Upscaling high speed video to usable Full HD and or 4k!

Our of our readers Chinito Pinoy has shared a pretty remarkable video with us that we would like to share.  It is upscaling of sub HD resolution high-speed video at 240p, 480p and 960p from the Sony RX10 IV at 480 and 960fps and the A7S Mark III at 240fps from Sub HD to 4k UHD.

Black Friday Slow Motion Deals 2017!

Black Friday Slow Motion Deals 2017!

It is that time of the year again when you get to use your savings to get that piece of gear you have been eyeing for a while. Discounted cameras and lenses start to inundate the web to make way for new upcoming releases next year.  We have distilled the slow motion capable gear that has a discount and listed it for easy access.

Be mindful that many cameras are being discounted for the sake of clearing inventory, which means that new models that may replace that line will come sometime soon usually after CES and NAB events.  If you still feel you can wait for new gear, by all means, do so but if you simply need a camera or lens right now and want a good deal, we try to make that task easier.

Black Friday Slow Motion Deals 2017:

1. The Chronos 1.4c Camera has been shipping for a few months and at $2,999.00 for the 8GB Memory Module option it is probably the best price/performance combo for real slow motion today.  You may need to pre-order for teh Jamuary 2018 build batch. First come first serve.

While the sensor is 2/3″ in size it is still good enough in good light to be 720p HD broadcast quality at 1,502 fps.  The Black Friday Deal for the Chronos includes free shipping, good until the end of Cyber Monday, November 27th. The code is BLACKFRIDAY17 at check out for Free Shipping.

2. The Panasonic GH4 with up to 96fps Full HD recording has seen an enormous price drop from a high of $1350 just last month to just under $900 USD.  This is a great deal for a very capable camera that shoots excellent quality 4k video at 100Mbps and 1080p up to 200mbps.  It will lack the high-end specs of the GH5 like 180fps Full HD but if you want a capable all-around camera for under $900 USD, this is a hard to pass up a bargain.

3. The Yi 4k+ which is a GoPro Hero 4 Black competitor with 4k 60ps is now discounted to $299.99 from an initial introductory price of $339.94  We, however, recommend that you get the GoPro Hero 6 Black instead even when it is $200 dollars more.  The quality and frame rate options are worth it in our opinion and will futureproof your purchase for a while longer.

4. If you can live with what the Hero 5 can do then, for $349.00 now you can own the previous generation GoPro flagship camera.  It is not an incredible deal but it is still a GoPro with a built-in screen and 4k 30fps video.

5. The Sony NEX-FS700 has long been a favorite of slow-motion enthusiasts. And while it has been already matched in terms of performance by cameras in the Sony RX line when it comes to frame rates it is still an APS-C sized sensor with 240fps Near Full HD slow motion and up to 960fps at reduced resolution. All with the ability to use interchangeable lenses from Sony E Mount and with adapters a plethora of options like Nikon F and Canon EF lenses. This combination cannot be matched for the price of $3299.95 which is what it currently sells for. This camera used to be above $8k not to long ago. It is still a respectable camera with built-in ND filters and Sony Gamma curves.  4k recording, however, will have to be done with an external recorder.

6. One of our favorite cameras of last year was the Sony RX 100 V with its increased resolution in slow motion recording and double the recording time of the RX100 IV.  Amazon.com has the camera at now just $948 USD but with a $50 Amazon Gift card included which brings the price to $898.00 USD for the camera, and you get to buy $50 worth of accessories or a tripod for it.  We think it is a really good deal for this camera.

7. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium & XZs are capable of up to 1000fps slow-motion recording at 720p resolution. Their recording time is just under 0.3 seconds at that speed but you can still get a lot of usable slow motion shots with this phone and it’s motion eye technology.  When they first shipped their price reached up to $899 but now are heavily discounted. These are great Sony Phones and better yet at these crazy prices.  Seems if you wait long enough phones just become plenty enough on the shelves even in the same year they are released to become extremely cheap compared to comparable flagship devices of today.

