There is always an outlier when it comes to phone innovation and we have to give it to Oppo in 2021 as it seems to have created a phone that really delivers features that seemed impossible just months ago.  The Oppo Find X3 Pro can deliver the usual 4k 30p and 60p video and up to 720p 480fps slow motion along with the common standard of 240p at 1080p.  Where the phone jumps ahead of the pack is the inclusion of a real microscopy camera module that has a ring light to boot.

Phantom TMX 7510 does 76000 fps in HD!

The scientists at Vision Research are at it again at their favorite pastime of hyper slow motion gear creation.  The new TMX 7510 Phantom camera is the fastest ever in their arsenal with a mind-bending spec of 75 Gigapixels throughput which is capable of delivering 76,000fps  1 Megapixel resolution or slightly higher than HD at 1280 x 800px.

The camera features the first BSI or Back-side illuminated sensor ever used in a Phantom camera. This allows for much better low-light performance which is crucial for slow motion applications.  The camera tops out at a ridiculous 1.75 million fps frame rate at 1280 x 32px in standard width mode or 640 x 64px in Binned mode.  One second recorded at that speed creates a file that plays back for 972min or just over 16hrs in a 30fps timeline.  Yikes! → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Chronos 2.1 HD Slow Motion Camera use is exploding!

The Chronos 2.1 HD Slow Motion Camera which is the larger sensor and resolution version of the Chronos 1.4c is now being used in a lot of production situations. The material created with it gets better and better and while there is still a small backlog of camera orders due to COVID 19 disrupting part supply channels, most orders are now just a few weeks behind.

We have looked at a dozen videos that we would like to share with our readership showing the Chronos 2.1 HD in full force shooting in exquisite 1080p quality.  We are still waiting for a review unit which was delayed for a shortage of components to get to us but needless to say, the camera is gaining a very good reputation as the lowest price vs. quality option in the 1000fps 1080p camera world.

We have seen a plethora of footage shot with the Chronos 2.1 HD lately which shows how Krontech has been able to ship a boatload of cameras across the globe.  You will find professionals and hobbyists alike shooting incredible material with the camera which is probably the best looking 1080p slow motion footage under $10,000 we have ever seen.  This little camera is making inroads into the market that is probably causing headaches to the higher end high-speed camera manufacturers. We can’t wait for Krontech to use what they have learned here to go even higher and offer a possible 1080p 4000+fps camera or a 1000fps 4k camera in the future.  Congratulations to our Canadian friends!

OnePlus 8 Pro the best slow motion phone today?

There has been an absence of real world samples of the OnePlus 8 in slow motion due to mainly of the hardware not reaching testers fast enough and the COVID 19 pandemic slowing things even further.  However, we have found a video that shows the OnePlus 8 Pro being compared to the Samsung S20 Ultra and the iPhone 11 Pro in the 240fps slow motion mode.

It is clear that the OnePlus 8 has a more processed image with higher saturation and apparent detail retention. It is also notable that dynamic range seems to be a winner in the OnePlus as well. The quality offered by the new handsets from the Chinese company is really astounding considering more expensive phones simply cannot seem to fully compete here. While more samples are needed the footage below shows a good enough view of what you can expect.

It is critical to note that more samples are needed and that the OnePlus 8 offers a 480fps mode that is heavily pixelated at 720p and the S20 ultra offers one at 960fps 720p that is very soft but are not compared in this footage.  Once more samples of those modes are available we can revisit them.

On this excellent video comparison by Mobizz Phobia, In some instances the iPhone looks to have better detail and color but it is not clear cut. The Samsung in most of the tests at this 240fps 1080p frame rate is clearly the loser with the worst dynamic range and more heavily affected by the compression.

One Plus 8 Pro looks to be the winner at 240p 1080p from these three phones if you only look at this video and it is a tall order since the iPhone 11 has been the best 1080p 240fps phone since last year on our list.   We stress that more samples and direct comparisons must be made to warrant a final verdict.  OnePlus looks to have an excellent phone here but we are not happy about the lower quality 480p so if you want it only for the 240fps then you simply cannot go wrong here.

There are more cameras coming this year and Sony is going to announce on the 26th of May what may be a new RX camera which will make things interesting.  We will definitely update you on that front.  Stay safe out there and thanks for reading! -HSC

The Chinese company from Shenzhen OnePlus has always been regarded as a pusher and advancer of cutting edge technology at a price that is more affordable than most premium brands. The good news has always been that the lower price has not really made it a premium-less experience, actually, many of their phones are so advanced and feature-rich than many flagships from Samsung and Apple have trouble catching up in features like the 120Hz display refresh of the 7T last year.

