The new Sony Xperia XZ2 from Sony is their flagship phone for early 2018. It has a lot going for it like 4k HDR movie mode which is a first for a phone and from what we can see it really makes a difference in dynamic range and color on the footage. It also has the latest Snapdragon 845 SoC for increased performance with the battery savings to boot.
What we are interested however is the slow motion high frame rate capabilities which after the Galaxy S9 with 960fps HD 720p announcement, Sony needed to respond accordingly. Well, Sony has done so and they now claim 1080p 960fps slow-motion video on their XZ2 phone which is a one up on the Galaxy with more resolution. The HTC U11+ is a refined version of the U11 which was one of the better spec android phones of 2017. The new iteration boosts speed and a screen that goes from 5.5 inches to 6 inches. Space was accommodated for a larger screen without making the phone itself much bigger which is a feat of design and engineering.
For many, the big disappointment will be that it seems HTC is not making a US version of the U11 Plus and leaving it only for Asia and Europe at this time. The US market is very competitive and HTC has had a hard time penetrating the sales ranks of the Samsung, Apple and Google phones. The Galaxy Note 8 by Samsung is having a lot of interest pull these days. However, all of the camera improvement info leaks point to the same Slow Motion performance as the regular S8 which means it will have 240fps 720p but only up to 60p 1080p recording. 4k capped at 30fps as well. We waited long enough and now we have real world samples and comparison tests from the iPhone 7 in regards to higher frame rates. The iPhone 6s was the king of slow motion quality last year and now there were high hopes for the iPhone 7 to continue that reign however what comes down to is a mix of technology stagnation with a measure of slight improvement when it comes to shutter speed control and detail.
The iPhone 7 does 120fps 1080p as well as 720p at 240fps which is the same spec as last year’s iPhone 6s and a continuation of the feature. It has been used in many productions big and small as a crash camera for hard to get shots and some fun slow motion YouTube clips. There was a lot of expectation regarding the slow motion capability of the iPhone 7. Apple has been dominating the spec since the early days on the iPhone 4s. However while the processing and sensor quality have improved; the resolution and frame rates have stayed the same in the iPhone 7. There are huge speed increases and much more memory available to do a lot of things in video but Apple has chosen to stay at the same spec level in it’s latest phone.
The slow motion performance of the phone has improved with every iteration when it comes to quality and it will probably have a better dynamic range rating as well as better overall noise control. The spec remains at the top range in smart phones but it is not pushing the boundaries of what can be done in current hardware. These seems to be a large quantity of phones coming out every week and it is hard to keep track of them. The new Motorola Moto G4 Plus which is the flagship of the new Moto G affordable line which is the first phone release for Chinese based Lenovo the new owner of Motorola mobility; was to be a big introduction.
The Phone is competitive but a little under-powered, it retains some of the design cues of the last Moto G3 phone line but with a distinctive Lenovo style change by adding the square finger print reader button.
