Back in March 2008 a big splash in affordable Hi Speed arrived with the Casio EX-F1 Semi Pro camera. It promised to finally deliver the frame rates that were the realm of cameras in the tens of thousands of dollars but for the not to shabby price of $999 US.

Olympus SH-1 Shows up with Slow Mo Specs!
Besides the pretty exterior of a retro-feel classic camera trapped in a small sensor point & shoot, the SH-1 has a Slow Motion 120p 720 video mode built in that might be of good quality coupled with the new sensor 5 way stabilizer .
SH-1 Highlight Specs:
120p 1080 and 240p* Camcorders from Panasonic W850 – V750
The newest line of Panasonic camcorders announced at CES are a step forward in the codec department with up to 50mbps at 60p but the feature that caught our attention is that both the HC-W850 and HC-V750 can record 120 frames at 1080p plus interpolate to 240p by using pixel motion algorithms.
Main Specs:
Sony FDR-AX100 4k camera with a 120f 720p mode
The just released Sony FDR-AX100 Handycam is not just a 4k recording multipurpose camera but it also hides a 720p 120f mode which so far seems to be lower quality than regular 720p video cameras. The quality while usable is not ideal. The resolution seems to be well below the stated 720p in slow motion mode.
There is a sister model with the same sensor called the HDR-CX900 which shares all features “Including 720p 120F recording” except the 4k recording and of course a discounted price. However the $500 shave might be unwarranted considering the 1.5k investment for the CX900 which for $500 more you get 4k on the AX100.
Nikon 1 V3 120 frames 720p in an ILC!
Nikon’s new 1 v3 camera has some pretty impressive specs regarding hi-speed video.
- 120p at 1280*720 HD (Time duration not specified)
- 60p at 1920*1080 Full HD for 10min
- 768 x 288/400 fps (aspect ratio 8:3; plays at 30p/29.97 fps) */
- 416 x 144/1200 fps (aspect ratio 8:3; plays at 30p/29.97 fps) */
- MSRP $1,199 USD
*/ Hi Speed Cams doesn’t consider these resolutions to be usable for professional work. It might be good to have them for scientific purposes but not for video quality that can inter-cut with professionally shot material.
We still have no samples from the 120p mode but it might produce a very clean image since Nikon’s 60p mode is very good in recent cameras.
