Today has been quite busy in portable device land with the release of the Moto X, Moto G and the One Plus 2 handsets. The hype and rumors regarding slow motion modes on these phones turned out to be way ahead of the norm and what we are left with is the same tired old specs of yesteryear when it comes to slow motion performance. 720p at 120fps seems to be the norm for an afterthought slow motion feature. Apple for example continues to up the ante with 240fps and possibly more in the upcoming iPhone 6s refresh. There is nothing wrong with these phones but if you want slow motion performance in your portable handset, the latest Moto and One Plus 2 are not what you would consider optimal. They however offer pretty good feature sets and great cameras for normal video applications and still capture.

The One Plus 2 is a phone flagship design for less money than you would normally pay for such a device. it has a modified Android OS “Cyanogenmod” that is fast, free of bloatware and very good with battery life. It has optical image stabilization, large pixels for a 13 megapixel sensor, fingerprint sensor and a great alert switch so you can deactivate alerts in a custom way when you are sleeping, in a movie theater or simply want to disconnect for a while. The Moto X has kind of always suffered from a mid range hardware complex; overall pretty good but never has had a high end feel to the feature set compared to rivals like the iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy Series. If the latest Moto X rumors of the phone for 2015 refresh are to be believed the camera on the Moto X 2015 might go punch to punch with the best around while at the same time offer even more with slow motion features that rival the iPhone 6 in some cases and beat it in others.

Apple has upgraded without a lot of fanfare the iPod Touch and it brings in a bunch of performance improvements that take it closer to what the iPhone can do without actually becoming a phone. One of these features is a 120fps HD 720p video capture mode akin to that one on the iPhone 5 and iPhone 6. Sadly no 240fps video mode has been included in this device.

The rumor mill has lit up with all kinds of leaked info about the upcoming iPhone replacement the iPhone 6s and 6s+. When it comes to high frame rates the current iPhone doesn’t disappoint; however the prospect of higher resolution slow motion is tantalizing in an Apple product. The current iPhone 6 spec is capped at 120fps and 240fps 1280*720 HD res and 60fps at 1920*1080 Full HD resolution. While the resolution is hardly to be considered HD at the moment considering it is skipping lines and creating artifacts; the look and feel of the footage thanks to clever processing is not that bad. It is still on the top ranks for slow motion phones to own.
DxO the company associated with DXO Optics Pro RAW conversion and for it’s popular camera sensor rating scores has released their first hardware product based on a coupling with the Apple iPhone and iPad devices with lightning connector.
The camera attaches in the thunderbolt charging port and lets you swivel the phone or tablet screen for easier viewing angles. The power of the camera comes from what could be the highest quality portable device camera to date. The RAW and Super RAW modes claim unprecedented image quality with scores in RAW mode of 70 DxO points and in Super RAW of 85 points. In contrast the original full frame Canon 5D Mark 1 only gathered a sensor score of 71 in RAW mode. At first glance the LG G4 Android smart phone with it’s RAW image capture and completely manual camera might seem like the best ever camera phone to date and it is in many respects but; when it comes to slow motion it is barely mentioned in the specs. It does have a slow motion mode but after looking at samples it is far away from an iPhone 6 in quality and even below the Galaxy S6 which disappointed.
