Sony Xperia 1 III is Slow Motion Capable!

Sony has now released the third iteration of their Xperia 1 series which are the flagship phones from the company that really push the capabilities of the brand. Many point out that Sony smartphones are excellently made and perform admirably while also including the now coveted 3.5mm audio jack which has been removed at the behest of Apple iPhone influence in the vast majority of phones. We will say it once more, USB C audio adapters are terrible connections compared to 3.5mm jacks which offer the best possible audio transmission possibilities without compression and other trade-offs.

The new Sony Xperia 1 III continues the 120fps 4k HDR pedigree of the Xperia 1 II which is clearly a much-coveted feature for video enthusiasts. This time around the phone improves color, compression, and HDR fidelity to deliver an outstanding image when light allows it. The phone also has the typical 1080p 120fp and 240fps frame rate that have been showing up as commonplace features in flagship smartphones but absent is any higher frame rates that were included the Motion Eye TM technology used in previous Sony phones allowing 1000fps 1080p recording for a short time. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Sony Xperia XZ1 Rumors Say 960fps Feature!

Sony Xperia XZ1

The Sony Xperia XZ1 Rumors about a 5.2″ HDR screen phone in the XZ line include the Motion Eye feature of 960fps video capture.  The Xperia XZs and XZ Premium earlier this year showed off Sony’s new slow motion capabilities when it comes to mobile sensor packages. The quality on those phones aims for 720p at 960fps and while it has some artifacts it is still usable.

We expect the Motion Eye Feature of the XZ1 to be the same as in other XZ phones which lasts under one second of recording at 720p 960fps. The Phone leaks also suggests the same sensor block which at 19MP is identical to previous XZ releases with Motion Eye.  The Phone will also have 4k 30p and 60fps 1080p recording.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium Slow Motion Shooting!

Sony Xperia XZ Premium Slow Motion

We already stated that the Slow Motion performance of the Sony Xperia XZs & XZ premium should be identical given that they share the exact same camera module based on a stacked memory sensor design. However many readers have asked if there is a difference between both phones.  Considering the latest samples released we can state that when it comes to slow motion shooting the XZs & XZ premium are identical.

The camera has a slow motion mode that takes very short bursts about 0.2 sec each to generate slow motion video in a 720p H.264 video stream. It is limited and you need trial and error to succeed but in the end, you can get terrific looking high-speed video that simply is unmatched by any other smartphone to date.

While the phone is set to be shipping by the end of May; many reviewers have gotten their hands on the handset and have been creating pretty cool slow motion from the get go.  We share some of the footage and review finds below:

Which to buy?

It is already established that both the XZ Premium and XZs Xperia Sony phones offer the exact same slow motion and camera performance. The problem lies in what kind of overall phone experience you want. The XZ Premium has a nicer finish, better weather sealing for splashes and dust and the Snapdragon 835 chip which is faster.  However, the price tag for the XZs at $655 vs the XZ Premium for $800+ is a big differentiating factor. Plus the XZ Premium will ship in Europe first by June 1st and the rest of the world later on. If you only want to test the slow motion feature then the XZs is the way to go for pricing and availability.

The Quality is below 720p in the slow motion mode with aliasing and moire present on the image. While pretty cool looking and somewhat clean of compression artifacts; the phone does suffer from resolution loss. We believe the slow motion quality is really a good 480p but not true 720p as stated; even when that video is saved as an HD file. Still, it is unmatched by any other phone released to date.  We just hope Sony fixes the resolution issues and goes all out to 1080p in the next iteration of their smartphone stacked release.

Xperia XZs Ships & New SlowMo Samples!

Xperia XZs

The Xperia XZs which is the lower spec phone that supports Motion Eye 960fps by Sony is now shipping and available for ordering.  At $699 it is not a really cheap phone but it is nowhere near the $800+ of flagship phones from Apple and Samsung. It is still under-powered compared to the latest Galaxy S8 release but where it counts for us the Slow Motion feature it is on a class of it’s own.

The quality is pretty remarkable for a phone and while the duration of recording is under 1 second, it translates to 40 seconds playback in a 24p timeline. Resolution is stated at 720p and while the frame is really that size, there is some subdued aliasing and moire in extreme detail which means Sony is removing some line information to get 960fps.

The end quality is still probably the best slow motion feature of any smartphone to date.  This is a milestone in performance due to the clever Sony DRAM+Sensor implementation of the Motion Eye system. This is the same technology as our favorite camera last year the Sony RX100 V; but reduced to a much smaller sensor package for phones. We estimate the technology will continue to evolve and Sony as of now remains on the forefront of the feature. Their tech demo already shows 1080p at 1000fps which will probably surface on a high end phone when the technology is allowed to see the light of day.

