Phantom TMX 7510 does 76000 fps in HD!

Phantom TMX 7510

The scientists at Vision Research are at it again at their favorite pastime of hyper slow motion gear creation.  The new TMX 7510 Phantom camera is the fastest ever in their arsenal with a mind-bending spec of 75 Gigapixels throughput which is capable of delivering 76,000fps  1 Megapixel resolution or slightly higher than HD at 1280 x 800px.

The camera features the first BSI or Back-side illuminated sensor ever used in a Phantom camera. This allows for much better low-light performance which is crucial for slow motion applications.  The camera tops out at a ridiculous 1.75 million fps frame rate at 1280 x 32px in standard width mode or 640 x 64px in Binned mode.  One second recorded at that speed creates a file that plays back for 972min or just over 16hrs in a 30fps timeline.  Yikes! → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Sony A1 Slow Motion has 8x Mode!

Sony A1 Slow Motion

Just in time for the Japanese Olympics if they ever take place, Sony has released the Sony Alpha 1 or A1 for short which is probably the most powerful mirrorless camera ever produced.  Customary for Japanese camera manufacturers in Olimpic years, the likes of Canon and Nikon have released their professional flagship products like the  1DX and D6 which are still SLR mirrored products that have the highest possible Autofocus features for a camera of that type as well as speed and dependability.

Sony has had some inroads in that space with the Sony a9 series but they were missing a higher megapixel count version that could really differentiate it from the pack and the A1 seems to be just that kind of product. By shooting 8k video at 24,25 and 30p it becomes future-proof for the next decade as far as resolution goes and by taking 30 images per second in stills mode at the full 50MP resolution with AF Tracking, it is one blinding fast beast.  The fact that it also shoots 120fps 4k and 240fps Full HD doesn’t hurt it either.

The Sony A1 is probably the fastest mass production professional hybrid camera ever made. The speed required for 50 megapixels at 30fps means that it is processing and saving in RAW format or RAW+JPG to CF Express Cards  at 1.5 Billion Pixels/Second and all of this while using the 120Hz continuous intelligent Auto Focus for people and animals.

  • 8x Slow motion is 240fps played in a 30fps timeline!

The Slow motion frame rates are also here with up to 4x 120fps in 4k 10 bit at up to 280Mbits/sec and 100 to 240fps 8x in Full HD 1080p at 50Mbps.   We can see the sample below that contains several clips at 4k 120fps and some intercut 240fps Full HD like the divers shot in Hunters Of Light below.  We can safely say that the quality at 4k 120fps 10 bit is near perfect but we still cannot attest to the quality of a file in Full HD at 100, 120, 200 and 240fps derived from a Full Frame sensor recording from a 50MP source.

We have confirmed that the camera has a 21 Megapixel crop factor in APS-C size for stills and possibly video which probably means that all the higher 1080p frame rates are possibly extracted from the crop area of the sensor and not from the full 50MP area.

ZTE Axon 7 Phone Joins the 240fps club!

ZTEAxon7

The Chinese Smartphone Maker ZTE has released the Axon 7 handset with some impressive camera features like a newly released 20MP Samsung ISOCELL sensor,  F1.8 lens aperture, sapphire glass lens front element for scratch-proof and flare resistance, optical image stabilization in the lens elements and dual pixel on-sensor phase detection auto-focus; not to mention a handy dual LED Flash.

Other phone specs compete well with other more well known brand flagship devices like the Galaxy S7. such as a 5.5-inch AMOLED panel  2560 x 1440 Quad-HD resolution with 2.5D curved Gorilla Glass 4 and a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset.

Two models will be released 4GB RAM and 64GB storage or a 6GB RAM plus 128GB storage in the high end range.  microSD card slot is also included; 3140 mAh battery with  Quick-charge 3.0 standard, fingerprint reader and a USB Type-C connector. Android 6 Marshmallow will be the OS included with some modifications.

Slow motion spec?

There is no doubt that this phone is a top contender for features ounce by ounce. The only real caveat we have is that the slow motion mode while great at 240fps 720p HD; tops out at 1080p 30fps “Yes not even 60fps” which is the same in 4k at 30p.

ZTE Axon 7 Slowmotion Camera Test 240fps 720p by Mobilegeeks.de:

The video above being one of the few available at this time shows ok resolution with a bit of aliasing as it’s common at these fast frame rates on either Samsung or Apple smartphones. There still seems to be line skipping to some degree but a clear preference for aliasing instead of color moire.   The ZTE Axon 7 joins a small club of phones that do 240fps but is not at the high end here for ignoring higher resolutions like 1080p 120fps.

It is still good news to see more manufacturers pushing fast frame rates.

