DJI Phantom 4 Sports 120fps Full HD!

Phantom4One

The recently announced DJI Phantom 4 Drone is finally pushing obstacle avoidance technology to the point where you are no longer worried about hitting trees, people or god forbid birds other flying craft.  There is technology here that just 5 years ago would have been extremely expensive, however don’t expect this self awareness of space to translate into a perfect set and forget technology for now.

There is a lot of improvement here and the mobile application lets you track subjects and paths with just touch and drag. There are things that drone makers like DJI are working behind the scenes to get obstacle avoidance and self awareness even further to a level where people and governments can relax about these craft being a danger to society. We are still not there but things will continue to improve along those lines. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

JVC GY-LS300 Offers Rebate and 120fps Upgrade!

gy-ls300-JVC

What came as sort of a surprise and some mitigated anger to current  recent owners of the camera, JVC announced that the JVC GY-LS300 4k, HD and SD capable camcorder will now be offered at $1,000 USD cheaper from a MSRP of $3,995 to $2,995. Furthermore it has a few new features added in a free firmware upgrade to current and new owners of the camera in April.

The update brings full HD 120fps capability to an already robust camera along with “JVC Log Gamma” recording mode.  The camera offers a Micro 4/3 mount for easy use of different lens mounts including Canon and Nikkor lenses which is a big strength of this setup.  Hundreds of adapted lenses can be used from almost any manufacturer.  The JVC Log mode is supposed to increase dynamic range by 800%. We find that claim a  little on the superlative side and probably will bring 2-3 real stops improvement in DR. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

TheVideoMode Has Leica SL and a7s II Previews!

The folks of TheVideoMode.com  have had some time with the new Leica SL Typ 601 and the Sony A7s Mark II.  Some videos showing the interface for accessing the slow motion interface have been posted on their site.  There is also a slow motion low light sample of the A7s Mark II at 120fps for you to watch.

Leica SL Typ 601 120fps 1080p Will Cost You!

LeicaSL34

Leica introduced the Leica SL Typ 601 mirrorless ILC “Interchangeable Lens Camera” With three lenses for the new system:  the Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm F2.8-4 ASPH, Apo-Vario Elmarit-SL 90-280mm F2.8-4 and Summilux-SL 50mm F1.4 ASPH.

The Leica SL Camera itself has a 24MP Full Frame sensor based on the Leica Q camera sensor with modifications. Some speculate that the sensor is a Panasonic made part.  The camera can take 11fps continuous shooting and 4k video at 24p  and UHD at 30p. But what cought our eye was that it offers true 1080p 120fps mode and a 720p 120fps mode.  Why include the latter is anybodys guess but if it is a sensor crop at 720p it allows for slow motion Telephoto.  The 1080p 120fps mode uses the entire sensor area and down-samples to create the frame rate.  We did notice some moderate aliasing in the samples that have been released but nothing too pronounced.  The slow motion quality is actually extremely good and it is quite possibly on par with the best 120fps compact cameras out there today. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

The Case For Monochrome High Speed!

CoverMonochromeArticle

For many of us it seems counter intuitive to own a camera that doesn’t shoot color images.  In this day and age of technological marvels, being constrained by black and white / monochrome output on recording is a strange proposition. For the world of high speed imaging however you have to re-examine the entire debate from a benefits point of view and why it could be ideal to have monochrome instead of RGB color as your high speed option.

Depending on the intended use Monochrome might give you more bang for your buck and save you a lot of money on lighting and power requirements to run those lights.  To understand the benefits we need to dig in on why Monochrome camera sensors excel in areas where color sensors suffer and why this will hardly change with current sensor technology in the near future. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Kipon AF Adapter for Canon EOS EF Ready!

KiponMFT_EFAdapter

A few weeks ago the Kipon full Auto focus, Iris and IS enabled EF to M43 adapter was announced. Many huge doubts lingered to it’s effectiveness in Auto Focus as any other AF adapter for the likes of Sony cameras for example take several seconds to lock onto a target.  The Kipon promises to be a seamless adapter for Canon EF lenses on Micro 4/3 system cameras like the Panasonic GH4.

Today it released a few videos showing the Auto Focus AF capability of the adapter in action and it is very impressive to say the least, it also works with EF-S lenses which is a plus. → Continue Reading Full Post ←
