Nikon P1000 Crazy Zoom but Subdued Slow Motion!

Nikon P1000

Nikon has either gone crazy or has analyzed a market that is actually alive and well when it comes to all in one prosumer compact cameras. The P900 was a best seller for several years in the segment with an 83x optical zoom formula of 24-2000mm equivalent. Now the new P1000 increases that range by 1000mm to do a previously ludicrous spec of 24 wide-angle to 3,000mm telephoto range or 125x optical zoom.

The sensor is tiny at 1/2.3″ the same as small compact cameras and just slightly larger than the typical phone sensor of 1/3″. This is what makes it possible for the camera to create such a zoom range without the lens being larger than a Napoleonic war artillery cannon.  The video modes are decent with 4k 30p but the high-speed modes are lackluster which is a shame considering this camera could be used effectively for extreme wildlife shots in super slow motion. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Slow Motion End Of Year Rumors & Predictions!

Slow Motion End Of Year Rumors & Predictions!

2017 was a very important year for affordable high-speed cameras. We had impressive performance across the board while prices kept mostly in the same brackets as 2016. You get increased recording time in the Sony RX series and incredible resolution on a 1080p camera at over 2000fps with the edgertronic SC2X.

We have some new rumors submitted that can shed some light on the releases for 2018 and beyond when it comes to high frame rate capable cameras. Rest assured that any and all rumors can change, be discredited in part or simply be completely false.  We have chosen only the ones that have a higher chance of being true. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Black Friday Slow Motion Deals 2017!

Black Friday Slow Motion Deals 2017!

It is that time of the year again when you get to use your savings to get that piece of gear you have been eyeing for a while. Discounted cameras and lenses start to inundate the web to make way for new upcoming releases next year.  We have distilled the slow motion capable gear that has a discount and listed it for easy access.

Be mindful that many cameras are being discounted for the sake of clearing inventory, which means that new models that may replace that line will come sometime soon usually after CES and NAB events.  If you still feel you can wait for new gear, by all means, do so but if you simply need a camera or lens right now and want a good deal, we try to make that task easier. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Nikon D850 Joins the 120fps 1080p club!

Nikon D850 Slow Motion

No matter how hard Sony and other mirror-less systems try to kill the Mirrored SLR camera, it seems Nikon and Canon refuse to go down for the count. The latest Nikon D850 is a camera that is better in every respect to it’s predecessor but now treads in the rarified air of hyper resolution sensors that do up to 9fps at full 45.7 Megapixels with the added battery grip.

Of note for us is the inclusion of a full HD 1080p 120fps mode which matches that on the Canon 1DX Mark II and the excellent quality Sony a9 mirror-less cameras.  There are no real samples of the D850 in slow motion aside from compressed preview videos that seem to show some aliasing in the mode. As to a crop we will have to wait and see but in 4k mode the camera is able to extract the image from the full sensor with no field of view crop which is the holy grail for large resolution sensors. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

AXIOM Beta Camera Kit in Production!

AXIOM Beta

The Axiom Apertus camera project is progressing forward with the completion of 25 developer Beta kits to backers of the camera. It is a working model without a final case and with ongoing software development. The camera is functional and has a Sony E-Mount at the moment but with the ability to change the mount if needed. The camera color science is being coded by A1ex of magic lantern fame. It will be a possibility to use digital “Film Stocks” at the push of a button to be able to match certain looks.

The footage from the beta camera is quite good with excellent film like characteristics in a 10-13 stop range.  There is a cinema camera feel that is absent from other cheaper camera options in the ILC and DSLR Camps.  The closest look is that from Blackmagic Design’s Cinema camera options.  When it comes to frame rates the Beta camera does 60fps full HD out of the HDMI but not much else. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Sony a9 Slow Motion Has Impressive Quality!

Sony a9 Slow Motion

The Sony a9 impressed with its full frame 20fps Stills shooting at  24.2 Megapixels.  It is probably the most groundbreaking camera performance wise we have come across for sports shooters in a decade.  The AF performance is second to none and as recent samples show it is just as good in video mode. Sony has cracked the continuous AF for video performance threshold where it can be used for production. That is no small feat.

What was totally unexpected was that the 120fps slow motion mode at full HD, which has a full sensor downsampling without crop of the 35mm FF sensor, is not only good; but probably the most detailed full HD slow motion mode we have seen in a DSLR or Mirrorless camera to date. → Continue Reading Full Post ←
