The full specs are official now and the OnePlus 6 is now considered a flagship phone by any measure you can throw at it. It has massive memory, speed and a price that will not break the bank at just $529 USD for the smaller capacity 64GB version. It has dual cameras and 4K shooting at 60FPS, 1080p at full 240FPS, and our favorite spec 720p at 480FPS.
Gone is the 960fps spec of phones like the Samsung Galaxy S9 & Sony Xperia XZ2 but with the added benefit of shooting 1800 frames of it which translates to 60 seconds playback “1 Minute” at 30p on the OnePlus 6. So an entire usable minute of slow motion at 720p will be a welcomed addition to any slow motion fans and while quality will have to be seen and analyzed, it already makes for a better overall experience than the 0.2 seconds recording of the competition.→ Continue Reading Full Post ←
On Semiconductor has launched two new 4k ready CMOS global shutter sensors with new technology for reduced noise and improved image quality. The parts are geared to surveillance, automotive, consumer devices and industrial applications. Both sensors are able to do high frame rates at 4k at full resolution.
The XGS 8000 is an 8.8 Mp (4096 x 2160) 4k / UHD resolution Global Shutter CMOS image sensor in 1/1.1 inch optical format capable of 120fps at full 8.8MP resolution. This first one geared for smaller devices. The XGS 12000 is a 12.6 Mp (4096 x 3072) CMOS image sensor in 1″ inch format, supporting up to 90 fps readout at full 12.6MP resolution. The Z Cam E1 which delivered excellent quality 4k footage from a tiny package and was able to do 720p 240fps frame rates “at less than ideal quality”, however, a new Rumor from 4/3 Rumors here shows a Twitter message that hints at a new Z E2 m4/3 camera that is able to do 120fps at full 4k resolution. If this turns out to be true it could yield further performance improvements in 1080p and 720p along with higher quality that could be usable.
As far as linear specs go a 120p 4k pipeline could in theory yield 480fps 1080p and 960/1000fps 720p without going out of spec. As we have come to know over the years, however, it is usually wrong to extrapolate these specs to the maximum possible metric as the sensor or memory could be bottlenecks that limit the performance. The Galaxy S9 leaks are coming and we are glad to see super slow motion prominently displayed on the box spec list. However, there are no real specs when it comes to frame rates apart from a set of rumors we have received. The frame rate supposedly shipping with the S9 paired with the “Exynos 9 Series 9810” SoC will be capable of 120fps 4k and up to 960/1000fps 1080p video recording.
One problem, however, is that in the USA the phone will not ship with the Exynos 9 Series 9810 but the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 which may not support the slow motion frame rates. In other places in the world, however, the Exynos 9 Series 9810 will be on the phone. Vision Research the creator of the Phantom, has posted a new Christmas Ornament slow motion video that hints at a new camera release for January 2018. From the looks of it, it may be capable of 20,000fps at 1080p resolution. When you look at the footage sample the resolution does look very well but it may be 720p if you really nitpick the edges which look somewhat aliased when played back at 1080p. Whichever the case may be 20k fps at HD resolution brings in an amazing performance and probably a high price alongside it. Happy Holidays! -HSC
