The new Sony FDR-X1000V Action cam has been arriving to users and there is a lot to like.  For starters the image stabilization while “Digital only not optical” is excellent and something GoPro needs to include in it’s offerings. There is some stuttering in heavy motion but does work very well. Resolution will be reduced by stabilization as the image borders are cropped on the Sony FDR-X1000V.

The color is very saturated the low light beats the GoPro easily when it comes to detail. It is still no low light champ but it does offer better performance than the Hero 4 Black. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Edgertronic Monochrome $200 Price Cut!

camera_front_v2

The Monochrome version of the edgertronic high speed camera is now $200 USD cheaper due to a price cut based on higher than expected sales for the model.  From an initial $5,695.00 to a now $5,495.00 – This puts it in parity with the color version of the hardware.   The Monochrome version is more sensitive to light and it is a better fit for resolution and light constrained needs.  Many scientific applications work well with monochrome cameras as the Bayer pattern is scrapped for a full resolution black and white raw image that preserves the full linear res.

Edgertronic Quote “The monochrome camera has been selling very well in the industrial, scientific and research markets. Due to it’s strong sales, we’ve been able to negotiate a better price on the monochrome sensor and pass the savings on to you. So, now both color and monochrome are available for $5495 (shipping and options are extra of course).” → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Droid Turbo and FPS1000 update

DroidTurbo

The recently released Droid Turbo from Motorola available on Verizon in the USA has a 120fps 720p mode in the specs and we have a sample that shows that the slow motion mode while clean of noise is quite bad in the aliasing and moire department as resolution lines seem to be skipped to arrive at 720p at a higher frame rate. The iPhone 6 continues to be currently the best slow motion phone for your money. The Turbo is clearly no match but it can still let you produce some middle of the road slow mo videos for fun!

Source: cool blue gear reviews.

We have finalized the analysis on the Sony a7s and the Panasonic FZ1000.  We have placed the Sony in 4th place and the Pana in 5th place in our HSC Camera Guide.  Even though the a7s is only 720p it has less aliasing than the FZ1000 at 120fps and the resolution seems very close. The Sony full frame also has noise characteristics that are much better than the 1″ sensor on the FZ1000.

All in all the Panasonic GH4 in 3rd place is still a better quality slow motion camera with conformed slow motion in camera to 24p and while a bit soft at 1080p it delivers about 14% better resolution than the a7s. → Continue Reading Full Post ←
