JVC GY-LS300 Offers Rebate and 120fps Upgrade!

gy-ls300-JVC

What came as sort of a surprise and some mitigated anger to current  recent owners of the camera, JVC announced that the JVC GY-LS300 4k, HD and SD capable camcorder will now be offered at $1,000 USD cheaper from a MSRP of $3,995 to $2,995. Furthermore it has a few new features added in a free firmware upgrade to current and new owners of the camera in April.

The update brings full HD 120fps capability to an already robust camera along with “JVC Log Gamma” recording mode.  The camera offers a Micro 4/3 mount for easy use of different lens mounts including Canon and Nikkor lenses which is a big strength of this setup.  Hundreds of adapted lenses can be used from almost any manufacturer.  The JVC Log mode is supposed to increase dynamic range by 800%. We find that claim a  little on the superlative side and probably will bring 2-3 real stops improvement in DR. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Nikon DL Has Powerful Slow Motion!

NikonDLfps

Nikon has delivered a shockwave for affordable slow motion with the three new Nikon DL Cameras announced yesterday.  At first glance it seems a refresh of previous cameras with a 1″ sensor module but actually these are a completely new breed.

For starters the cameras offered are basically the same bare bones electronics with the difference being in a specific focal length for the fixed lens assembly.  The cameras are presented in a DL18-50mm for the wide angle shooters, DL24-500mm for the sports and nature crowd who need the reach and DL24-85mm for portraits and general photography with a Super Macro mode. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Speedramp by Prolost Makes Video Ramping Easy!

speedrampplacard

Video ramping is not new, it is actually been here for quite a few years in cameras and widely accessible in modern video editors. The problem is that it is still a hard thing to do properly.  You either get choppy results, artifacts or pretty amazing ones by chance or by sheer trial and error and are not easily repeatable. This is where Speedramp by Prolost.com comes in!

After effects has had Time Remapping for a few years in the CS releases including Premiere Pro; but as with almost any built in feature in software it is hardly polished as well as it could be. Speedramp builds on top of the Adobe Time Remapping by incorporating a simple to use workflow that is capable of being tweaked and altered by simple parameters until you get the desired effect. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Canon 80D Improves but ignores 4k and slowmo!

EOS80D

The EOS 70D was a big upgrade from the 60D in that nearly everything was better from the AF for stills, performance and live view Autofocus.  The Canon 80D just released improves even more on the 70D than ever before by using a truly exceptional AF stills module with 45 all cross type points. This is 1D level performance in a 1k USD price range.

They include a sensor that has Dual Pixel CMOS AF same as the recently released EOS 1DX Mk II which is a 5x more expensive camera.  This is in our view the killer feature of the 1DX Mk II and of the 80D as it becomes a true usable video camera with reliable autofocus. Previously unimaginable in either handycams, other video cameras and DSLRs. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Xiaomi Mi5 and Other Phones Rumored at MWC!

MWC2016

MWC – Mobile World Congress in Barcelona which takes place next week from February 22 to 25th has been heating up the rumor mill when it comes to phone announcements. CES was kind of a weak show for mobile announcements but the MWC Barcelona event will correct all that with many new phones announced.

As we only cover gear that is capable of shooting high frame rates for slow motion video there are some rumored phones that just jump out.  It seems that 120fps at least at 720p is now commonplace enough not to warrant a lot of scrutiny but now the trend is 120fps 1080p and 240fps at 720p as a new standard for flagship phones started by the iPhone 6s and cemented by the Huawei Nexus 6p of 2015. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Varicam LT offers up to 240fps in HD!

VaricamLT

Panasonic has released the specs of a new smaller version of their Varicam professional video camera with an S35mm sensor. The Varicam LT is the low cost version of the Varicam 35 which has higher end specs at a significantly higher price.  The Varicam 35 has a 4k mode that allows up to 120fps at full 4k resolution while the Varicam LT has less power at a maximum of 4k 60fps.

The LT is mostly identical after that 4k downgrade in the rest of it’s capabilities with dual native ISO of 800 ISO and 5000 ISO for extremely clean image quality at those native ISOs.  The Sensor itself is built for those opportunities that need higher sensitivity but also allow to shoot at reduced sensitivity for bright conditions.  This is great news for the use of the high frame rate feature. The inclusion of EF mount and PL  signify the seriousness of the product for an installed base of videographers and film makers with a growing arsenal of Canon and PL glass instead of Panasonic only lenses. They also state that EF lens compatibility will need to be tested and they will not support it directly. → Continue Reading Full Post ←