8. Black Friday is probably the best time of the year to get a discounted price phone.  The iPhone 6 & 7 both offer up to 240fps slow motion at 720p and up to 120fps at 1080p for the 7.  Other phones offer similar specs. Amazon has a special refurbished phone selection for Black Friday with for example iPhone 6s Plus phones unlocked for $364 USD.  Many more deals to be had. BEST SLOW MOTION CAMERAS OF 2016!

BEST SLOW MOTION CAMERAS

The end of 2016 is upon us and now it is time to look back across the year and see what delivered in affordable slow motion gear.  While many cameras had higher frame rates, only a few really shined and delivered on the promise of offering HD quality and higher than normal frames per second “fps” at an attractive price point.

Many promised lots of performance and didn’t deliver and some have yet to ship which means they will not be counted in the running. Only cameras that are shipping and fully available are being considered for this list. However we will mention upcoming promised cameras as a side note for future consideration.

BEST SLOW MOTION CAMERAS of 2016:

Without further ado here are what may be the best value slow motion cameras that are leading their respective categories for the year 2016:

Best Slow Motion Phones: iPhone 7, 7 Plus & Google Pixel, Pixel XL!

The best slow motion phones of 2016 are the iPhone 7, 7 Plus and the Google Pixel and or Pixel XL  which offer 120fps at 1080p and 240fps at 720p with pretty great quality considering they are portable handsets.

Congratulations to Google venturing into their own branded hardware this year without attaching a  3rd party manufacturer brand name in the case and to keep including higher frame rates at quality bit rates on their phones. The Apple iPhone continues to be the benchmark for slow motion quality recording on smartphones but with no real change or innovation in over 2 years.

The Google Pixel has some problems when it comes to waterproofing and full weather-sealing that the iPhone 7 does not suffer from.  So if you want the best waterproof experience the Apple is the way to go. If you plan however to keep your phone dry then the Pixel and or Pixel XL are on par as slow motion phones.

Mid Range Professional: Panasonic HC-X1!

The Panasonic HC-X1 $3,199.00 is kind of an odd product in the fact that the Panasonic DVX200 $3,849.00 it’s slightly higher quality in the spec department but identical when it comes to the Slow Motion quality.  For $600 less you get most of the DVX200 features but will have to do with a smaller 1″ sensor instead of the 4/3rds on the DVX200.

The Slow Mo Specs of 60fps at full 4k UHD and 120/100fps at 1080p full HD are in line with what we expect from a professional 4k camera today.   However the Panasonic HC-X1 is using a very good low light sensor and the smaller footprint let it be more stealthy than the larger cameras.   If you need an event camcorder with higher frame rates this year the HC-X1 and or the DVX200 should be at the top of your list.

Action Cameras: Sony FDR-X3000 & GoPro Hero 5 Black!

The action cameras that shined this year are plenty but there are no better two examples than the Sony FDR-X3000 and the GoPro Hero 5 Black when it comes to the best higher frame rate capable action cams that also do 4k 30fps. Both do 240fps at 720p and 120fps at full HD 1080p.

We are partial to the Sony FDR-X3000 due to the slightly less wide angle distortion, true SteadyShot™ in lens stabilization and what may be the best quality video per picel on action cameras. However the GoPro Hero 5 Black is no slouch with better looking 240fps 720p slow motion by a smidge and the compatibility with many Drones and Handheld Gimbal stabilizers that the Sony’s shape is simply not optimized for.  The Video quality is very close between the two and you really cannot go wrong with any of them.

If you have been in the GoPro ecosystem for a while the Hero 5 Black is the way to go if you want to replace a Hero 3+ or older camera but not a Hero 4 Black which is very comparable in features and quality.  If you are buying your first action camera the Sony FDR-X3000 deserves your full attention.

