Nikon DL is Killed Off, Now What?

Nikon DL is Killed Off

The Nikon DL was really the only strong contender in the pro-sumer compact camera line from Nikon to offer fast frame rates if it had shipped.  The only other remotely considerable high speed option by the company is the Nikon 1 series in their V and J options which haven’t been updated in a while.

The cancellation of the Nikon DL series was due mainly to technical issues with the image processor which made the company miss the June 2016 target ship date & second, a  restructuring effort after the company reported a net loss of ¥831 Million Yen or 7.3 Million US Dollars .  This is no small predicament as the company had reported in the same time frame last year a net profit of  ¥18.71 billion Yen or $165 Million USD.   → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Frog Tongue Science in Slow Motion!

Frog Tongue Science

A new study released by Georgia Tech led by Alexis Noel, Mechanical Engineering Ph.D. student at that institution has revealed the hidden nature and mechanics of how frogs use their squishy and sticky tongues to eat their prey. With acceleration forces  reaching 12 Gs these prey experiment over 4x that of astronauts in a rocket leaving the atmosphere at 3 Gs.

With the use of high speed video cameras  at over 1,000fps the study was able to reveal the complex motion, eye retraction and viscous properties of the frog’s elastic tongue while catching prey.  The frog uses a mucus like substance on the tongue to generate the stickiness necessary to envelop the insect prey without ejecting them off from the brutal speed and force generated. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Sony a99 II Slow Motion Samples!

Sony a99 II Slow Motion

The Sony a99 II with SLT “fixed translucent mirror design” has been awaited by the A Mount users who only have this camera to upgrade. It is by no means a slouch with it’s impressive specs like 42MP BSI Sensor and 12fps full AF picture shooting.  It also has 4k video recording at 24, 25 and 30p and a 120fps slow motion mode that works at 1080p full HD.

The slow motion quality has been mostly an obscure feature since no samples have been available until recently.  The original a99 had 60fps full HD on a 24MP sensor but the a99 II Doubles every spec and performance is not affected. It is really a monster of a camera for still shooters that can go head to head with the Nikon D5 and or Canon 1DX Mark II without skipping a beat. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Galaxy S8 Hints Better High Frame Rates!

Galaxy S8

The Samsung Note 7 was an unmitigated disaster for Samsung last year and continues to have a lasting effect on many consumers when deciding for a phone.  However Samsung according to recent disclosures on the causes of the battery fires on the Note 7 has now learned a lot from these mistakes and has pushed forward with innovative handsets scheduled for this year.

Chief among these new handsets is the Galaxy S8 which should provide a much expected upgrades and new features to the most sold Android phone worldwide.  The spec that interests ups more that anything is the capability of shooting ever faster frame rates at higher resolutions. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Slow Motion Videos Of The Week Jan 20th 2017!

Slow Motion Videos Of The Week

After the few camera announcements at CES that have a slow motion component there is little on the hardware side until CP+ Expo in Japan on Thursday, February 23 to Sunday, February 26, 2017.   Fuji Just announced a few cameras but the maximum frame rate on those is 60fps 1080p so we really have no interest in covering them at HSC. Our coverage starts at 720p 120fps and up.

However there is a lot of new slow motion footage on the web lately and we really have to marvel at the ingenuity, skill and risk taking to get it done.  We have a few footage samples from this week that we believe you should check out. Remember to visit and subscribe if you like the footage so the creators can keep pushing the envelope. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Insta360 Pro VR Camera 100fps at 4k!

Insta360 Pro VR Camera

Like coming out of a science fiction movie like Oblivion; the Insta360 Pro VR Camera with it’s six independent cameras and futuristic spherical design creates an immediate reaction to anyone that sees it. This is a real product not a concept and can record 8k at 30fps with post processing stitching required but full 4k 3D 360º degree footage at 30fps or 25fps with real time hardware stitching ready to post the end footage on the web.

The slow motion component comes at 4k where the camera can shoot 4k at up to 100fps for a slow motion result or super life like motion.  The Slow Motion mode lacks real time stitching but you can use post production to merge the final footage on your PC or Mac. → Continue Reading Full Post ←
