In what may be the most important announcement of 2015for affordable slow motion video; Sony has unveiled the DSC RX10II (DSC-RX10M2) which is the DSLR like long zoom pro-sumer camera direct replacement of the RX10 and the DSC RX100 IV (DSC-RX100M4) a3x zoom compact camera a replacement of the RX100 III of last year. The kicker here is the amazingly featured super slow motion mode offering 120fps, 240fps, 480fps all the way up to 960fps with a pre trigger function and using the XAVC S Codec in a 1080p frame.

It has been nearly 6 years since the EOS 7D DSLR was introduced in September 2009. That was the last time canon offered a frame rate bump which was 720p at 60fps. It was an ok mode but highly aliased and of low quality. Now Canon has unveiled two new cameras that jump the frame rate to 120fps. The first camera is the all inclusive Canon XC10 which is like a new incarnation of the all in one do it all camera with some pro features that seem to separate it from cameras like the Panasonic FZ1000 MSRP $749.
On the eve of March 31, 1999 the world was exposed to a new type of visual effect thanks to the release of a movie that changed and influenced movies for the next decade. Next week January 6-9, in Las Vegas Nevada the 2015 CES show will take place. Usually the show doesn’t show much in the way of hi speed but a few gems have come out of the show in the past like the Panasonic W850 & V750 which a year later still hold their own as the best slow motion general purpose camcorders in quality with the 9th and 10th place in our slow-mo camera guide. These have recently come down in price considerably!
The Sony PXW-FS7 Pro camera besides the 4k up to 30p spec also offers a great 180fps slow motion mode at 1080p continuous. We expected the quality to be as good or better than the FS700 and it was the right call. The quality of the slow motion is extremely good and uses a better XAVC codec; And will position for now the FS7 in the 3rd spot of the camera list guide right behind the FS700 displacing the GH4 to 4th place.
