Sony Palm 4k Camcorders Have 960fps!

Sony Palm 4k Camcorders

Sony has released three new Palm Sized 4k camcorders on the wake left by the RX10 IV all in one  1″ Sensor camera, these new cameras aim to produce professional results in 4k and with the use of broadcast features like 3G-SDI in the case of the Z90V allow for real time ENG and EFP production.

These cameras have the same  sensor and buffer mode as the RX10 IV camera but in a more traditional non SLR like form factor. The FDR-AX700 at the lower end of the range lacks a Proper microphone mount and XLR inputs with volume controls but they all share the same specs in lens 12x – and internal codecs aside from broadcast features.  This includes the HFR mode which seems to be identical to the RX10 IV offering 120fps continuous and up to 7 seconds of 240fps near full HD and reduced resolution 480fps and 960fps. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Insta 360 One Has Dual Slow Motion!

Insta 360 One

The Company Insta360, maker of the Insta 360 Pro which is a more high end multi camera solution has released a new 360 degree action camera that can be mounted almost anywhere and deliver pretty good quality for VR and 360 degree videos on the fly. The new Insta 360 One is a democratization of 360 degree cameras and probably a direct competitor to the upcoming GoPro 360 degree camera solution.

The camera includes two slow motion modes that allow it to shoot 360 degree video at higher frame rates but with some drawbacks. Resolution takes a big hit compared to the 4k native resolution which is great. However it is still usable enough to produce web results that allow for some degree of flexibility on smaller screens. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Galaxy S8 Slow Motion Samples!

Galaxy S8 Slow Motion Samples

There was a lot of commotion online when the rumors of the Galaxy S8 having 1000 fps video surfaced. However that turned out to be pure unfounded speculation. Still the phone did offer slow motion of 240fps at 720p which is not bad for a phone but hardly flagship these days. Still that does not detract from the ability to capture cool slow-mo shots.

The quality is close to 720p on the Galaxy S8 but not entirely there. We see some softness, aliasing and moire in the shots with a tendency to be more apparent in diagonal lines and repeating detail textures.  Still the quality is on par with the iPhone 7 and Google Pixel XL phones. We have gathered a few samples for you to judge. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Slow Mo Quality!

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV

We have gotten a few questions about the EOS 5D Mark IV when it comes to it’s 120fps 720p slow motion mode.  We covered it back in August but samples were hard to find back then; all that has changed and now we can rate and position the camera in our HSC Camera Guide ranking.  While it will not win any contests for resolution or frame rate we think it is a good all around camera with useful features for video enthusiasts.

The negatives like high price,  Moire & Aliasing prone slow mo resolution, huge inefficient 4k bit rates on an old codec, 1.74x crop in 4k recording and big system bulk still apply for this camera.  The Panasonic GH5 for instance destroys the 5D Mark IV in the video spec department but that is ok considering the 5D Mark IV is a stills workhorse with a full frame sensor first and an excellent AF and high ISO performance package. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Vimble S Phone Gimbal on Kickstarter Funded!

Vimble S Animation

There is nothing more annoying than capturing slow motion footage or any video on your cellphone and later discover that it is full of rolling shutter wobble and artifacts that simply cannot be used without inducing motion sickness.  The new Kickstarter project called Vimble S aims to offer a very low cost alternative and compatibility with a variety of phones for 3 axis full stabilization with a smart handheld gimbal.

The Vimble S campaign was aiming for about 50k USD to fund it’s manufacturing operations and initial expansion. Much to the surprise of everyone it was funded in less than two days and now aims for a 100k USD funding ceiling and maybe more. It supports several smartphones including the iPhone 7 and Galaxy S7 with their own custom iOS and Android App! → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Sony FS7 Mark II Slow Motion Stays at 180fps!

Sony FS7 Mark II

In what could be condensed into a mild refresh at best; the newly released Sony FS7 Mark II Super 35mm 4k Camera does little to entice owners of the Sony FS7 to upgrade. It seems to be a way to replace the camera and entice new buyers without actually offering anything really revolutionary.

To be fair there are a few improvements like the E Mount now has a PL like locking mechanism for easier lens detachment without twisting. This is ideal for lenses with filters and matte box attached. Also the integrated electronic Variable ND brings it in line with other cameras that offer this compelling option to avoid ND filters altogether while setting the camera for 1/180º shutter. Added also is BT.2020 color space for UHD recording at 10 and 12 bits, 10 assignable buttons vs 6 in the Mark 1 and a few new LEDs and ergonomic fixes from user feedback on the Mark 1. → Continue Reading Full Post ←
