iPhone X & 8 Have 240fps Full HD!

iPhone X 240fps Slow Motion

From earlier rumors, we were already privy to the information on the 240fps full HD from a code leak that showed it as an option on the new iOS beta.  There was also a secondary rumor that stated 480fps on HD 720p as a code snippet.  On the final phones, there seems to be no mention of this extra frame rate which possibly is being saved for a future mobile product by Apple.

The new Phones X (for ten) and 8 with the 8 Plus both have the same improved camera modules with the new A11 Bionic chip which brings new levels of performance to smartphones which also permits the processing of a larger frame buffer for full HD 1080p at 240fps and as an extra bonus for the first time in a Phone, 4k 60fps recording.

iPhone X 240fps Slow Motion:

As you can see the specs of the new camera modules are class leading with the Slow Motion modes having a boost by the added bandwidth needed for 4k 60fps capture.  We do not expect the 4k increased frame rate to be accompanied by a professional style bit rate codec of 100Mbps+  but rather a more subdued 60 Mbps like that present in some action cameras.

The fact that Apple has been relentless in the adoption of slow motion frame rates and has been class leading with full HD being their target for many years bodes well for pushing the spec forward for the competition to go ahead and catch up.  We expect the 4k 60fps and 240fps Full HD spec to show up on Android phones by the end of 2017 or early 2018 in several handsets.  What Android will have to do now is not only catch up but get to 480fps faster at full HD or at least in HD to really be class leading and compete favorably with the iPhone.

Of note is that in order to get the Slow Motion you really do not need to get the iPhone X at $1000 starting price and can use either the iPhone 8 or 8 Plus as they share the exact same camera specs and image processing pipeline.  This is great news as we will now have not one but three Apple handsets with 240fps Full HD and 60fps 4k recording.

iPhone X Impressions & Hands On! by Marques Brownlee:

All in all, we are very happy with the progress Apple has made and while there are no real world samples yet from the Slow Motion feature; the 4k 60fps is very good in the demo we saw at the keynote. Apple has never been bad at video recording with the iPhone and we expect that quality to further make way in the new handsets.

Pricing & Availability:

  • iPhone 8 Starting at $699  – 22nd September
  • iPhone 8 Plus Starting at $799 –  22nd September
  • iPhone X Starting at $999 – Pre Order  October 27th

iPhone x camera test | Portrait Lighting, 4k Video 60 FPS, Blur Effect etc. by TRENDING News:

We will have samples and our verdict on the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X when the video mode is put through its paces.   We expect it to be the phone to beat in Slow Motion for 2017 because the previous champ the Sony Xperia XZ and XZ Premium disappointed heavily with the 960fps mode by only recording under 1/2 second worth of video in 720p at a very reduced resolution and an image that left a lot to be desired.  Apple now with 240fps 1080p is bringing new levels of performance to the mobile space and competitors will have to react or succumb to the video prowess of Apple’s new flagship.

Comment below on what you think of these new phones when it comes to slow motion recording!

  1. I preordered my Iphone 8+ at 3:00 in the morning. I can’t wait to pair it up with the BeastGrip Pro and DOF adapter.