Xperia  Xzs & XZ Premium New Slow Motion Samples:

It is of note that the slow motion quality on either the XZs and or XZ Premium will be identical as they share the same camera module, sensor and lens. If you just need the slow motion and do not care for extra speed, better build quality and water protection then the XZs is a cheaper alternative with all the slow motion prowess.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium Slow Motion Samples!

The Sony Xperia XZ Premium and XZs have been exploding in popularity since the announcement was made at MWC 2017. The capability of the stacked sensor to record slow motion video at 960fps in HD 720p has opened possibilities only dreamed of a short year a go in the phone video space. Even the Galaxy S8 seems to be in the running with 1000fps video touted as a spec in the rumors.

The stacked sensor technology is the same one used in the Sony RX series cameras but this time attached to a smaller cellphone oriented sensor block which makes it possible to be combined with a powerful SoC solution to offer these high frame rates. It is of note that the recording limit on these devices is 1 second at 960fps.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium Slow Motion Samples:

We now have a few new slow motion samples from the Xperia XZ Premium which shares the exact same camera as the XZs but has a faster processor inside with the Snapdragon 835, improved weather sealing and a better screen among other improvements. However the image quality should be the same on both phones regardless of the price difference.

There you have it, it seems the phone is capable of some very decent quality. The recording will be under 1 second, probably above 1/2 sec and under 1. The quality seems to be 720p for real with some aliasing, moire and compression artifacts.

The Sony Xperia XZs and XZ Premium seem to be the phones to beat for 2017 slow motion crown. If the Galaxy S8 does bring 1080p 1000fps as an option then Sony will have to up it’s game but we will have to wait a few days until March 29th for the announcement.  We will monitor the shipping status on all of these phones and let you know as they become available. The XZS phones should be able to ship by April 5th and the XZ Premium by mid May 2017. -HSC

Sony Xperia XZ Premium and XZs do 960fps!

The most advanced phone is the Sony Xperia XZ Premium which has a true 4k resolution 5.5″ screen with HDR like the one present in Sony Bravia TVs. It is also splash proof and rain proof which is good for taking it on the go without much care for weather conditions.

What about the Slow Motion feature?

At first glance the new Xperia phones demolish everything before them when it comes to super slow motion.  However the technology in these first phones only shoots 720p 960fps and not the 1000fps at 1080p resolution hinted at in the Sony technology demo for their stacked sensor. Seems the first iteration of this technology will be resolution limited.  It still produces some excellent imagery for a slim smartphone.

Sony has not released any details beyond the 960fps slow-mo mode. We still are not clear if the phones will do 120fps 1080p, 240fps 1080p or 480fps in between frame rates. The phones in theory should be capable enough to do this.

Furthermore the user interface for slow motion is kind of limited and awkward to use. The entire slow motion buffer is only about 1 second of real time.  32 seconds played back on a 30fps timeline or 40 seconds for 24p.  You have to be extremely precise as you only record when you tap the slow mo record button and for 1 second.  You will have to plan your shots accordingly.  There is no Pre Trigger Or Post Trigger as far as demos have shown!

If you were thinking about skipping a real dedicated slow motion camera or a Sony RX series for example, think again. The slow motion implementation on this phone while pretty impressive it is limited in quality, resolution and time scope for anything serious.

It will still do impressive footage and while you cannot edit it on the phone you can still do it on your computer later on.

Sony Xperia XZs and XZ Premium hands-on by GSMArena:

Sony Xperia XZ Premium & XZs hands on by Android Authority:

We also have to note that the quality of the Sony samples for the XZ Premium and XZs are mixed with better looking slow motion footage that offers more than 720p resolution. It is unclear if they are using another iteration of their smartphone sensor with 1080p capability. The cloth demos for example offer at least 1080p quality in slow motion and have a dynamic range look above whet the smartphone is capable at first glance. We will have to wait and see for more real world samples to see if these phones are producing this kind of material.

Pricing and availability:

The Sony Xperia XZs Smartphone will come out first on April 5th and will start at $700 USD price-tag.  The Sony Xperia XZ Premium flagship phone is set to launch at some point in “May-June”, price is still not yet known but should be closer to $899 as a premium handset. both phones will offer the exact same slow motion specs in lens and sensor so if you are only buying for this feature the Xperia XZs will be the one to get. However we are partial to the XZ Premium with all the extra features like Snapdragon 835 and gorgeous screen.

We will keep you informed on these phones as more information surfaces. -HSC
