It seems that GoPro is not quite done with camera updates this year. They just released a very small variant of the Hero 4 hardware called the GoPro Hero 4 Session. Some jokes have already come out about the name like the next Re-Session Camera to own. However this is more of an evolutionary and reductionist product than any release GoPro has ever made before.
The Hero 4 Black is a powerhouse little camera with great frame rates for slow motion and 4k video at 30p. Some have criticized the codec in 4k mode as being too lossy and we agree to a point. Samsung has released an update to the Samsung NX1 4k Camera firmware now (Version 1.3) that among other things it improves the ease of use and selection of the high speed slow motion video 120fps mode. The improvements are varied and even ad a new USB control application to interface with the camera. Minor bug fixes and enhancements in workflow and usability are also added. On February 4th GoPro released the firmware version 2.0 for the GoPro Hero 4 Black and Silver cameras. There has now been a large adoption of the firmware in the hands of owners and there is no indication of problems or stability issues with the update. The update includes a 240fps 720p upgrade from the previous 120fps and it looks and works very good. A 2.7k 60fps mode is also included which is a first for a camera in this price range.

In part one and part two of this article series we took a good look at the free options available to take care of flicker for timelapse, regular footage and high speed over-crank video. For part 3 and 4 we will look at the paid options.
Today Panasonic has released the GH4 Firmware v2.1. It is mainly a usability/performance and external recorder update. No slow motion bit rate or frame rate improvements on this release. We analyzed a before and after on the files and detected no change in data. However recorded 4k footage has performance improvements. It is good to see that the camera continues to be updated by Panasonic and adding features filmmakers care about.
