Now that the Galaxy S10 has been shipping to customers for a couple of weeks we can now see a plethora of video samples showing the 240fps 1080p, 960fps 720p and 4k 60p high frame rate modes. We can clearly see a better compression on the new S10 samples compared to the Galaxy S9 in all modes. There is still some aliasing and moire but it is very well controlled.
Noise doesn’t become a problem unless it is very dark which means the Samsung noise reduction is doing an incredible job. It is maybe too clean as some detail seems to be flattened out to control for artifacts. All the Galaxy S10 variants shoot the same quality slow motion in the main camera module so if you want to only get the S10e for it’s lower price of $749 you get to keep the high-speed feature intact.→ Continue Reading Full Post ←

It looks like DJI has not set in stone the frame rate spec of the recently released OSMO Pocket which we found to be excellent in handling and gives a beautiful low light stabilized image considering the small sensor size and price. It even beat out the GoPro Hero 7 in dynamic range and noise control but fell short of frame rates being on our good side. Thanks to our reader Frank for the tip!
In a new video by Drone NewsGuy from Youtube, the pro app and latest beta firmware for the OSMO Pocket are tested and you can enable a somewhat hidden setting to get 200fps in real terms out of the small device. The catch is that the setting requires the phone app to be activated every time you want to use it and will remain there until you change settings to something else. We would love for DJI to allow the 200fps setting right out of the box on the interface and not only that, allow for even greater fps in 720p mode and even a small VGA mode for users needing that extra frame rate.→ Continue Reading Full Post ←
Early on in the beta testing of the device, the OSMO Pocket by DJI released this week had gimbal stabilized 1080p 120fps included in the specs. However, by launch, the slow motion frame rate disappeared. There were anecdotal discussions that the device overheated in the mode and that is why it was pulled out of the product launch. However, there are no official statements to back this up.
DJI Should release the new firmware update for the OSMO Pocket by December 15th just in time for Christmas delivery of the product. At Just $349 USD, it will probably be a GoPro killer as a stocking stuffer during the holiday season. Initial samples show the low light video quality besting the GoPro but the slow-motion mode is still less detailed than the Action Camera. Now that a few days have passed we now have the first few samples of what the Galaxy Note 9 is capable of in 960fps slow-motion mode. It shows about the same effective resolution as the Galaxy S9 and S9+ which share the same camera system. The Note 9 is supposed to increase the dynamic range but it is unclear how much benefit it will show in a resolution starved 720p high-speed mode.
The best selling factor for the Note 9 as a slow-motion device is the doubling of recording time to 0.4 seconds from the 0.2sec available on the Galaxy S9. This transforms into a 12.8-second video played back at NTSC 30p which makes it much more enjoyable than the 6.4 sec on the other Samsung phone.→ Continue Reading Full Post ←
By popular demand, we have found some new samples for both the OnePlus 6 and the Xiaomi Mi 8 phones for you to see. We have to give the nod between these two phones to the OnePlus 6 as it offers 240fps 1080p and 3.75 seconds worth of 720p 480fps and even 60p 4k. The quality on the super slow motion modes is not up there with a dedicated slow-motion camera but it is a big improvement in the recording department by allowing 3.75 secs on the 480p mode on the OnePlus 6 compared to the very restrictive 960fps 0.24sec on the Galaxy S9.
The Xiaomi Mi 8 is a big improvement from their earlier phones but simply cannot compete in terms of frame rates with the best the Android world has to offer. The quality on any phone will be restricted by the memory buffer, codec and read-out speed from the sensor. Quality still has a ways to go for being true HD or Full HD so remember before choosing a phone, it may not do as well as that fancy Slow Motion on Youtube or TV.→ Continue Reading Full Post ←
