

2017 was a very important year for affordable high-speed cameras. We had impressive performance across the board while prices kept mostly in the same brackets as 2016. You get increased recording time in the Sony RX series and incredible resolution on a 1080p camera at over 2000fps with the edgertronic SC2X.

We have some new rumors submitted that can shed some light on the releases for 2018 and beyond when it comes to high frame rate capable cameras. Rest assured that any and all rumors can change, be discredited in part or simply be completely false.  We have chosen only the ones that have a higher chance of being true. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

New Phantom Camera 1080p 20,000fps in 2018?

Vision Research the creator of the Phantom, has posted a new Christmas Ornament slow motion video that hints at a new camera release for January 2018. From the looks of it, it may be capable of 20,000fps at 1080p resolution. When you look at the footage sample the resolution does look very well but it may be 720p if you really nitpick the edges which look somewhat aliased when played back at 1080p.  Whichever the case may be 20k fps at HD resolution brings in an amazing performance and probably a high price alongside it.  Happy Holidays! -HSC

Panasonic EVA1 Ships Starts to Show Footage!

Panasonic EVA1

The Panasonic EVA1 camera has started to ship to pre-order owners and some footage has started to show on the web.  The camera seems to be very good at low ISOs and up to ISO 5000 it defends itself well. After that banding and heavy noise starts to become a problem.    One thing to keep in mind is that the 5.7k sensor is intended to supersample for 4k to deliver unbelievable detail levels while having a detrimental effect on super high ISO.   The dual native ISO settings of 800 on the low end and 2500 ISO on the high end help the camera achieve dependable noise free and extremely clean footage in those modes.

The camera can also shoot up to 240fps full HD and or 2k super slow motion video and use it’s improved sensor specs to reduce rolling shutter. The camera should be able to deliver excellent high frame rates in good light but it seems the slow-motion option offers lower quality in codec and also in noise control. We have no clue what is causing this but it is apparent from the samples that detail and quality take a hard hit in these modes. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Sony A7R III Shares a9 120fps Full HD Capability!

Sony A7R III

The newly announced Sony A7R Mark III is one impressive full-frame beast of a camera that aims for high-resolution enthusiasts who do not want to compromise on features, speed, and autofocus by having a superior pixel count sensor.   The 42 MP Camera shares the same pixel count and what seems the same sensor as the A7R II but it is improving on both image quality and features.

It makes a mature revision to the series with 10fps shooting at full resolution, slow motion now is 1080p  Full-HD 120fps in video mode compared to 720p HD before, AF is now a9 like with blazing fast performance with continuous tracking in video mode. Of note and what could be it’s most impressive new spec is an in Body Stabilization system claiming 5.5 f stops of shake correction. That is very impressive for an IBIS system. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Google Pixel 2 Slow Motion Stays The Same!

Google Pixel 2 Slow Motion

The Google Pixel 2 and 2 XL have been unveiled and to put it simply the slow motion component has received no change.  We are disappointed that the 120fps 1080p mode is the highest frame rate at that resolution when Apple’s iPhone 8 and X max out at 240fps 1080p.  The 240fps spec on the Pixel 2 is the same also as the first Pixel phones at only 720p.

In 2016 we tied the iPhone 7 with the Google Pixel as equals in the slow motion game but it is clear that Google has dropped the ball with this release by not being particularly strong in the video side as Apple even has 4k 60fps added on their new phones when the Pixel 2 and 2 XL max out at 30fps.  This year the iPhone 8 and X seems to be the slow motion phones of the year with a #2 spot for the Sony Xperia XZ series. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Sony RX10 IV & AX700 Slow Mo Samples Surface!

Sony RX10 IV & AX700 Slow Mo Samples

There is a lot of interest on the new Sony RX10 IV and new Sony FDR-AX700,  HXR-NX80 and PXW-Z90V Palm 4k Cam-Corders.   We have found a couple of new sample videos showing these cameras in action with HFR high frame rate modes. We estimate all four cameras to have comparable image quality in HFR mode but depending on the price a better overall codec with more detail retention.

However the best value out of all of them could be the AX700 which costs about the same as the RX10 IV but in a more professional body with lots of control that the SLR form factor lacks.  Also for a paid job you may be inclined to go with the more professional looking body to avoid judgmental stares. → Continue Reading Full Post ←