Professional but Affordable Slow Motion: edgertronic SC2 and SC2+!

For really serious slow motion needs with interchangeable lens support there was no higher spec camera that is really affordable; than the edgertronic SC2 and SC2+. With a top speed at HD 720p of 4,456fps it is a real monster when it comes to performance and image quality. For scientists, industrial uses and some high end visual FX houses needing some ultra slow motion power the edgertronic SC2 and SC2+ deserve your full attention before looking for other options.

With a price range of $9,990 USD 3,350fps 720p for the edgertronic SC2 to $12,990 USD  4,456fps 720p for the SC2+ or fastest model in the series in either color or monochrome; it may not seem cheap at first glance but these cameras are 1/5th to 1/10th the price of comparable options with very similar performance and dependability.  A rental for such a camera would cost you a quarter of the price of the camera every week or two so owning your own makes it sound financially.

The small footprint and easy portability in the field with wireless capability using an external micro router and the addition of an Apple or Android Tablet make it a breeze to use with live view.  See here for our full review of the edgertronic SC2+ to see what it’s capable of.

P&S / Prosumer Cameras: Sony RX10 III  & Sony RX100 V!

Sony has been very involved in advancing super slow motion on their cameras since the advent of the Sony FS700 a few years back. Last year Sony surprised us with the development of a 1″ sensor package with super fast memory cache that was able to achieve 1,000fps in reduced resolution and 240fps at near full HD 1080p with great quality for a point and shoot camera.

The problem last year was that the recording time in quality priority mode in the high speed mode was limited to 2 seconds which is not ideal. However this year the Sony RX100 V doubled the camera spec to 4 seconds in quality mode and nearly 7 seconds in time priority mode.  The cameras are nearly identical in looks but offer very different performance metrics.  Another cool feature is the ability for the RX100 V to shoot up to 24fps at full 20 megapixels in RAW for 150 shots or 6.24 seconds.  Essentially offering a 6k RAW image at 24p in the palm of your hand.  No audio will be recorded but for small vignette shots it is quite remarkable.

The Sony RX10 III is a better version of last year’s RX10 II offering a better lens with larger glass elements and a zoom equivalent of 25x vs 10x on the last model.  Other than that the camera is nearly identical in function.  The RX10 IV is expected to be launched next year to have the same spec with the extra slow motion recording time of the RX100 V. However the RX10 III is no slouch and if you can live with 2 seconds  recording in super slow motion quality priority it should be in your short list.

If we had our pick for the best bang for your buck in 2016 for a slow motion camera it has to be the Sony RX100 V with its great quality and affordable price under $960 USD. It earns our HSC Top Pick for 2016!

Limited Availability Cameras and or Shipping Next Year: The fps1000HD and Chronos 1.4!

2016 was also a year of crowdfunded cameras in the high speed sector taking shape. We cannot count these cameras in our top list due to limited availability or not shipping this year status but that may change next year.

On the one hand we have the second fps1000 iteration Kickstarter campaign with the fps1000HD capable of 1000fps at 720p HD resolution in RAW DNG Format with a 5″ touch screen, C Mount and many professional features for under $2500 USD and a 2 full minute recording time at 720p with 256GB of flash memory.

More Info and Ordering for the fps1000 Here:  http://theslowmotioncameracompany.com/

On the other we have the brain child of David Kronstein a Canadian electronics engineer the Chronos 1.4 which has surpassed all expectations with a Kickstarter campaign closing in $400k USD in funding.  The camera capable of 1500fps at HD 720p with a C Mount and 5″ touchscreen as well.

To visit and gather more information and possibly ordering a Chronos 1.4 Camera visit the Kickstarter Page: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1714585446/chronos-14-high-speed-camera/

Both of these cameras are engineered to be truly portable but are still not shipping in quantity or at all. Early next year these cameras are expected to be available to the mass public in their respective web stores.