Since the OnePlus 6 and 6T slow motion in 2018 made inroads by allowing 480fps 720p recording for an unheard of in the phone space “3.75 sec” recording time it has been one of the best slow motion phones to own.  They repeated that feat with the OnePlus 7 and 7T in 2019. Now in 2020 after many pushed dates for announcement due to the pandemic situation they have now unveiled the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro flagship phones.  They are premium and advanced that compete head to head with the best out there. They also include 480fps and from the looks of the sample, it seems to be increased in quality with much less pixelation.

Oneplus 8 Pro Slow Motion Video Test by Camera Therapy:

So according to the sample above which was the only one we could find “If it is real”, it looks like the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro have increased the slow motion quality resolution with much less jagged edges and line skipping. Now looks as good or better than some competitors like Huawei or Samsung.

However, you can see that the slow motion lasts only about 6 or 7 seconds in playback at 30p.  That means the camera can only record 720p 480fps for 0.43-0.47 seconds which may really be 0.4 seconds in rounded numbers which is 6.4 seconds playback of 192 frames captured.  That breaks with the 3.75-second capture which was a full minute “60sec 1800frames” playback at 30p and made previous OnePlus phones ideal for capturing a lot of slow motion duration.

So you get an increase in quality but now slow motion is on par with Samsung in recording time which is a huge trade-off.  Not only that, Huawei offers 1920fps at 720p for 1/2 a second and 960fps for 1 second recording which beats the OnePlus offering without breaking a sweat.

Chronos Kickstarter Camera One Year Later!

David Kronstein has published a walkthrough video of the Krontech warehouse, assembly installations, and offices located near Vancouver Canada, in what could be described as a rapid expansion of a startup that just a year ago was just coalescing.  With now 337 Chronos 1.4c cameras shipped to Kickstarter backers and also direct purchase buyers; this is a significant number of units for any high-speed camera and we can probably expect that number to increase!

David also goes shares his thanks to the people who helped make the camera project possible and where the company can grow from here. We expect great things from Krontech not that they have shown the ability to mass produce gear that works and as it continues to improve with software releases. We are excited about their future and congratulate them on their success thus far.

Chronos Kickstarter update – One year later Video:

We are eager to see what David and his team of software engineer coders and electrical engineers can cook up now that their first project is maturing.  We would love to see a 1080p camera with a larger sensor and possibly a 4k capable high-speed unit with windowing in the 1080p and 720p modes.  All of this with the touchscreen ability of the Chronos 1.4c which makes it a breeze to run and gun with the camera.

Chronos Kickstarter Camera announces- Open Source Code on Chronos 1.4c:

“At long last, the Chronos Camera application source is now available at the following git repository:

Currently, we only support Ubuntu 16.04 LTS as a build environment. 17.04 is known to NOT work due to different compiler versions included. You’re welcome to try other environments, please let us know what works and what doesn’t.

Follow the instructions in the repository readme to set up your build environment.

We suggest not doing any significant changes or customization right now. We are in the process of breaking out the low-level camera control into a daemon controlled over D-Bus. This will allow the cam app to talk to the camera seamlessly, whether local or operating remotely over a network connection. Ideally, the exact same application will be able to be compiled to run on the camera or on a PC.

Once you have the application compiling, you can connect to your camera over SSH. Plug the mini-USB port into your computer, and it will enumerate as a USB to Ethernet bridge (serial numbers 00050 and above, earlier cameras need an update, this should be available in the next day or two). You can then log into the camera using root/<no password>

It is encouraging to see that the source code for the Chronos 1.4c is already up, ready to be explored and played with by enthusiasts.  We expect many new features and improvements added by the community over time with the possibility as well of improved UI and automation.  The Chronos 1.4c code is still maturing with it still in the testing phase to support the majority of the ports on the camera side. The LAN support is taking longer than expected because it requires a host interface to be supported with it as well for it to be useful for the common user.

Releasing the code is a big first step and we can’t wait to see what talented coders are able to do with it.

We are also working on an initial look at the Chronos 1.4c which will have answers to several questions we have been asked. We will look into the quality and shooting experience as well as the continued feature evolution. We received a new camera last week that will allow us to review it without setbacks which caused a delay with an early unit we received. -HSC
