Chronos 2.1 HD Shoots 1000fps 1080p For $5k!

Chronos 2.1 HD Slow Motion Camera

In what could be summed up as a big milestone day in affordable slow motion, Krontech.ca the company behind the excellent 720p 1500fps Chronos 1.4c slow motion camera has now announced ready for pre-order a new 1080p Full HD 1000fps slow motion camera that starts at a bargain basement price of $5,000 US Dollars.  Considering just a few years ago this performance in the Phantom camera space was a six-figure proposition, this is major progress towards a camera that we have been waiting for a long time.

Sure there have been other cameras that democratized the space in the past like the amazing edgertronic SC2X we tested which is a 15,990 USD piece of gear and is capable of 2000fps+ at full HD resolution on an APS-C sized sensor.  Still very cheap compared to other cameras but not exactly affordable for the common shooter. Now the Chronos 2.1 HD is here to change all that and offer in a fully contained package with a ready to shoot kit for a starting price a third of that. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Galaxy S10 Slow Motion Video Samples!

Galaxy S10 Slow Motion Video Samples

Now that the Galaxy S10 has been shipping to customers for a couple of weeks we can now see a plethora of video samples showing the 240fps 1080p, 960fps 720p and 4k 60p high frame rate modes. We can clearly see a better compression on the new S10 samples compared to the Galaxy S9 in all modes. There is still some aliasing and moire but it is very well controlled.

Noise doesn’t become a problem unless it is very dark which means the Samsung noise reduction is doing an incredible job.  It is maybe too clean as some detail seems to be flattened out to control for artifacts. All the Galaxy S10 variants shoot the same quality slow motion in the main camera module so if you want to only get the S10e for it’s lower price of $749 you get to keep the high-speed feature intact. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Galaxy S10 Slow Motion Recording Is Slightly Improved!

Galaxy S10 Slow Motion Recording

So it seems the rumors were true about the slow motion component being preserved on the Galaxy S10 phones from last year’s S9. Last year the stand out feature of the phone in video mode was the slow motion capability and it was one of the main selling points for the Galaxy S9.  We got no mention of the feature during the Samsung event today for the S10 but we can find it buried in the phone specs with some details.

It seems the feature is slightly improved in bit-rate quality, color, and dynamic range. However, the main improvement is the recording time which has gone up to 0.4sec from 0.2sec and up to 0.8sec in 480fps mode which is half the frame rate.  In essence, it seems the phone is now the flagship slow motion performer for Samsung. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Galaxy S10 Should Include 960fps Slow Motion!

Galaxy S10 Slow Motion

The next Galaxy Phone release by Samsung flagship line the Galaxy S10 is due for release this month. The rumor mill is suggesting big improvements in screen size coverage, processing, fingerprint reader below the screen and our main interest slow motion video capture. It seems the next phone will improve on the video quality of the slow motion and may even add better time recording at 960fps 720p but will not introduce higher resolutions.

The Galaxy S9 and Note 9 already handle slow motion very well but we wanted to see better time recording on the 960fps slow motion mode above the fractions of a second offered by last years release. The OnePlus 6, for example, offered 3.75 seconds recording at 480fps which made it our slow motion phone for the 2018 calendar year. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

i-SPEED 726 Becomes Fastest HD Slow Motion Camera Today!

i-SPEED 726

Not too long ago the Vision Research Phantom v2640 was amazing us with 4MP capture at 6,600fps with incredible quality. Now iX Cameras with offices in the UK, USA and Shanghai China is turning heads with an extreme spec sheet of 3 Megapixels 2048×1536 at 8,512fps and a Full HD 1080p frame rate of 12,742fps which is just 242fps higher than the Phantom v2640 at 12,500fps.

The relative camera memory speed and pixel capture rate is very similar between these two behemoths but you have to give the crown to the i-SPEED 726 for the 3 megapixel 8,512fps which brings in a whole new level of temporal detail at above Full HD resolution.  Of course, these cameras do not share their pricing unless you request a quote which you cannot share publicly. However, expect to pay high 5 figures for the best the technology has to offer. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 960fps Mode Uses Interpolation?

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 960fps

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 had a few leaks in the past weeks concerning the slow motion mode and the company even released a water balloon sample. We decided to wait for the real reviews and samples before making an opinion on this phone which is destined for the Chinese market first. The phone is supposed to shoot 960fps in 1080p mode which is exciting as an initial spec matching the Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ3 phones in resolution and frame rate but we really have no slow motion duration spec yet.

After looking at the samples we have seen a clear indication of software interpolation to fill in video frames between high frame rate recorded video which looks to be 240p at 1080p and then conformed in software to 960fps on the fly using the phone’s hardware. The results are very good and beat anything we have seen before on phone frame rate interpolation which is a good thing, however, it looks like the phone is faking its way into slow motion 960fps. → Continue Reading Full Post ←
