The edgertronic affordable high speed camera is such a product. It aims to democratize and produce quality high speed imaging affordable for the first time to a plethora of users and markets. Does it succeed? Does it herald the arrival of professional high speed imaging for the common man? Do I need this camera in my arsenal of gear? Kinefinity a relatively new company that specializes in digital cinema cameras is about to release to customers theKINEMAX 6kcapable camera. At first glance it looks like a RED Epic clone as the body and design aesthetics suggest however their technology is in house and their prices are much more accessible. The company is based in Beijing China and two of their cameras now offer high quality slow motion modes.
We are doing an in depth review of the affordableedgertronic digital high speed camerathat should be published soon, however one of the tests involved showing how the shutter curtain mechanism works on the Panasonic GH4 at different speeds. FLIR Systems the company that makes the very cool and portable phone and tablet thermal imaging camera attachment: The FLIR Oneis now adding a new product to their arsenal of thermal imaging infra red cameras. The FLIR X69SC is capable of near VGA resolution at up to 1000fps in full thermal analysis mode which is a very impressive spec for the technology.
Fastec Imaging known for very capable but very expensive high speed cameras for scientific and video production/cinema has announced a new camera based on the same TS3-TS4 Cine platform they initially released a few years back at NAB which has been extremely popular for rental and ownership.
The camera is called the Fastec TS5-H which is an upgrade from previous TS cameras as it delivers full HD performance with a newly developed sensor at speeds up to 634fps at 1080p. 720p on the other hand delivers 943fps which is very close to the 1000fps realm that is almost negligible. With 4k TVs, projectors and computer displays entering the marketplace in droves it is only a matter of time until 4k finds it’s way into the super slow motion realm for TV, Cinema and scientific analysis.
There is a strong argument for the increased resolution when it comes to capturing at 4k in any frame rate. It gives freedom to crop or punch in for a Full HD shot and or stabilize footage with crop leeway on the borders without trashing a shot. It is also crisp in a way that can only be described as looking through a window; which is a funny analogy because when Full HD came out in the early 2000s that was used often to sell TVs and the new experience. Now we are told the real window is 4k and your perfectly functional 1080p 240Hz tv is next to useless.
