GoPro Hero 7 Black Has Killer Stabilization but Same fps!

GoPro Hero 7 Black

GoPro has released 3 new cameras including the Hero 7 Black which is now the flagship product for the company.  The key feature is HyperSmooth which is a predictive stabilization technology based on scene analysis and sensor telemetry to accurately anticipate motion and correct the image to generate a gimbal-like smooth appearance to the video.  When you see the footage it is clear it is a huge improvement compared to even the Hero 6 Black which had a pretty good stabilizer.

The Stabilization, however, is limited to  4k 30/60p and other resolutions below 120p but anything above 120fps will use the previous stabilization feature which is not predictive and have no stabilization support at all at 1080p 240fps which is the highest slow motion mode.  No 480fps or other higher fps settings are available as the camera uses both the same Hero 6 Black sensor and the same GP1 system chip for this new camera. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

GoPro Hero 6 Black Slow Motion Samples!

GoPro Hero 6 Black Slow Motion Samples

With a few weeks of use around the world, the GoPro Hero 6 Black is becoming one of the favorite slow motion affordable cameras for all sorts of activities.  While the quality is not the best out there compared to cameras like the Sony RX series, it is competitive within its price bracket.   Aliasing and moire at 240fps are apparent but mostly non-intrusive for action shots. If you need it as a broadcast quality recorder then the slow-motion mode is not at the required level.

The camera does not have a 480fps mode or higher which could have been a fantastic surprise for high-speed fans. After all, GoPro had been the go-to camera for higher frame rates in the affordable category for nearly a decade.  The Hero 6 Black is still an excellent option with the highly improved sensor, processing, codec, and frame rate varieties that should be able to produce anywhere from broadcast quality 4k 60p to pretty good 120 2.7k and 240fps web ready 1080p. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

GoPro Hero 6 Black & Sony AX-700 HFR Details!

GoPro Hero 6 Black

The GoPro Hero 6 Black was announced yesterday and is identical to the leaks that appeared last week from packaging. This is a good thing but we were expecting the 720p mode to allow for 480fps and VGA to allow 960fps as it is customary for GoPro to include higher frame rates the lower the resolution windowed on the sensor drops.

The camera however now takes the crown once again for performance in higher frame rates and includes the 4k 60fps spec which we saw debut earlier on the Yi 4k+ action camera. Also, it brings in an unexpected 2.7k 120fps spec that takes it one notch higher than any other portable cam out there.  1080p 240fps was expected and brings it in line with Phones like the iPhone 8 and X. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

GoPro Hero 6 What will it Take?

GoPro Hero 6

It is no secret that GoPro had a pretty bad 2016 in terms of sales performance and the Karma Gate battery off incident. The company is loosing money but still shows signs of life. In the 4th quarter of 2016 GoPro was profitable on a non-GAAP basis with income of $42 million.  With the stock closing price today of $8.90, a far cry from the nearly $90 it was worth in October 2014, there needs to be a change of epic proportions if the company is expected to remain viable.

There are threats from new technologies like AR, VR and Snapchat Glasses among others that threaten to impede the company going forward. How can a camera company evolve overnight to survive in such a market.  We believe the answer is by innovating it’s way out of the whirlpool that it finds itself in. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

DJI Phantom 4 Pro Delivers 4k 60fps!

DJI Phantom 4 Pro

It seems DJI is doing the impossible these days to make the competition look bad. They are executing on all cylinders by releasing industry leading products every couple of months now. The latest DJI Phantom 4 Pro and DJI Inspire 2 are so advanced compared to the competition that it really starts to become a monopolistic playing field.

The DJI Mavic Pro is already the most impressive drone when it comes to portability and now the new drones fill the gaps in image quality and performance where the Mavic Pro simply can’t compete. GoPro has already recalled the GoPro Karma Drone due to loosing power while hovering without warning posing a risk down below. If these DJI drones are solid, then other makers have to step up their game fast. → Continue Reading Full Post ←

DJI Mavic Pro vs GoPro Karma Slowmo!

DJI Mavic Pro vs GoPro Karma

There has been extreme excitement over the last month for both the GoPro Karma Drone and the DJI Mavic Pro being the first truly portable and collapsible drones that offer professional features and a quality camera. However when we focus on the video quality it is clear that by several measures the Mavic Pro seems to be a step down compared to the DJI Phantom 4 and here lies the main issue between these two competing platforms.

GoPro has not been a quality champ ever since the DJI Phantom 3 came out. The Hero Camera with much more wide angle distortion and less sharpness was a letdown by being pretty much the same since the last refresh of the GoPro Hero 3+ several years ago. The GoPro way has been footprint reduction and feature addition instead of image quality hikes. → Continue Reading Full Post ←