In the mean time we encourage you to check their respective websites and do your research so you have an idea of their capabilities.  Until they are shipping in quantity we cannot fully recommend any of these options unless you are inclined to wait a few months for delivery and maybe more.  Still these cameras are fully developed hardware wise and should be pretty sure bets as long as you know the risks of investing in camera startup products.

End of Year Message:

When HSC started in early 2014 it was meant to fill a void in the camera news world when it came to slow motion cameras. Nearly 3 years in and approaching on 3.5 million visitors we are very excited about the future of the website.

We thank all of our readers and those who have supported us in one way or another with comments, information and by purchasing our recommended products to make it able to host and maintain this site. Our mission is strongly renewed to bring you coverage of the affordable high speed market in 2017.

We are humbled by your continued interest and it gives us encouragement to continue strongly with this blog next year.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! -HSC

Black Friday Slow Motion Camera Deals!

Black Friday Slow Motion Camera

It’s that time of year when we examine the best deals out there for super slow motion capable cameras. Some discounts are hard to pass while others are downright ridiculous compared to retail prices when the gear was launched. If you are thinking to buy a gift for someone or yourself that does high frame rates then we have a few picks that will make it easier.

There is a plethora of options to choose from but we will focus on the best category contenders that have received a type of deal that does justice to either Black Friday or Cyber Monday! We will outright reject anything that just barely does higher frame rates and focus on cameras that do them well and have in some cases room for going head to head with very expensive ones.

Category 1- Point & Shoot Camera:

There is no real contest here besides the excellent Sony RX series. These are capable of near 1080p 240fps resolution slow motion and won’t break the bank.  The RX100 V for example is our top contender for slow motion camera of the year.

BEST DEAL: Sony RX10 Mark III Adorama Special Offer: Free Sandisk 64GB Extreme SD Card and Free $100 Gift Certificate on the purchase. Free Expedited Shipping – all for: $1,598.00

The Sony RX10 III Can shoot 120fps, 240fps, 480fps and up to 1000fps at reduced resolution with near 1080p quality at 240fps.

DJI Phantom 4 Quadcopter $999 + Free Shipping from Amazon.com!

Note: Since the GoPro Karma is recalled for now; it was not included in this running – sadly since the Hero 5 is a great and capable camera.

Category 3- Smartphones:

It was hard to pick a smartphone deal since there are so many out there but we decided to go by Slow motion quality over price and it was easy this way.  We ended with two main rivals that are heavily discounted.

Deal 1- iPhone 6s by Apple 240fps 720p and 1080p 120fps capable.  From $399 free shipping.
Deal 2- Google Nexus 6P by Huawei – 240fps 720p and 1080p 120fps capable. From $399 USD

Category 4 – Action Cameras:

Action cameras keep getting more capable but in the case of the GoPro Hero 4 Black it is still up there and neck and neck with the new Hero 5 Black when it comes to image quality. It shares the same frame rates in 4k and slow motion with just minor improvements. But you can get it for $150 USD Cheaper than last year.

Hero 4 Black Deal: $347 with free shipping from Amazon.com!

Sony Action Camera FDRX3000 beats the GoPro with lens stabilization and offers the same exact video specs 120fps 1080p and 240fps 720p with somewhat less distortion and sharper overall look.  The Camera now starts at $348.00 USD Off from the $400 just a few months back.

Category 5 – Professional Cameras:

One of the best deals in slow motion capable cameras today comes in the shape of the Sony FS700 which is now just $3,912 USD with free shipping. The drop from $7,999 at launch is breath taking. The camera is capable of near 1080p resolution at 240fps in an APS-C Sensor and up to 1000fps at reduced resolutions.  A Sony RX10 or RX100 are better values today if you are looking for slow motion but you do not have the interchangeable lenses or larger sensor option to go with it.  We can’t wait for Sony to use the RX technology in a new pro camera that is affordable.

