The Chinese cinema camera company Kinefinity is adding two new models of cameras at this Year’s NAB event in Las Vegas. The Kinefinity Terra 5k and 6k Models. They differ in sensor and abilities with prices that just 5 years ago would have commanded much higher tiers.
Last Year’s Kinemax 6k and 4k graced our Camera Guide with a good showing now occupying 10th and 14th place but now they are aiming much much higher with better RAW frame rates up to 225fps in 2k and lower price points than most of the RAW capable competitors in the space.→ Continue Reading Full Post ←
Resolution is one of the most important aspects of any camera image. In slow motion it could be the difference in showing important details or just obscure an event all-together. In machinery failures during manufacturing; low resolution and high resolution can mean the difference in spotting a crack or bend in the process and that is hugely important.
For film makers and videographers resolution weights a lot when deciding upon a slow motion camera solution. Not to long ago slow motion cameras at or under 1 megapixel 1024*1024 for example was a novelty and a luxury. Nowadays 1280*720px or the lower end of HD resolution is easy to find and widely used. Lytro started in the consumer space a few year’s back by enabling light field camera sensor technology in a portable package. Back then it allowed the user to select the focus point in the image to control depth of filed after the shot had been taken. This is emulated by Panasonic on the GX8 and GH4 with Post Focus but that is a feature that does some tricks with multiple images and lens focus points to select final depth of field.
Lytro does this by capturing all the rays of light entering the sensor at different angles and times to create a light field or three dimensional map of a real subject or scene. The consumer cameras sold in less than stellar numbers due in part to low resolution and while they tried with the Lytro Ilum to bring a more SLR like camera with 40 mega-rays or down-converted to 4 traditional megapixels. It also bombed as the post focus feature was not enough pull to get consumers to adopt the platform; along with claims of low dynamic range and artifacts in bright spots. The RED Scarlethas always had a stigma to it since inception. It was supposed to be a 3k camera for 3k USD back when it was planned. With a fixed lens and slow motion capabilities all while shooting REDCode RAW video. That camera never materialized and in turn the Red Scarlet with modularity was born. Not quite an Epic but also a lot more expensive than the original promise. It however delivered the image quality promised but not in the slow motion front. That is however until today with the Scarlet-W camera.
It has a 5K Full Frame (5120 x 2700) RED Dragon sensor with a 16.5 stops of dynamic range. That is some of the best DR numbers quoted for a motion digital camera. Lambert Instruments of the Netherlands has introduced a small and compact but powerful duo of high speed cameras with a monochrome sensor. The main difference in both models is that one – HS540S –is designed for streaming data continuously to a computer terminal for high end production lines and the other – HS540M – is for research settings that do not require full continuous recording by streaming monitoring. Flicker is the “F” word of the slow motion video world. It can ruin shots or make them distracting enough to fail in conveying the message to the viewer. It is hard to detect while recording and even with tools to minimize it on set it can still show up later as faint throbbing light.
There are however a few solutions that can take care of the flicker of a vast majority of affected shots after the recording has been made. There is no do it all Swiss army knife for fixing flicker on a shot; no real 100% foolproof plugin or method to get rid of it exists.
