Smarter Every Day has posted a very nice example video of audio master Gordon McGladdery recording audio to be incorporated into slow motion footage. Since recording real slow motion sound that is usable at super high speeds is an impossibility due to the undiscernable pitch that results from it, you need to get creative with some reverb, echo, pitch, and chamber audio effects in order to get a compelling final product. GH5 Firmware 2.2 Update for VFR And More!
Panasonic has released an updated firmware that claims to fix some instability issues while recording video at higher frame rates using VFR. The Firmware Version 2.2 Available here aims to reduce or eliminate instances where the camera could stop recording video or in some instances refuse to record in VFR mode. Some users have reported rare incidents of corrupted files, recording stops and some camera lockups that could be related to the VFR function buffer and write to SD card procedure. It will be a matter of testing this new firmware to see if it resolves these issues.
In some instances, it was narrowed down to slow SD cards that could not keep up with the data rates necessary or cards that had internal fragmentation that could cause corruption on clips. Glad to see Panasonic addressing this issue. The camera also adds a new menu item for customizing the function button on the new Leica H-ES200 200mm 2.8 lens to different parameters. Firmware Link!
edgertronic Latest Firmware Boosts Overclocking!
edgertronic has been working hard on a new firmware update that boosts frame rates for the newer SC2, SC2+ and SC2X cameras which makes it possible to shoot at full resolution several hundreds of extra frames while maintaining near stock video quality. This first update iteration adds an overclocking setting menu to the SC2, SC2+ and SC2X cameras with 5% increments in four settings.
Now the SC2+, for example, can shoot above 5000fps at 720p full resolution from the maximum stock of 4456fps. Overclocking settings come in four settings and while your mileage may vary according to your camera, most settings should work as advertised. We tested the SC2X at all settings and find that Overclock A 5% and B 10% offer quality very close to the stock setting and allowing for over 2000fps.

Just a few weeks ago we were surprised by a camera release that not only met the demanding 1080p 1000fps spec but actually nearly doubled it at 1910fps. edgertronic SC2X Unveiled 1910fps at 1080p!
edgertronic has unleashed what could be the most important affordable slow motion camera release this decade. The new SC2X aims to finally jump the 1080p barrier of over 1000fps that has been the wall of performance for cameras under $50k USD. The camera goes overboard with 1910fps at 1920*1088 pixels which offers TV, film, and web video production a new realm of possibilities with native resolution frame rates.
The camera looks and works exactly the same as the previous SC2+ release but with a flange ring in yellow golden color. The camera will work with all existing edgertronic cases, accessories and support systems as it is a direct upgrade for the line and maintains dimensions. The camera continues the use of the Nikon F mount which allows for manual aperture and focus on the supported lenses which are plentiful.
GH5 Firmware 2.0 Has Huge Improvements!
The just announced Firmware for the Panasonic GH5 offers the promised improvements when the camera was launched like 400Mbps All-I compression for 4k 10 bit recording and or 200MBPS 1080p. Also promised was near 6k Anamorphic shooting and HDR Ready Log Recording Gamma. All of that is in the firmware but the surprise comes from all the extra improvements that made the way into the 2.0 firmware release.
The new unexpected features range from a full tethering option for Mac or PC with free downloadable software to improved autofocus recording which was one of the weakest features of the camera. As far as slow motion related improvements it seems the firmware is not making any headway there. The bitrate improvements do not mention the VFR mode.