Deal- Sony FS700 4k and Super Slow Motion Camera with E Mount for $3,912.99 + Free Shipping

Another great deal in the pro arena is the edgertronic SC1 Camera which delivers up to 701fps at 720p resolution in a highly portable professional camera. While there is no holiday deal, it is still one of the only truly professional affordable slow motion cameras out there for 24/7 operation at $5,495 USD in Color or Monochrome!

Category 6 – Crowd Funded Cameras:

This space is reserved for Kickstarter and similar outlets of camera projects that offer slow motion options that might interest you if you so choose to play on that arena.

Disclaimer: The crowd funded cameras may or may not ship to you in time or at all depending on possible setbacks so this is reserved for the risk takers.  However if you want a great deal you must look at these options for sure and roll the dice. However both of these projects have been heavily funded and are progressing nicely with some final cameras already delivered in the case of the fps1000.

Deal 1: fps1000 HD Kickstarter project and Order Website here! 1000fps 720p for under $2,500 USD

Kickstarter project page for the fps1000 HD here!

Deal 2: Chronos 1.4 by David Kronstein: Up to 1500fps 720p from $2,499.00 USD

Final Word:

There you have it, a bunch of great deals on cameras that shoot super slow motion. There will always be better cameras and cheaper camera deals in the future; but the time you have available to use them might fly away when we confront our own mortality. So plan accordingly and if you really want to experiment with the art and science of slow motion this is a great place to start! DigitalRev Has Fun With Sony RX Slowmo!

DigitalRevSlowmoShoot

There is no question that DigitalRev TV is the Top Gear of camera reviews on the internet. We are big fans of the antics of Kai and Lok doing all sorts of cool shoots and taking the mundane out of camera testing by making it fun or even ridiculous.

This time around they have decided to try the Sony RX10 II and The Sony RX100 IV slow motion feature for a spin. The video is educational also going over the basics of slow motion shooting with these cameras and comparing them with smartphones capable of doing slow motion.  Our reader Rommel alerted us to this video.

Lok is usually behind the camera as the de facto shooter for the Kai DigitalRev review pieces but this time around he is the main talent for the piece.   They manage to get 25 slow motion ideas shot by the end of the video and the results speak for themselves. Some are very cool looking; while some would improve with better composition nd framing. That is the nature of shooting slow motion video, it takes a long time to get something remarkable with a lot of planning or just sheer luck. However this video below will probably have you look for the slow mo feature on your camera or phone to try stuff out.

How To: 25 Simple Epic Slow Motion Clips (RX100 IV & RX10 II):

Five Best Slowmo Cameras of 2015!

BestCameras2015pic

The end of 2015 is upon us and now it is time to look back and see what the year brought us in the shape of affordable slow motion gear.  While many cameras had higher frame rates, only a few really shined and delivered on the promise of offering HD quality and higher than normal frames per second in an attractive price point and one that you may already own if you have a recent mobile device.

Many promised and didn’t deliver and some have yet to ship which means they will not be counted in the running. Only cameras that are shipping and fully available are being considered for this list. Other cameras like the edgertronic offer better quality slow motion at higher frame rates for a  similar price but this list is only about cameras introduced in 2015.

Without further ado here are what we believe to be the five best value cameras of 2015:

#5 – Panasonic Camcorders:

These little camcorders have been the last remnants of what used to be a wide and varied category of portable camcorders. Panasonic refuses to let the product line die as there is still a lot of market left to explore that have not moved to ILC cameras or super portables. All three of these camcorders offer 120fps at 1080p and the WX970 and the VX870 offer 240fps interpolated frame rates that do pretty good even when they are not real frames.  Best of all these cameras have been lowering in price and now are destined for the bargain hunter bin.  The WX970  and the VX870 offer 4k recording to round up the spec sheet. Out of all three the vx870 is the best value for money!

