The Panasonic AU-EVA1 Super 35mm Cinema Camera is a first for the company in several key fronts. For starters, it is abandoning the Micro 4/3 sensor in turn for a more industry standard S35 module which has a larger area and in turn much better light gathering power. Gone also is the micro 4/3 lens mount which Panasonic favors and in its place a Canon EF Electronic mount which could have been called blasphemy to see this in a product line of this price range for Panasonic.
Since the sensor-flange distance is increased you will not be able to use the Micro 4/3 or 4/3 lenses you were using with an AF100 for example. When it comes to slow motion this camera is no slouch with 240fps continuous recording to SDXC II v90 cards in both 2k resolution and full HD 1080p. In a very quiet update last week Sony released a low end action camera to cater to the lower end crowd that wants better performance than the current GoPro options but with a limited budget resource. In comes the Sony FDR-X3000 4K Action Camera that brings 4k and impressive image stabilization to the $399 USD action camera bracket.
The big deal in this camera is the Balanced Optical SteadyShot (or B.O.S.S.) which uses the entire optical lens path to reduce vibration and motion. Previous systems only moved an element inside the lens to alter the light path. NAB 2016 has turned out to be subdued in product announcements when it comes to cameras. Sure there are a few of not but nothing earth shattering for price conscious video enthusiasts. The Sony FS5 is still a great camera and the new firmware to be released in May-June 2016 will give it more features and power.

It’s been an impressive year for Sony camera releases when it comes to slow motion capabilities. We saw a resurgence of real innovation in the space with the Sony RX10 II and the Sony RX100 IV which have amazing quality for the price even when the limitations are there when it comes to quality vs time recorded which when it comes to getting the utmost frame resolution the higher frame rates are limited to just 2 seconds. DJI Has announced a portable 3-Axis Gimbal camera system called DJI OSMO that rivals the best handheld camera options from the competition with an integrated ZENMUSE X3 camera “Same as the one found in the DJI Inspire 1 drone. You get a ton of standard features like an intelligent panning mode and auto panorama with also a timelapse & intervalometer to boot. You will need to supply a Phone or other portable device with iOS or Android in order to have a live preview screen and set up the camera / adjust settings.

The newly announced Sony PXW-FS5 Professional camcorder is like a hybrid of the venerable FS700 of 2012 and last years darling the Sony FS7. It however offers a lot in the way of portability with it’s small profile and a slow motion mode akin to that in the RX100 IV and RX10 II. It seems to be a refined higher resolution mode of the FS700’s slow motion capabilities with better dynamic range and less artifacts to boot. Call it FS700 slowmo v2.0!
The camera comes with an HFR High Frame Rate mode akin to what was introduced in the lower end Sony line this year.
