Strobe Alley Birth of High Speed!

Strobe Alley

Doc Edgerton was the scientist behind the modern high speed camera and imaging techniques. His experiments made slow motion and the possibility of freezing incredibly fast phenomena a possibility.  The principles many decades later remain the same such as extreme amounts of light and ultra fast shutters along with a highly sensitive film or sensor for modern photo and video.

As a piece of history, Strobe Alley is a repository of technology and information from the early days of high speed and what it took to get us here. We found an old video that goes through the place with explanations about these aging strobes and gadgets. You can visit this place at MIT’s Edgerton center if you are ever there but you can also take a look through this footage. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Chronos 1.4 Shows Improved Case & User Footage!

Chronos 1.4

The Chronos 1.4 portable high speed camera from Krontech Canada and Kickstarter has been getting a make over in the case department with more mount screws and either black or silver aluminum finish as options. While the case is not finalized it is very close to the shipping version since there are a few non cosmetic revisions for the next and final iteration.

The inclusion of 1/4″ Tripod Screw mounting holes in the bottom “now stainless steel” and side and top aluminum threads make it very easy to adapt the camera to any imaginable position. There are also eight “8” M4  mount holes as well if you need them for a special attachment goal like a custom cage. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Slow Motion Videos Of The Week Jan 20th 2017!

Slow Motion Videos Of The Week

After the few camera announcements at CES that have a slow motion component there is little on the hardware side until CP+ Expo in Japan on Thursday, February 23 to Sunday, February 26, 2017.   Fuji Just announced a few cameras but the maximum frame rate on those is 60fps 1080p so we really have no interest in covering them at HSC. Our coverage starts at 720p 120fps and up.

However there is a lot of new slow motion footage on the web lately and we really have to marvel at the ingenuity, skill and risk taking to get it done.  We have a few footage samples from this week that we believe you should check out. Remember to visit and subscribe if you like the footage so the creators can keep pushing the envelope. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

HTC U Ultra & New Slow Motion Videos!

HTC U Ultra

We have five recent slow motion videos that may peak your interest plus a new HTC Phone released with a slow motion function.  While there has been a quiet front in the phone space slow motion since the introduction of the Google Pixel last year; we expect great things in 2017 like the announcement of the Galaxy S8 and iPhone 7s among others.

The HTC U Ultra is not a high performance phone when it comes to video recording but it does provide a slow motion function that is a little subdued due to the 720p 120fps limitation. The HTC U Ultra Phone  has no headphone Jack as will be the trend going forward since the iPhone 7 started making it more mainstream “though not the first”. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

OnePlus 3T Slow Motion Samples!

OnePlus 3T Slow Motion

The OnePlus 3T is a phone that is really a near clone of the OnePlus 3 but with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 / Quad-core Kyro CPU vs the Snapdragon 820 on the previous one. The main improvement is that the 821 chip is able to run at full speed without overheating the phone and force a throttle down.   Another improvement is a 3400mAh battery instead of 3000mAh on its older brother.

For slow motion however the camera should be the near the performance as camera improvements are “Intelligent Pixel Technology” which reduces noise in low light, New Saphire coated lens with slightly enhanced electronic image stabilization. The front selfie camera however offers 16MP on the 3T vs the 8MP of the  OnePlus 3 which should yield much more detail for these types of captures. → Continue Reading Full Post ←
