Fuji got quite a few products out at CES 2016 for photographers but nearly all had no real slow motion capabilities except for the Fuji XP90 Rugged waterproof compact camera. It is the same 16.4 Megapixel CMOS sensor with 5x optical zoom and a pretty standard 28mm lens at the wide end as last year’s Fuji XP80.
It is still shockproof from 6ft, waterproof to 50ft and freeze-proof down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit. But aside from the harsh treatment capabilities the camera has a larger 3 inch screen vs 2.7″ on it’s predecessor and the 1080p video spec has been upped to 60p for a little slowdown.→ Continue Reading Full Post ←
The end of 2015 is upon us and now it is time to look back and see what the year brought us in the shape of affordable slow motion gear. While many cameras had higher frame rates, only a few really shined and delivered on the promise of offering HD quality and higher than normal frames per second in an attractive price point and one that you may already own if you have a recent mobile device.
The RED Scarlethas always had a stigma to it since inception. It was supposed to be a 3k camera for 3k USD back when it was planned. With a fixed lens and slow motion capabilities all while shooting REDCode RAW video. That camera never materialized and in turn the Red Scarlet with modularity was born. Not quite an Epic but also a lot more expensive than the original promise. It however delivered the image quality promised but not in the slow motion front. That is however until today with the Scarlet-W camera.
It has a 5K Full Frame (5120 x 2700) RED Dragon sensor with a 16.5 stops of dynamic range. That is some of the best DR numbers quoted for a motion digital camera. Due to overwhelming user requests Microsoft has finally added with an update to its Windows 10 Camera app the ability to shoot slow-motion video on some Lumia smartphones. The feature is not terribly groundbreaking as it is limited for now to 120 fps at 720p resolution. However this may open the door to higher frame rates like 240p and 480p in future devices as now the feature is not completely ignored. Windows 10 Phone users rejoice, well until the platform fully launches in the near future.
