Chronos 1.4 Passes FCC & CE Certification!

The Chronos Kickstarter high-speed camera project is getting a big step closer to shipping units with the passing of the FCC & CE emissions certification. It means the camera is working under the guidelines for electromagnetic interference from the device. FCC will be the Federal Communications Commission in the USA and CE for the European Union EMC and Safety.

This is no small feat as many projects can get delayed severely by this testing.  On other notes from the update, the LCD touch panels for the camera are already ready to ship by the suppliers on May 2nd which means the cameras can be now fully assembled and shipped to early bird backers of the project and a little later to batch #2. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Galaxy S8 Slow Motion Underwhelms!

It seems the entire internet was taken for a ride to rumorville with the supposed spec leak of 1000fps slow motion on the Galaxy S8. The final phone is not only not including the spec but it is still lower when it comes to higher frame rates than the iPhone 6s, 7, Google Pixel and Xperia XZs and XZ Premium. The phone maxes out at 720p 240fps which is so 2014 when it comes to high speed.

When it comes to 4k the rumors also touted 4k at 60fps, even some sites out there still list the phone as a UHD 60fps capable handset. We have to share some amazingly cool slow motion videos we came across recently.  There is continuous production of quality high speed content as the democratization of slow motion cameras is happening. However there is so much content being produced that is sometimes easy to miss.

The videos below are using Phantom cameras or experimental cameras in the mid 20th century capable of 15 million frames/sec to capture the initial fireball of a nuclear detonation. Galaxy S8 1000fps Rumor!

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is the most anticipated Android phone announcement of 2017.  The latest rumors suggest that the phone will feature fast DRAM attached to the camera module sensor package in a similar way to Sony’s Xperia XZ Premium announcement last month. This is the same technology that is present on the Sony RX Camera series.

It is unclear if this sensor will be the same one in those Sony phones since it probably uses similar technology. Also unknown are the final imaging specs when it comes to higher frame rates but we have some guesses. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Chronos 1.4 Production Update 3!

The Chronos 1.4 Kickstarter Project is advancing forward with FCC and CE approval which is crucial for shipment. Also the battery shipment issue seems to have been sorted out which could have halted delivery. Li-Ion batteries have special shipment requirements that make it hard for such electronics to travel by air for example or in tightly packed containers.  No details on the fix are specified.

There has been a setback however and that has to do with the LCD panels having a quality control issue. So the supplier will take 4 weeks extra to ship them. The Chronos 1.4 High speed camera is getting a sensor firmware upgrade or “Wavetable” that allows for up to 38,565 fps at 336×96 pixels in windowed mode.  This effectively allows the camera to go below the previous 640 pixel locked horizontal resolution  which allows for even faster capture speeds. → Continue Reading Full Post ←