Launch is expected to be in China first during the month of July and other parts of the world by August.

MSRP: Axon 7 will be $449 USD  and or €409 Euros in Europe,Fully Unlocked!

LG Action CAM LTE Does 120fps at 720p & 4k 30p!

LGActionCamLTE

LG Released the wrapping this week on the LG Action CAM LTE  which is a GoPro Hero Competitor that has a trick up it’s sleeve. The LTE Part means that you can add 4G LTE or 3G Data to the camera to stream live video over cellular data towers to potentially any internet connected server in the globe.

As to how powerful it will be remains to be seen but the use as a live car Dash Camera, home surveillance CCTV camera and streaming directly to Youtube, Facebook or Periscope seems a pretty incredible proposition at a maximum of 720p 30p over data.

LG Action CAM LTE Specifications:

  • Camera: 1/2.3-inch 12.3MP / 1.55 x 1.55㎛pixels
  • Connectivity: LTE / 3G / Wi-Fi 802.11 b, g, n / USB Type-C 2.0 / Bluetooth 4.1
  • Video Recording: UHD 30fps / FHD 60fps / HD 120fps
  • Video Live Streaming: HD 30fps
  • Memory: 2GB RAM / 4GB ROM (OS only) / microSD (up to 2TB)
  • Size: 35 x 35 x 77.9mm
  • Weight: 95g
  • Battery: 1,400mAh
  • Others: IP67 / GPS / Accelerometer / Gyroscope
  • Color: Light Gray

As you can see the camera is not as rugged as the GoPro Hero Black or similar which are able to withstand several atmospheres of water pressure.  This LG Action Cam LTE can only do 30 minutes under 1 meter of water.  While this won’t be a problem for the majority of uses, forget about scuba or snorkeling for prolonged times with it.

Not all is lost on the weatherproof front as a more rugged case will be released in the Fall to go with the camera that will make it withstand more pressure and abuse.

The Battery life at 1400mAh is rated for up to 4 hours of continuous 720p HD recording.  It is a 4k camera at 30fps and a slow motion camera at 120fps HD 720p or 60fps 1080p.  It will not win any prizes for being a frame rate champ but good to have.

To some it may mean the camera is more like a smartphone with sensors and data than an action camera but we see it as a blend between the two that can herald a new type of hyper connected camera.   For live media savvy people, this might be an incredible solution for live streaming video content on a very affordable level. If you don’t mind the live stream limitation of HD 720p at just 30fps!

Pricing and availability:

The LG Action Cam LTE will be launched in Korea by June 2016,  LG Says it is looking at establishing relations with Europe and America to release the camera this year across the globe. The price is still under wraps but we expect it to be competitive with the GoPro Hero 4 Black flagship model or under $500; otherwise we think it will be overpriced for the current market.

We hope to have more info and video samples once they become available by June!

CRAFT Camera Modularity Promises 120fps!

CraftCamera

Something that came out of NAB 2016 is the paper launch of the CRAFT Camera a modular low cost professional camera that can record in Pro Res and Cinema DNG RAW  with more formats to be announced.

It is unclear at this point if frame rates will ever be higher than 120fps but since the 4k spec also includes them; it remains a solid option for 4k slow motion at 120fps or 5x slow motion at 24p playback. For a 4k camera the pricing of $2,984 for a full 4k Cinema package is not to shabby!

Preliminary TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

  • Full technical specifications will be announced early this summer.HD Video Element, Super 16mm CMOS Sensor with Global Shutter (1920×1080, 1280×720)4K Video Element, Super 35mm CMOS Sensor with Global Shutter (4096 x 2160, 1920×1080, 1280 x 720)Frame rates  23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94, 60 Fast and slow frame rate speeds at intervals up to 120fpsRecording Formats Cinema DNG and ProRes (additional formats will announced).

Starting with a Super 16mm sensor with resolution of 1920 x 1080, the HD Video Element produces stunning images. It operates at high speeds up to 120fps. Key features include 13 stops of dynamic range, global shutter PL, EF, and MFT Speed Mount options, and ND Sled filter technology. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

IPhone SE Retains Same Slo-Mo Specs As 6s!

iphoneSE

Apple today unveiled the iPhone SE;  little kept secret due to huge leaks in the rumor sites. What was not confirmed was the camera specs which as it turns out are exactly the same as the bigger and more expensive iPhone 6s flagship brother.

The camera should yield the exact same performance as the iPhone 6s which means great news when it comes to slow motion aficionados. 120fps at full 1080p and 240fps at 720p made their way in the specs which gives some indication that Apple cut very little from the phone; with the biggest omission being 3D touch. → Continue Reading Full Post ←