#4 – Sony FDR-X1000V 4K Action Cam:

The GoPro Hero 4 Black used to own the space but in our tests the Sony Action Cam X1000V had the better image quality and stabilization.  For just under $400 USD it is the best value action ultra portable camcorder that offers 120fps at full HD and 240fps at 720p frame rates for 2015.  When GoPro or others respond it will be time to re-examine this claim. Specs below:

  • Professional 4K (3840 x 2160) video recording with up to 240p HD / 120p HD
  • SteadyShot(TM) image stabilization works from bikes to aerial shot and more
  • Splash proof body with universal tripod mount
  • Built-in stereo mic for quality sound with wind noise reduction

#3 – Apple iPhone 6s and Nexus 6P:

Tied in the 3rd spot are the iPhone 6s, 6s Plus and the Google Nexus 6P as all offer 240fps at 720p with great quality and constitute what could be the best slow motion capable phones that are available in quantity and are proven to deliver the goods when it comes to the video quality you expect when shooting slow motion.

Congratulations to Google and Huawei to getting in the ring to dethrone the iPhone as the only real slow motion quality option in the mobile phone space. The Nexus 6P has some issues with bending under minor stress however this does not detract from the fact that the slow motion is excellent for a phone and if you treat it with care it should last you easily until you replace it in a couple of years.

#2 – Sony PXW-FS5 XDCAM Super 35 Camera:

When the Sony FS7 was released in 2014 it sent ripples through the industry as it answered the call of many to get amazing 4k quality with a great low light sensor and in a more affordable package than other cameras like the Canon EOS Cinema line. That camera was a hit but the new Sony FS5 is like an explosion. It offers most of the features of it’s larger brother but with even better higher frame rates with some of the best slow motion quality for the money in the medium budget segment.

If you are a cost conscious production house, the Sony FS5 makes a lot of sense as it does so much so good. The higher frame rates up to 960fps are just icing on the cake. If you can live with 8 bit color then this is the camera for you. It does not win the #1 spot because of price considering slow motion frame rates but if it was for quality it would have easily taken the #1 spot of 2015 for new cameras.

#1 – Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 IV & DSC-RX10 II:

Earlier this year when the Sony RX100 IV and RX10 II were released it came out of left field. They sport a newly developed Sony sensor with built in buffer memory that is fast and has even some circuitry to improve or eliminate in some instances many rolling shutter artifacts common in CMOS sensors.  The Stacked image sensor allows for ultra fast frame rates with pretty excellent quality up to 240fps at near 1080p resolution for 2 seconds and continuous 120fps at 1080p. Both can jump to 480fps and 960fps in reduced resolutions very close to what the Sony FS5 can achieve for also 2 seconds in quality mode and 4 seconds in time priority mode.

You really can’t go wrong with any of these two cameras and they bring quality and features at a price that will not break the bank. They take the top spot in 2015 and are our cameras of the year!

Congratulations to the Sony Cybershot team for a groundbreaking product!

Honorable Mentions:

While they didn’t get directly on the list, the following cameras are extraordinary in their own right and all of them offer pretty robust slow motion performance above regular frame rates but under 240fps.

  1. Sony a7s Mark II – Excellent 120fps at 1080p with extreme low light performance.
  2. Kinefinity Kinemax 6k  144fps at 2k resolution.
  3. URSA Mini by Black Magic Design up to 160fps at 1080p.

For cameras not mentioned that are almost here like the fps1000, or phones with Mediatek Helios X10 like the Ono U1 they will participate in 2016 when they ship.

Thank you all for your support and we hope to continue to provide information, reviews and analysis to you for 2016 and beyond .   Running the site costs a lot of time and money and we want to get to a point where it is self sustainable.  It is still far from that. We expect 2016 to be another growth year and be able to break even in our costs. As we gain more popularity we also expect to reduce ads but that can’t happen unless we get to a point of growth that allows for it. When you decide to buy gear do so from our site links if you can and your store is linked as it helps us continue to  run the site at no extra cost to you.
