Google Phone SDK 3.0 Hints at 240fps!

GoogleCamera3

The website Android Police has done a pretty robust tear down of the new android Camera SDK v3.0 giving a sneak peak of what is to come for many android phones that support the camera module application.  The SDK v3.0 comes bundled with the Android 6 release which means all compatible devices upgraded to the new OS will have a chance to try some or all of the new features planned for the camera release.  Your mileage depending on your phone manufacturer may vary but it could mean support for many new features like 240fps slow motion video which will compete favorably with the iPhone 6 and 6s in these high frame rate modes.

Top features in the SDK 3.0:
  • Smart Burst- Fast burst of images if supported by hardware!
  • Creations: Includes animated images and Auto Awesomes.
  • Slow Motion:  120fps or 240fps User selectable!
  • Auto HDR+ Plus: HDR images from a rapid burst.
  • Dirty Lens detection: Tells user if lens is smudged!
  • Improvements to the interface.

<string name="hfr_mode_240fps">Slow motion is set to 240 fps</string>
<string name="hfr_mode_off">Slow motion is off</string>

Note:  Regarding  “Google Phone SDK 3.0 ” be aware that if your sensor and portable device combination do to limitations is not able to do higher frame rates these new features will not be accessible.  It will be interesting to see which phones are upgraded with the capability as the Android 6 marshmallow updates roll out!  → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Summer Slow Motion Fun!

SlowmoSummer

Summer can be fun but it also can be quite dull for camera releases; most of the exciting cameras have already been released and nothing really big will surface until September like the iPhone 6 replacement or a new GoPro Hero camera.  This however opens the window to admire some of the latest high speed videos shot around the web. Samsung Galaxy S6 edge + and Note 5 Announced!

GalaxyS6PlusNote5

Today the Samsung Galaxy S6+ Edge and the Galaxy Note 5 were announced with somewhat subdued fanfare.  For slow motion aficionados there is not much news regarding the release.  While the Note 5 is a big upgrade in performance compared to the Note 4 of last year; the S6+ is basically a larger screen Galaxy S6 edge.

Slow motion on the original Galaxy S6 was limited to 120fps and the new phone has no changes; the S6 Edge + shares the same camera specs  at a max of 120fps at 720p .  And while Samsung has basicly the same camera setup on the Note 5 ypou could expect similar performance. However as of today there is no confirmation of 120fps on the Galaxy Note 5. There is confirmation of 60fps at 1080p on the Note 5 but no higher slow motion. Even in Samsung’s direct specs it just mentions Slow Motion Mode. We guess it is the deliberate omission of some touting of specs to cater to a different market. Since the Note 4 did 120fps at 720p it is safe to assume the Note 5 at least be on par with it’s predecessor. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

OnePlus 2 Slow Motion and Video Samples!

OP_s02_c014

The OnePlus 2 has been a big success in pre-orders with over 30,000 phones ordered in 64 seconds.  However people from the company got the One Plus 2 phone early and have been shooting footage and images with the phone in the last week. The quality is nothing short of amazing for regular video with macro capabilities that rival the best video cameras of a few years ago. The quality of the codec and detail extracted by the lens are extremely good.

When it comes to slow motion the quality of 120fps 720p is also better than other rivals in the Samsung and HTC space with less aliasing and Moire artifacts. It is still not perfect 720p but it comes very close.  The iPhone 6 still provides a better slow motion capability with 240fps as an option also.   Things are going to heat up with more releases soon in the mobile world, Apple 6s phone will probably debut sometime in September with improved specs and Android phones with better resolution and slow motion frame rates should be available by Christmas. → Continue Reading Full Post ←
