Tony Nurthrup has created a video eulogy of the consumer cameras along with a long explanation of why the camera as we know it will cease to exist. It is not only about the form factor change and plethora of options but the ability of camera companies to make money from their camera lines.

There has been a continued drop in consumer cameras of all kinds including SLR or ILC systems sales since their peak in 2011. It seems DJI is doing the impossible these days to make the competition look bad. They are executing on all cylinders by releasing industry leading products every couple of months now. The latest DJI Phantom 4 Pro and DJI Inspire 2 are so advanced compared to the competition that it really starts to become a monopolistic playing field.

The DJI Mavic Pro is already the most impressive drone when it comes to portability and now the new drones fill the gaps in image quality and performance where the Mavic Pro simply can’t compete. GoPro has already recalled the GoPro Karma Drone due to loosing power while hovering without warning posing a risk down below. Sony RX100 V Manual Shows Higher HFR Resolution!

It seems the Sony RX100 V is not only improved in recording time but also on resolution.  Our reader “slowmosage” sent us his new findings on the official manual and in fact Sony states much higher resolution read out for the HFR mode at 480fps, 500fps, 960fps and 1000fps than the RX100 IV had.

The increases are not trivial and shows that the actual readout in the horizontal at 500fps and 480fps is the same number of pixels read out at the near full HD 240fps and 500fps 1824*1026. This is a big improvement compared to the previous HFR modes and confirms that the resolution seen in the sample footage not only looks better but it is based on more pixels read out. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Chronos 1.4c High Speed Camera Tested!

The YouTube channel TAOFLEDERMAUS has received a Beta version of the Chronos 1.4c  High speed camera and has done a walk-through of the main interface, boot up time and clip trimming. While the camera is still in pre launch software it is clear the ability to shoot and save clips is rock solid.  For such an early version before production it already has most of what you would expect.

The interface has a Linux based OS with a simplified interface layer to control the camera. It has a handy preset resolution menu as well as live clop marks showing you the video capture area as you make adjustments. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

Sony a6500 Keeps 120fps On Refined Update!

On a clearly unexpected update of the a6xxx line of cameras Sony unveiled the α6500 E Mount camera much to the anger of people who just 6 months ago were buying the a6300 which became a darling for video shooters and APS-C photo shooters aswell. That camera brought oversampling of 6k to derive a 4k output which up to now created the sharpest and most detailed 4k image in consumer cameras.

However things were not all rosy with the a6300, many users cringed at the excessive rolling shutter skew when shooting 4k and the lack of dependable continuous tracking. Nikon KeyMission 170 4K Does 240fps!

One of the Photokina announcements that peaked our interest was the Nikon KeyMission 170 Action Camera which aims to disrupt the already crowded space of all weather sports segment.  We have a plethora of options from the leader GoPro and close competitors like Sony, Xiaomi, Olympus, Garmin and even Panasonic.  So another entry by Nikon seems to go by unnoticed however this hardware looks to be very capable and can go head to head with the best.

The slow motion capabilities are the standard for high end action cameras here with 120fps at 1080p and 240fps at 720p.  While these are becoming standard frame rates for the most part; there is a clear distinction on quality between cameras with Sony Action Cam being clearly superior in compression with XAVC S to GoPro for example.  ProTune on the Hero 4 and 5 does make a difference but Sony has the edge with an overall better codec that is low artifact. → Continue Reading Full Post ←
